Chicago lovers, Sheepie lovers and onion loafs lovers

Hi all,

Mary (SheepALot) mentioned to me that she is a onion loaf lover too!

So, maybe we could put a lunch together for some Sunday in January (too much going on now), at Hackneys in Lake Zurich.

Anyone interested? I know I am!

I'm interested in someone sending me some onion loaf to taste. :D
I wonder if they can ship them. So many of the Chicago restaurants are shipping their foods. Hmmm...I'll find out!
I'm in. January sounds fine to me.

Oh, that onion loaf, I can taste it now, mmmmmmm soooo gooood!

Mary
Melissa and I would be interested. :D
I missed the previous explanation of the onion loaf  - could someone tell me what it is, exactly??
It's kind of like thin crispy onion rings in loaf form...mmmmm. :D
Thin onions rings pressed (smashed) into loaf form, held together with grease. One of the great culinary delights.

Of course I'm in!
I'll see if Jan (from Racine) can join us, too. Think we can get Nita in on this?

Ok....SAVE THE DATE! Sunday, January 13th, 2008!

me too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Deborah, great minds think alike. I was going to say "let's open this up to all interested parties, no matter where they live."

(My mom's birthday is the 11th so I hope I can make this).
Is the onion loaf anything like a blooming onion from Outback? :?

I have never had an Outback bloomin' onion, but I think that is different.

Think more like the really thin onion ring/straw things some restaurants put on top of salad or steaks or something. Only packed together in a delicious loaf form.
 They will ship Hackney burgers, but not the onion loaf.

Sorry.
sheesh, its not really nice of you guys to talk about really cool and yummy food...at least to the rest of us that have NO way of getting some.....

i think you should overnight all of us that would like to try it...its the least you can do
No.

Y'all should fly in to Chicago and have lunch with us in January!!!!

(Chicago is quite lovely and warm in January...with cool gentle breezes of the scenic Lake Michigan.)
warm like the tundra huh???

i think not....i still like the idea of overnighting me some yummers...oh and while your at it, can you throw in a latke or two???????? 8)
Thanks for checking for us anyway, Deb! :D I guess we'll just have to dream of onion loaf from afar.

Does this remind anyone of an episode of MASH where Hawkeye orders ribs from some place in Chicago & has them shipped to Korea? 8)
So are they breaded and fried, or is it actually a bread (like in LOAF of bread?)
when you guys go, will you please take a picture of this stuff??!!

i found this..is this what it looks like?

And now I have to go to work.....darn. Hope I have time to check back. :D

YUM!!!!! Yep that's them!!! Very thin slices of onion rings, breaded then formed into a loaf (or brick) then deep friend...Oh my gosh! I'm drooling just looking at them!

The delicious burgers are served on dark rye. I order mine, with the bread on the side for two reasons. 1. If the burger is on the bread, its so juicy it destroys the bread, and 2. 1/2 of the bread is enough for the whole burger (big, huge pieces of bread). AND! I put raw onions on the sandwich.

Oh my! Will Jan. 13th ever get here?!!!!

That review is for Hackney's on Harms, which is in Glenview, IL. We are going to the Hackney's in Lake Zurich. There are a couple more Hackneys, and all of them have the exact same food.

On Thursday's their special is Corned Beef and Cabbage, which is to die for!

I'm tellin' ya! Y'all have to get out here!
Oh yea...their cole slaw and fries are marvelous too! (But I try not to eat the fries since I pig out on the onion rings!)
Just thinking of the onion loaf is making my mouth water. It is just like the best thing you ever ate. And the Hackneys on Harms Rd in Glenview, Illinois is a house that was turned into a restaurant. I think that is their orginal restaurant and in the summer they have the best outside seating area under many old big trees.

I'm in for the meet in January. We will have a toast to all with our onion loaf!

Mary
Harms is my favorite location, then Lake Street, then Lake Zurich, then Wheeling.

But Mary, don't you agree, the food is identical at all locations?

(Paula and I will toast with Scotch to the loaf!) And yes, we will take pictures! To bad we won't have taste-o-vision!
Yes the food is identical at all the locations. I have never been to the one in Lake Zurich but I am sure it is nice. I like the one on Harms Rd. the best and then Lake St. As a matter of fact I rented a room at the one on Lake St. in Glenview for my daughter's baby shower seven years ago.
Everyone that came just went crazy over the onion loaf. I can't remember how many of them we all ate.
Have you ever went there on St. Patrick's Day?
They have bag pipers and singing and it is truly crazy on that day. It can take up to 4 hours to wait to get a table.
We also have had a Christmas party there and they have roving singers entertaining you with Christmas music.

Hackney's is GREAT!

Mary
In a couple of days I will know for sure if we can come. As for now we don't really know yet where we are going to be in the next year (Boston or Warsaw) and when we are moving. So, as soon as I know I PM you. Can I bring hubby?

This onion loaf does look very interesting!
Forgotten to say, that Boni's birthday is on the 11th too!!!!! :rimshot:
Yes, by all means..bring your husband! I do hope you are still here then, so we meet you!
Hmmmm, I'm not sure the picture made it any more appetizing to me than the name. Somehow onion loaf just doesn't sound good to me (the name, not the actual food itself, that sounds good). I guess maybe because meatloaf is gross, so anything with loaf in it I associate with gross!

So, I get what it is, but how do they mold it? Do they add something besides the breaded onions? It seems like those wouldn't stick together very well...
Glad I check this thread. I have the neighbor's bday party later on the 13th, but I'm in! I think I'll ask my Mom to join us too...she is the onion loaf lover and sheepie lover :D You guys would love Mom!

Hawkeye ordered from Adams Ribs in Joliet. There is no such place, but that was a funny episode.

Airfare to Chicago is cheap in January. Good shopping in that area........
I have to admit, it's very tempting. 8)
COME ON TAMMY! COME ON TAMMY! YOU CAN DO THIS!
 I'm feeling terribly deprived reading about all this food! i wonder if it exists in my neck of the  woods?
