No waiting at the DMV or RMV. No lines! A miracle!

Let me tell you a little story....

It was Friday, July 3, 1992. The day before the holiday weekend. I needed to go to the RMV. I got there -- absolutely no line! Amazing! A miracle Friday!

I took care of my business immediately, wished my "teller" a happy holiday, left the building, walked into the parking lot and didn't see the curb from which I was stepping down.

My heel caught the back of the curb but not my toes. CRACK! I heard as my ankle twisted under me. Up into the air went my registration papers, wallet, license and credit card. They were gathered up for me by a passer-by.

It was so painful I stayed down, and the registry called an ambulance. It wasn't broken, but a nasty sprain and a few weeks on crutches.

But it was my miracle Friday -- there was no waiting at the ER, either.

A BANNER DAY for sure  You are lucky it was only a turned ankle. WIth that kinda shock it could have been Cardiac ARREST!!!!!!!!!!!!
 Poor Ron! I guess you know now if things are looking too good to be true.... look out and be careful!!
That had to be painful to get to the hospital ....let alone get up by yourself as it doesn't sound like there were people around!! Ouch!

I feel worse in a DMV line (the sick people I'm surrounded by) than waiting in a waiting room at a hospital.
Ouch Ron!

Now you've gone ahead and done it...ruined your perfectly good day that occurred back in 92.That there was no lineup was indeed a miracle! That you weren't hurt worse was also a miracle...despite the nasty sprain to your ankle..coulda been worse! No lineup at the ER either..another miracle. You know the pope could sign you up for Sainthood I believe..if not we forum members will use these events to apply for it on your behalf.

Hey wait a min...it really was a fantastic day!!!

You take care of yourself! Hope you are able to post again about another good day within the next decade or two. :D

Marianne
I didn't tell you all about last Tuesday yet.

You all know that I have been having some major computer issues here at oes.org International Headquarters (or as I like to call it, my former dining room).

A lot of you also know I've been having some health issues that had/have pretty much confined me here for the past year and a half or whatever.

Well all of that needs to change! Just since this summer I've lost all of my stamina, unable to walk for much distance at all and after a long discussion with my doctor, she made me promise to walk Mulligan at least once every day.

I have been frustrated with these computer issues and have been working on them for day after day attempting to get everything put back together. Monday morning Mulligan and I took Joan to the airport in Boston for a biz trip and we returned home and I jumped back in at my computer. He got his walks Monday as usual.

Monday night in bed, I noticed that for the first time in a few months my right knee's skin wasn't tender to the touch (a long story) and I was very pleased with that. It's been a long haul getting rid of that painful burning touch sensitivity.

Tuesday morning started as usual. Tuesday afternoon, Mulligan and I went to "get the mail". He gets to escort me to the mail box, then down the road a bit for a pee then back home. Joan has started him on a habit of playing with his leash, and he does this much to everyone's amusement on his way back from his "get the mail" pee. I was playing tug with his leash and he got under my feet and tangled up and I stepped on him and he yelped very loudly a few times as I was completely losing my balance.

As I was falling desperately trying to avoid falling on Mulligan, I saw a fallen branch on the ground rapidly approaching my head -- or the other way around. SOMEHOW, I managed to not fall on the dog AND to miss the branch, but at the expense of landing on -- yes you guessed it -- my right knee. I went down hard, but the ground is soft. My knee must have made a very deep dent in the ground and then the rest of me hit the ground.

I was OK. Mulligan sprang into action! He immediately ran to my head and shoulders and sat down next to me and kept pushing against me. He's never done this before, and I wasn't sure if he was hurt (he had been yelping as I was stepping on him) or if he was worried about me. I felt his legs all over and there didn't seem to be much of a problem, and then I did a self-assessment and I didn't seem to be in much pain, so all was good. Even my knee didn't suffer more than an EXTREMELY superficial scrape of some skin, it didn't hurt at all.

I went back in the house and sat at the computer desk. After about 10 minutes I started to have severe double-you-over abdominal pains. All sorts of thoughts flood through me -- I've injured my intestines, I've ruptured my spleen or maybe my appendix has burst. I went upstairs to fetch my cell phone just in case and after a few minutes the pain subsided. Phew! :phew: Crisis averted.

I called my brother a while later and told him the story, and about all the troubles with the computer, and joked that I shouldn't have gotten out of bed for the last week. Then we went further into discussing how I'd better be careful not to step in that divot my knee made and wind up twisting my ankle.

Ok, so it's time for the dinnertime walk. I get out my giant flashlight and go looking for the divot but I can't find it. Mullie and I continue on our walk, a nice long one and on the way back he did his duty, and we continued home. About halfway back I twisted my ankle on the side of the road where the pavement had broken away.

SNAP! I heard as my left ankle rolled and the pain was immediate and intense. I didn't fall down, but I am sure that the neighborhood heard my yelping and **again** Mulligan came running and sat down next to me and kept pushing. The pain was intense and I didn't have my cell phone with me. I still had about 1/3 of a mile to go home, and of course nobody is there to call anyway.

After a couple of minutes the pain started to ebb, and Mulligan and I found our way home. Wednesday the pain was back so I had to bite the bullet and allow Mulligan out into our unfenced back yard to do his thing. He peed, but he has NEVER gone potty in our back yard. By Wednesday afternoon, he did that for me. What a good boy! Wednesday night I picked Joan up at the airport, and Thursday the pain was going down so I figured I was on the mend.

I woke up Friday morning in agony. My foot had swelled up like it meant business and the pain was excruciating. I tried to do the "right" thing and called my primary care physician and even my insurance company to find where I could get some X-Rays done and read, and then where would I have to go for casting if needed? My PCP didn't return the call for hours, and the insurance company was sending me to a place 40 miles away (that's further than Boston!) for XRays. Finally I gave up trying to save them money and just went to the ER.

Well, this has been a long story, and I could go on, but the upshot is -- no break, no known reason for the swelling and pain (I have decided that it is a flare up of gout, probably triggered by the injury). This evening the swelling has gone down and some of the unbearable pain with it, I hope it stays unswelled overnight.

Sheeesh!

So when I next see my PCP, I will be telling her of the bad reaction I had to her last prescription. Pain and Swelling of the ankle. ;)
POOR RON!!!!!!!!!!

Ron, sorry to hear about your walking mishaps! Going to the ER is not fun either and I'm sure Joan was upset that she couldn't be there with you. I hope you are feeling better soon! Have you been icing it or anything to keep the swelling down?
Oh no... poor guy. I can't imagine all you go through ....medically which results in other stresses, but I hope the pain isn't so bad now.

Joan came back on Wednesday night, I went to the ER on Friday. No ice, and today the swelling (and pain!) is way down.

:ghug:  My goodness, Ron! Glad you are OK! I told someone the other day that there is nothing worse than that sickening feeling as you fall and know that you can't stop! Good for Mulligan for staying with you! :D
Oh my gosh! 8O How are you doing now? Did you ever figure out what the abdominal pain was from???

What a good boy Mulligan is..it really does sound like he was trying to help.

I'm not sure about "sickening," I think it was more like "AAAAHHHHhhhhh!" and "Oh poo!" ;)

The tummy pain was probably just a passing aortic dissection. Nothing to see here, move along. The only lingering after effect is my foot is still sore where it started just yesterday. If it is really gout as I suspect, it will take at least 3 days and as much as a week for the Naprosyn to calm it down completely.

Mullie really impresses me in a lot of ways.

Thanks!
Some people should not be left home alone...they go outside and then all hell breaks loose. Seriously, I am so sorry to hear about all of your accidents....jeez, I hope you feel better soon and the pain goes away. I know what you mean about the leash tangle and the divet in the grass, it will get you everytime. May good luck go your way.
What a good boy Mulligan was to help his dad when he needed him!

Put your feet up, get a good book, read the forum and take it easy!

:ghug:
Oh, you poor thing! I hope you are feeling better! Good thing you had Mulligan with you, he is amazing! ;)
Gosh, Ron. You've had a tough time lately!! I'm sure hope you're feeling better and that your computer problems are resolved. :)
Oh, poor Ron! I'm glad nothing serious happened to your ankle.

By the way, I'm stupid--what the heck is the RMV?
Thank you all for your sympathy. I needed it! My paw is still sore.

RMV=Registry of Motor Vehicles (Massachusetts)
Ack! They make you go to 2 places in MA?!
Wow!! Im just catching up on this...Awww Ron...you should wear shoes that have more support in them, with a higher ankle...workboot type...and please watch where you are going...Are you watching your gout with your diet? Im glad that it wasnt broken...sigh....just when youre starting to feel better too!! :?

Mullie IS a good boy!! Did he get an extra cookie?
