I accidentally posted this in another topic ![]() Well, since Mike and I are looking at renting a bigger place in the next few months (and, naturally, I am only considering homes that would let us have a dog!) it looks like we may be on the road to dog ownership, finally! We would like to get an adult dog- or at least an older puppy, because we are not always homer during the day to help puppy learn good potty and house habits. (I work m-f 8:30-5 and culinary class 3 evenings, Mike has Sundays, mondays, tuesdays, and wednesday mornings off) Unfortunately (or well, it is probably a good thing, because that means we have responsible owners) we do not have any oes rescues in the area, the closest one is in Chicago, and I don't really see any pop up on Pet finder either ('cept the one oes/pyr mix, and she's been adopted). Plus, I'd like to adopt locally, so that Mike and I can meet the doggie before we bring him/her home. (and we have limited funds/time off to be able to travel very far) So we were thinking about adopting an older dog from a breeder in the area, if there are any available. I've requested bredder referalls, but I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with getting the older sheepy from a breeder? I appreciate the insight! Karen ![]() |

If you go this route - be sure that you go to a reputable breeder and then make sure that the dog has been raised properly as a "dog" and hasn't been crated all his life and/or kept as a stud dog (couped up in a pen somewhere without any socialization and/or training) because you can end up having to undo a year or more of bad "raising" (which can sometimes be more time consuming and difficult than if you were to get a puppy).

Thanks Kristen, that's a good point.
My mom got our beloved childhood sheltie Eve this way. She had actually bred shelties before I was born and gotten out of it when we were little. Eve was actually a dog off of my mom's line though... But before Eve came, there was this dog Rooster, who just was miserable- he was a one person dog (his breeder was the one person) and couldn't bear to be seperated from her. Needless to say after about a week and a half, back he went!! So we'll have to be careful that the doggie is willing to love us and is "house suitable". Definitely a reason to meet him or her in person! |
I think your schedule would accomodate training a pup if that is what you would prefer to do, but getting an adult is a great idea too! I think you'll be a great owner whichever route you choose.
I don't know of any breeders in your area offhand, but I would suggest checking akc websites and of course oes club sites. |
Thanks Willowsprite! ![]() Of course, you're going to run that risk with an adult dog sometimes too, (yep- I read that hole in the wall story), but with a puppy, you know they're going to want to chew on things when they are teething. Well, anyways, we'll see. I'm sure that our pupper is out there!! Karen ![]() |
