Shedding Coat?

Question for all you Sheep dog owners...Max is losing hair like crazy. When I brush him I have a wad of hair large enough to stuff a small pillow. I don't remember this happening last winter, but is he just changing coats? He is 15 months old now. I have so much hair around the house and I just hope he does'nt have any other health problem. Any info would be great!

Me again, maybe if I supply more info, some of you may have some advice or suggestions. Max never was much of a shedder, like most sheep dogs, but now when we sit on the couch, I walk away with hair all over me, I mean I am covered, and some times its in small clumps. When I pet him I get a hand full of hair too. He has lost alot of hair on his chest area too. When I brush him for approx 10 minutes I have a hair ball the about the size of a stuffed animal. My questions are: is this normal for the season, etc? Or could he have another problem. His skin is pinkish color, which I believe is the color it should be. We were just at the vet last week for all his booster shots and tests, and everything came back normal. Should i be worried?
You've got a puppy changing coats. Brush, brush, brush, this too will pass. Don't be upset, use this time to develop a special brushing bond between you and Max. As for the hair balls...you could always take up spinning
Thanks for the reply, he must be blowing his second coat then, to get to his adult. I wish the brushing was a bonding thing for us, but Maxwell Hates to be brushed, its more of a wrestling match, and he thinks I'm playing a game. Its quite funny.
Shelly,

I am sorry that I haven't responded to this post earlier, I have had lots of internet problems. Today they shall be fixed....I hope! 8O
I am glad you got an answer, and it was the same one I would of given you. Jack has been going through the same thing. He is blowing his puppy coat for the 2nd time. And believe me the second time was so much worse than the first time.
Brush everyday, if we miss a day, we will find mats. They aren't bad, but it just seems like they are more stubborn than before. He also went through about a month of looking really shabby. It has gotten better now, and he is fluffier and has beautiful color in his coat. I am guessing he is going to keep his black hair darker than most sheepies that I have seen. He has gotten lighter, but not much. His neck and shoulder blades are proving to be the most difficult for me.
Just keep brushing and you will get through this stubborn coat change.
Hold on, the black will change. My girl is a beautiful silver blue underneath but the tips are black. Unless she is brushed and sprayed keeping the hair UP, she's a darker sheepie. Since I'm not about to brush, back comb and spray............she's a darker sheepie
Wow, Hair, hair, everywhere! I don't remember so much hair when he blew his first coat! After one day I see clumps everywhere again, it seems to come off him in large clumbs too. Some areas are even getting bare, is this normal? His hair is getting coarser, etc, but I don't remember it being this much hair loss. Any advice would help. He is getting groomed tomarrow and cut, I'm just afraid you will see the balding spots :o
uhmmmmmmmmm.....mickey is 7months old and he doesnt shed at all.even when i brush him,i get barely no hair.now my collie sheds so i know ALL about shedding.maybe its the food i fed him?or maybe im just lucky?hehe!!
He just hasn't started to change coat yet... some dogs start at 4 or 5 months and some not till almost 2 years old.
Hi Shelly,

Max sounds just like Jack so don't worry...here is a post I did a month or so ago.

Jack is still losing in clumps, where he didn'tmuch before. Certain areas of his coat have thinned out more than others and it really changing colors. I really believe that we are just the lucky ones  , that get to go through this fun time twice. LOL
This second time was a lot worse than the first time. It seems to be lasting a bit longer as well. That would be a great idea to clip him down, but I really want to show him and Annabelle both, so we shall see.
Good luck and give Max a big hug for us.

Hi Shelly, It looks like all there hair is coming out I remember this with Oreo his birthday is in Dec so we had the hair problem in the fall. He had an exp laporatoy at 9mons so he had matts and knots from licking the area which was ok by the vet. The groomer lifted his hair up and trimmed the mess and put his down which covered it and he looked great. Lots of brushing is necessary. I would not worry about bald spots. I hope this helps ease your worries.
I just picked up Max from the Groomer and she explained to me that she did not cut him because he had so many bald spots and that she had not seen a dog lose so much hair. She said he was even losing the courser hair. My question to you all, should I take him to the vet? She said his skin was very pink too. I hate to pay the for a visit if this is normal, but also don't want to not take him if it is something worse. Let me know what you guys think, I can call in the am to take him on Saturday if I need to. Thanks for all the replies too!
Jack did not experience any balding or balding spots. I don't know whether that is normal or not. I would call your vet, just to get their opinion. Hopefully, there will be some more replies to help you make the best decision. Please let us know, if you find out anything else.
Good luck to you and Max.

With out really knowing anything, i've decided to take him to to vet. I have an appt in an hour and will let you know what they say. Thanks for the great information that I did get!
Shelly, I hope everything turns out well with Max, I look forward to hearing some GOOD news.

Well, the vet seems to think he is having an allergic reaction to something. I am leaning towards my carpets, I steam cleaned them a few weeks ago, and they are throughout the house. he also wants me to change his food to a rice and lamb one. So I will start that gradual process. Which I hate to do because Max likes the Iams. He gave max some antibiotics to help with the itching and 2 shots. he said it should clear up in a few days. I hope the carpets lose some of the cleanser to help too. Its not like I can wash them again :o to get rid of it. Maybe now my visitors can leave with out looking like a sheep dog with all the hair they have on them :D
Shelly,

I am so glad that you were able to figure out Max's problem, poor guy. My pups were also on Iams and we switched to Nutro Lamb and rice. They seem to be doing well on it, as they had a sensitive tummy on the Iam's.
Give poor itchy Max a hug for me.
We got our own carpet cleaner and will sometimes just use more natural products to get out stain or odors. It works well, and we had our carpet put in a little over a year ago, and it seems to be holding up well to my twice a day vaccuming and frequent carpet cleanings.
I try to make sure that our house full of furbabies, doesn't SMELL like a house full of furbabies. LOL

Wow that's a lot of vacuuming, I don't know how you manage to keep up! I have mostly hardwood and linoleum, only carpeting is upstairs in the kids bedrooms, and the dogs aren't allowed up there anyway.
We have carpet and tile throughout our house, and with the dogs and the cats, I have to vaccum that much or I would lose my mind..LOL I have slacked off since the time change though. I just can't get back into our schedule. I did clean all the floors today though,so I feel better. LOL
The kittens think spreading litter everywhere is the funnest thing to do, but sometimes shredding toilet paper in lots of teeny tiny little pieces is funner. So I could probably vaccum more, but twice is my limit. 8O

I used to have all carpets in my house. Our rent house is still almost fully carpeted, except for the kitchen. I have a rug cleaner and clean the rugs at least annually.
One of my renters decided she needed to clean her rugs monthly. When I went for the annual cleaning, the rug just started foaming. She had been using a rug cleaner every month! I had to "rinse" the rugs 4 times each to get the detergent out. She was so surprised that detergent actually attracts dirt and ruins rug fibers. I made her pay for the extra cleaning and promise to only use water for her montly cleanings. When she moved out a year later the carpets were still looking new.
Yes, you can rinse the detergent out. You run the carpet cleaner over it with just hot water until all foam disappears. Do not soak the carpets. Light sprays and vacuum it up immediately. If they seem wet, stop applying water and suction up any excess. Let it dry thoroughly before tring to "rinse" them again. Too much water at once can ruin a rug and cause mildewing.
Nutro Lamb and Rice is what our dogs get too. They love it and their coats look great. I am not so sure if it is great for their teeth though. Seems to stick to them more than other foods.
Abbi seems to have a allergy to Proin also (her saliva turns her hair brown when she licks it). So I cut back on her dosaging to one every other day. Seems to work for her. Her hair is much more whiter, except when she lays in the dirt.
Allergies are tricky. Good luck.

My female OES has the same problem with the skin being pink and the hair fell out on the chest and the hair coming out in clumps. The vet said she has allergies to pollen most likely or fleas though the fleas are not bad in January. The vet put her on Keflex antibiotics for staff infection, antihistamine for the itching, steriod to stop the itching and a medicated shampoo to get her better. Hope you get your OES better. :D Karen
