Hand feeding

Here is an interesting problem, or is it? I started hand feeding Max when he was quite young, he is now turning three years this month and it seems he's hooked on hand feeding. He will only eat his kibble if it is hand fed. He'll paw at his dish until I or another family member feed him. Is he a big baby?? I always hear people saying it's good to do this, but is it OK that it goes on for this long?? The good thing is he's not possessive of his food at all, he even shares it with other dogs

I hand feed Obe every once in while. Maybe once every couple of months and definitely not the whole amount. I guess if you/family dont mind doing it then it is ok. Guess you have just one spoiled sheepie.
Well, you did train him to ONLY eat from you hand. If you don't want this to carry on then let him figure out how to eat from the bowl and don't get up to "help" him. You are still teaching him to eat from your hand, it's only you who can stop the behavior.

Sorry to say it but he is not spoiled at all. He is very well trained.
Try feeding Max from your hand while your hand is inside the dish (or as near to inside as you can get). Then gradually once he's used to that, put a kibble inside the dish at the end of your finger and tap the dish. Gradually move your hand further away. Once your hand is not near the dish and Max is eating the kibble, you can add more until he's got his full serving.
When we got Phoebe she wouldn't eat until she had some command to do so. She just sat by her dish and looked at me. It was hard because I didn't know the command and she didn't come with instructions. I tried everything I could think of and finally realized that I had to say "Okay" and pat her on the shoulder. I very gradually said the "okay" softer and with less conviction. Then I gradually changed the pat so it was just a touch. Finally she learned to eat relatively consistently without the commands. I say relatively because she still has mornings when she looks like she's waiting for something but it could be that she just has tummy issues that day.
I sure wish that her first family had thought things through before they trained her on some of this stuff and then abandonded her when she was a year old. Poor thing was pretty hungry before she figured out it was okay to eat in this house.
By the way, the finger tapping thing is something all my dogs have learned. If I tap my toe on the kitchen floor, they think I've dropped food and they are compelled to come and clean it up.
Have you tried feeding him in a kong? I wonder if he learned associate 'treat feeding' as away from you hand he could navigate to eating by himself.
