Don't give up hope yet, I was told with my previous sheepie at age 7 she only had 6 months maybe more. She lived till 14.

How old is dolly? How tubby is she? It could be that she is carrying too much weight and it does affect the back legs as they get older. Do you also have her on supplements like Glucosamine/Chondroiton?

Also speak to the vet about something stronger to help manage the pain as she is sore at the moment, something like "Metacam" or along those lines if it does not interfere with the Cancer.

With cancer they usually feel so unwell that they stop eating and drop weight fast that is always a sign that it has progressed.

Take her to the vet and get them to look at her.

Best wishes with her I now how distressing it is. :ghug:
she is on tramadol for pain .. she was 60 and now she is bloated to 90 pounds.. dolly is 11 but when i resued her she was 6 months old and only 13 pounds they thought she would never live.. i got her in miami she was in a crack house and never touched by human hands all her brothers died .. it took over 3 years for her to even let you touch her .. now she sleeps right next to me and is the sweetest gal this is one rescue that shows what love can do .. but right now .... all my love is not helping,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Aw, poor Dolly. Speaking as someone who has also successfully fattened up her dogs, you're right, Dolly is too big. A little weight loss goes such a long way in a dog with a weak back end. I know it's tough to quit giving treats cold turkey. Can you maybe start replacing some of the treats with something with less calories, like maybe a carrot instead of a Milkbone, or something like that?

I do feel your pain with your old girl. Lucy's back end is very sore and weak, too. She does better on a daily dose of glucosamine/chondriotin and Metacam. When days are very bad, I also give her Tramadol, too. Luckily, she's very lean. It's watching her struggle on her light frame that drives me to keep the boys at good weights because, at their size, if they have to go through something similar when they're old, it's going to be disastrous. :(
If it was me the question would always be Is she feeling alot of pain? Like many others have and will mention, my family had a dog that the vet told us every year for five years that we should let him go. He was a bit slow and sometimes needs help up. But he was a happy dog ant that is why we waited. You have to look into her eyes and know what is best. But we all know that this is hard on you and her. :ghug:
The first thing I would do is stop feeding simple carbs, it feeds the cancer cells. Try replacing usual treats with healthier options such as apple, carrot, green beans, plain yogurt, etc. Have you considered supplements? My Beau had synovi sarcoma, after surgery and 21 radiation treatments we put him on CAS Options, an immune and antioxidant support. It's a mix of vitamins and mushrooms and was recommended by the oncologist. Beau was given 6 months max, he lived a good life for 2 years. Because his front leg was his cancer site he did have a horrible limp and needed help to get up, I would (gently) massage his other legs and down his spine daily. Beau was on 100mgs of dermaxx daily so I also gave him milk thistle for liver support. I wish you the best, having been there I know how difficult this is to go through. :ghug:
Awe, I know this is so hard! Of course you want to spoil her. Just give her low calorie treats like's already been mentioned. I give mine raw carrots, broccoli, apple pieces, squash and cucumber slices, green beans . Out of those she should like something. The raw ones tend to really fill them up so they don't want as much.

I'm so sorry! Hang in there! :ghug:
Bestdogs is correct, I would cut down her calories significantly. Can you gve her things like green beans and carrots for treats? Even air popped popcorn would be better than some of the treats available.

Has she gained so much just from treats? Tramadol shold not put weight on her. Is she on a steroid? That is a HUGE amount of weight to upt on in so short a time.

Poor puppy!!
i am feeding dolly carrots and not too much she does really not eat it is more like her loose skin hanging and she is very swollen .. she is not on steroids of any kind !! today she was walking better i had a long talk with
her and asked her what i should do .. she is not ready yet !! when i rescued her 11 years ago in a crach house they told me she would never make it so she is proving them all wrong
Keep fighting Dolly!!!
I hope you can get some of that weight off her. I'm sure it will make some difference.
Up the veggies for her and cut back on the dry. Lightly steam broccoli, celery, grean beans, pumpkin and carrot then add to the smaller amount of dry. Makes it more appetising without the calories. It will make a huge difference for the backend, I had to take weight of Kelsey and she is doing amazingly better now by keeping her leaner now.

You really do need to work on the blow out in weight, she will have her good days and not so good days. Glad to hear she is walking better today.

Another suggestion is dogs with cancer is putting them on a digestive enzyme supplement in their meals.

Something like Prozyme it helps enormously as it has all good in it and helps aid the system.
It sounds like Dolly is such a trooper and what an angel you are for providing her with the love and a good home that she so deserved.

You know I think she's special and so are you.

We all send our love to her.

Marianne and the boys
There are some cancers in humans that cause weight gain. It is fluid - not fat. Perhaps you could ask your vet if this might be the case with her?
the vet told me it is more fluid then fat.. she is loving her veggies and we are just living day to day.. now i am more worried about daytona the 13yr old she is starting to trip on her front legs now and just looking so sad :(
I was also wondering how much of the extra was fluid. You might ask the vet if her kidneys are doing ok, and if there is something you could do to help her eliminate the excess fluid that won't cause other problems.

I know how hard it is to see a beloved friend begin to struggle. Sending thoughts and hugs to both of you.
