Gentle leader...wow!

I just purchased a gentle leader to use on Nigel. I think that I would like to keep my arms in their sockets, so it was worth a try.

To see me walking down the street with my 6 months old boy on that leader...you would think he was well mannered!!! He walked right next to me the whole time like a calm dog.

I am going to use this all the time for walking and training right now...eventually as he gets used to the idea of not pulling and jumping...I can switch back. I would recommend it for anyone with a pulling dog. It is so much better than him choking himself by pulling. :D :D :D

I'm glad it worked for you!

Whenever we'd use it on Barney he'd just walk and swat at his face the whole time. He NEVER got used to it  It made walking both annoying and hilarious at the same time.
I swear by them. When they're on, I've got the two best behaved dogs on the planet. 8)

I agree. Don't count on them learning too quickly to behave when off of the leader. It is so convincing that the other day I had a slip lead on Morgan in class and wasn't paying attention - I think the bruises will heal eventually :)

That's what Bear did, too. It annoyed him so much, it scared him into walking fine on a regular leash. All I had to do was show it to him and he'd walk perfectly!
Well Sami does ok on this. BUT BLUE 5 1/2 months old jumps around like a rabbit. Runs and falls back, will he get use to this or should I be walking by him self at first? I have used haulters which are ok, but he does want to pull and play.
I have heard really great things about these (and I think the dog I'm looking after REALLY needs one!! I think my right arm is now longer than my left after walking her and Tucker the other day!).

The only word to the wise is that I've heard it can place strain on the neck if the dog is still trying to pull a little and you are yanking his head away (i.e. if he's sniffing somewhere and you try to pull him back again), so just be cautious of that.

For Tucker I use a harness with the buckle at the front, so if he pulls it just turns him around again. I've heard it doesn't work as well as the Gentle Leader, but since I'm afraid of hurting his neck it's what I feel most comfortable using.

Have fun, and happy walking!
Gotta get me one of those for Heart :hearts:    NOW!!!
derby is 15 months he is great on one as soon as i purt him in a regular collar there goes my crazy pulling dog ..think he will need it forever
The gentle leader worked wonders for Maggie. I have been slowly weaning her off of it over the past 12 months but she still needs it sometimes, particularly if I am taking her on a high stimulation walk where I expect to see lots of dogs and people.

Good point. You are really never supposed to yank on it. You can do a steady but gentle pull to redirect them.

With Maggie, it actually works better to simply stop and wait til she figures out that she needs to get back into position before we keep walking. Treats help to train what is the right position. If you see Maggie and me walking down the street, you will see that as soon as she tries to dart ahead, I stop and then she backs up to stand next to me. It is funny to watch but it makes her do the work of figuring out where she needs to be.
