Licking and making sores

Druby had a small sore on his testicles (will probably remove the problem area when he has had time to get over his heartworm treatment) the night before he was to go back to the vet for his checkup from the treatment. I put some neosporin on it that night and mentioned it to the vet. He said he would just put neo. on it, so at least I did the right thing. It cleared up in a couple of days.

Last night I noticed him licking excessively in that area and discovered he now has 3 small sores in the same location. I doctored them with neo. again.

Any idea what might be causing these sores? Do you think he is licking and making the area sore, or is he licking, because he is sore? He does lick and scratch some on his legs and paws and other areas, but it doesn't seem excessvie. He was totally covered in fleas when I rescued him the first of Nov. so I don't think it is an alergy to bites. If he were allergic to fleas he'd have been a miserable young man. I'm using Frontline on him. (1st big spray when I got him home after his rescue, and I think the vet dipped him when he had his heartworm treatment. He was also groomed then. I sprayed him again with Frontline just before taking him back to the vet for his checkup. I certainly don't put the Frontline in that area so I don't think it would be an allergy to it.

I'm feeding him a mixture of Premium food, Lamb & Rice, and Chicken and Rice, all Diamond brand. Our English Mastiff thrived on just the Premium food, but I thought the mixture might be even better. He had been fed the cheapest brands of dry food from the grocery store before I rescued him. (No particular brand, just whatever was on sale, from what I could tell.) He was underweight, but had intestinal worms, as well as heartworms. He has gained 8 lbs since the first of Nov. Vet thinks he is very close to ideal weight now. (You can feel his ribs, under a thin layer of "fat.")

Has he recently been groomed (clipped)? That often causes a case of the itchies, with more licking.
It could be any of the things you've mentioned but don't discount fleas totally. Some dogs are very sensitive to just one bite of a flea. Could be something like a staph infection, which your vet could determine and treat properly.

You need to get this situation corrected before having Druby neutered. Most vets remove the testicles but not the scrotum so the "problem area" will remain. Druby will then have the added irritation of the sutures and licking sutures is not a good thing.
He was groomed (clipped) when he got his heartworm treatment which would be on Nov. 5th. His hair was about 1/2 - 3/4 inch at that point. It is about an inch to 1 1/4 longer now. I brush/comb him daily. Used a rake for the 1st time last night.
Licking can also become a habit. Our Irish Setter and an Eskie we used to have both became compulsive lickers. I would try to distract him with a chew toy or kong or something when you see him licking.
I have wondered about his licking being a habit from his former days when he was flea/matt covered.

What is there besides peanut butter that is used inside a Kong? He has no interest in peanut butter at all. (Tried the Kong in his crate when I first got him.) He is less than comfortable in a crate, but that is another story.
I use the cheese that comes in an aeresol can and mix in treats with it. You really can use anything you want.
I have a friend who uses some human food leftovers, bread and dog treats. Makes a mash out of it and packs it in the kong. Then freezes them. Then they are all ready when you need them - just grab one out of the freezer when you need it.
I love the idea - I just haven't got that organized!
I mostly use cream cheese in kongs. My wigglebums love this treat and get it every night at bedtime when they go into their crates.
Marley is off peanut butter while we try to identify if she has allergies. I have been using string cheese and a treat, nuke it for 20 seconds and let cool and she is more than happy with the substitution.
Our boy Basil had the same problem once. Ask your Vet to take a blood sample and test for imune deficentcy (placets count). It could be mites and not fleas causing the problem. We use Tea Tree cream for skin rashes it works very well.
I hope this might help.

Hi,

Sorry to hear Druby is having troubles. It could be allergies, one of my boys has it and at certain times of the year licks exessively between his paws. I give him Benadryl which is safe for dogs to use and that usually stops him from the licking. I agree it's also habit forming as well.

About the Kong: a friend of mine puts Cheez Wiz in the Kong for her OES.

If I can suggest another stuffable toy, it's the Amaz-Ball. YOu stuff the treats in one end and the dog has to roll it around for them to come out the other side. They love it! It's a good way to be use whateverr treats you have if puppy doesn't like PB.
