Liver Disorder

Hi Everyone,
This is my first time using this forum. Consdiering what I went thru last week, I figured I should share this info with other bobtail owners. We have a 6 yr old female named Penne, like the pasta. She is a sweetheart. In fact this is our second sheepdog. We are crazy about the breed and if I had my way, I probably would own 3 of them.
Anyways last week Penne had a bad night walking around vomitting all she wanted to do was go to the bathroom. The following morning she was quiet, which I expected. As the day passed I noticed her eyes were bulging the whites had turned blood shot red and her skin had turned a bright reddish pink. She also had a fever. First thing that came to my mind was she had gotten into something.
Well to make a long story short. I brought her to the vet, she was put on an IV to flush her system out. Xrays were taken and her liver as well as her spleen were enlarged. The vet did not know what to do. She stayed at the vet all day and part of the night. they brought her temp down and some of the redness had disappeared. They wanted to do alot more testing. I was already at over $500.00. I was recommeded to another Doctor and I took her. The vet reviewed her test results and xrays. She was diagnosed with a liver disorder and was told it can come on very quickly and is common in sheepdogs and collies. He gave her a vitamin shot and an antibiotic. She was put on medication, bland diet and
is doing well. Never would think that she had been sick.
The vet told me we need to get her liver under control and than go from there. If her spleen is still enlarge. Might have to be removed .She will be due for a return visit next week. Hopefully we will get some good
news.
I am sharing this because I would not want anyone to go thru what I did. Never heard of such a thing. THe vet has been great and says he has treated 3 sheepdogs with such. Hopefully this info will help other bobtail owners

So sorry to hear about your Penne and her problems. Hopefully, she will get better and her condition can be controlled with medicine and diet. Keep us posted. Thanks for sharing.
I sympathize with you, I lost my 8y/o Daisy in May to an idiopathic liver disease. It did come on fast and 3 weeks after initial diagnosis she was gone. I'm glad your girl is doing well, if you have any specialists in your area I would urge you to take her there. It is very expensive but they have the most up to date information and equipment avaliable. Good luck to you and Penne, please post again with an update.
Best wishes with Penne, please keep us updated on how she is going.

Hugs to you all.
