New here

Hi to all, I`ve been reading & reading & reading :D ALL THE POSTS because I want a sheepie so bad! So after many months I found someone who has puppies for sale but she is not registered. She says they are pure bred & they will be vaccinated & have his tail cut... don`t know why .....& he will come with a vet`s health book. Should I go visit them? I`m so confused . Should I only buy from someone who is registered ?

Hi Rita and welcome to the forum :D

If you visit the puppies BEFORE you have it in your head what makes a good puppy, commonsense will probably fly out the window. If you want a good puppy with the best chance at growing up healthy, you need to ask the right questions and make sure they're answered. If you don't like what you hear, you need look somewhere else.

If you visit the OESCA website you'll see a list of conditions known to affect this beautiful breed- http://www.oeshealth.org/ Do you know if this breeder has had the parents x-rayed and their hips rated by OFA?

Oh, I know there's other things you're supposed to ask too. The "good breeders" who are members here can tell you. Maybe this will also help- http://oldenglishsheepdogclubofamerica. ... owning.htm

I know it's hard to be patient but you'll be happy you were if you select the right pup. Good luck in your search...
WELCOME!

Puppies are so cute and hard to resist. But they are a life time committment, a well cared for sheepie can live 15 or 16 years. So you want to be sure you start out with the healthiest puppy possible.

A good way to do that is to buy your puppy form someone who is educated and knowledgeable and breeds to better. Odds are pretty slim that you will find that in a backyard breeder of unregistered pups.

Please read MORE!!!! You have the luxury of choosing the best pup for you!!! Take the time and read all the threads here. There is Valuable information that you cannot get any where else!!!!

YOu have so many quality breeders here that are willing to give you all the reasons why buying from someone who is a BYB or does not test, is a mistake.
Welcome from not so sunny (today) Arizona. I agree, research, research, check and double check. :D :D
Welcome from Colorado. Please do lots of research. Please please do not buy from a puppy mill or BYB. Visit oesca and find a breeder their!!!!!!!
Hi Rita,

Welcome. Everyone is right...do your homework first. Unless you are showing in Europe, all reputable breeders will dock their dogs tails...it is part of the OES breed standard in the USA.
THANK YOU SO MUCH! I will look into it because she can not tell me much about the parents & was real nice till I started asking too many questions by phone. I will keep searching .......
Hi Rita!

I couldn't agree more about reading and researching before getting a puppy, I just wanted to say, welcome to the forum!!! You will learn so much here before you get your puppy and even more when you have him!
Hi Rita sending G'days from Australia, good luck in your search for an OES and do research and do ask plenty of questions

It will pay off in the long term with hopefully a healthy bundle of fuzz. :D

Major warning bells here! Run, don't walk, away from this breeder. Of course she was real nice til you started asking questions, she thought she had an easy buyer. BYB don't want educated buyers who ask questions, they only want people who are ignorant about the breed and don't understand the risk they are taking when they buy them. Keep on looking, the perfect dog for you is out there.
Rita, Welcome from Denver. Great advise form all above. Another way to think about this is that it is sort of like buying a car. Not as much money in the initial outlay but a lot more time commitment. You would not buy a brand new car from someone that you met on the street corner! Don't buy a pure bread puppy from someone like that either. Reputable beeders may cost more but just like reputable car dealers but it is worth it in the long run.
