Diapers, onesies?

My stepson and his wife are having their first baby this summer, a girl. I'm getting them some baby stuff as part of their Christmas gift. Who knew how hard it is to buy diapers? There is fat butt, small butt, sensitive butt, flat butt, I was overwhelmed and got something called Luvs. And then the onesies, which I assume are for when you're one but look awfully small....HELP! So far I have some Winnie the Pooh stuff, a bathtub that tells you if the water is too hot (if you don't know the waters too hot should you really consider motherhood?), a bag thing to hold all the junk you carry, blankets, lotions and shampoo stuff, baby picture frames. as far as clothes go should I go newborn or the next size? The newborn stuff looks really tiny, would it be worn for long? Other than a crib and that stuff what else do you need?

Buy for 3-6 months. The only babies that can ever wear newborn are usually premies.

GOOD LUCK...How exciting!!!!!
Onesies are one piece underwear for babies (hence the name onesies).
They come in different sizes.
it is hard to say what size clothes to buy. My DIL bought all 0-3 or NB, but when her baby was born she was 5lbs 6oz & needed preemie size.
Two of my children were 9lbs+ at birth & went right into 3-6mo size.
Just make sure whatever you buy is from a return friendly store.
Have fun! :D
Give them gift cards and let them pick out their own stuff. The real fun in baby clothes comes a little later on when they get a little bigger anyway so save your efforts for then. The baby baby stuff is lame!
Every kid is going to be different but whatever size they start out in... from the parents I've talked it, most wear each size equally the same until 1. ...which is usually a few times for each outfit or even once and then that's it. I guess it depends on how much you get.

You never want to buy too much lotion, diapers, etc b/c you never know what the kid will be most suitable in. I say this but I have $2-3 coupons for diapers and wipes, so I have stocked up on each size of the brand I used for J (because i firmly believe it's the best). You have no idea how many wipes I have in the closet (at least 25 refill packs). Cost a fortune when I buy at once, but it's worth it when I know how much I've saved.

I find that so many people buy mom's 0-3 month clothes, that many wish others would have bought other sizes since babies are often forgotten about after the initial birth/shower for them. You could always buy a few outfits and then buy other sizes. Then you can't go wrong.

Some people like to buy mommies a starter bottle kit, but you'd have to know if she has a preference. Avent is the most popular by FAR, but people like myself are just as happy with Playtex bottles that are super cheap and easy to use since they have disposable liners.

I personally wanted my mom to buy big stuff or clothes (older sizes) b/c other people would buy the small stuff. Diapers was never something exciting to get b/c ....they're diapers and something I can get anywhere. I wanted a swing, diaper disposal, pack n play, playmat with activities on top so baby can lay on floor, a stroller, carseat, crib, baby furniture, and things to decorate room with (frames, etc).

Other little stuff I wanted to start off with is a pacifier, humidifier, thermometer (vick's rocks), diaper bag, waterproof pad to go under bedding, a swaddle me (something easy to wrap baby in instead of receiving blanket... never used it but other moms love this thing and it's quite popular), a couple of toys that clip to carseat (although they don't need it until they're older since you smiling it enough to overstimulate them), and desitin.

I also hated that everyone bought blankets. So many dang blankets that never got used. Same with receiving blankets.

all of the above is just personal preference though. different strokes for different folks, but since these are topics on the baby board i go to ALLLLLLLL the time, I'm just giving the most popular response.

congrats to them!!! I hope they have an easy and healthy pregnancy. :)

edit* I can't believe I wrote stalked instead of stocked
While I agree with the above posts, I think it depends on
the family situation too. When I had my first son we were
really strapped for money, and I was so glad in the end
when I got formula from my mom. She bought me a
whole case of the big cans. Saved me from the stress of
worrying about affording it! I don't know if she is planning
to nurse, but I did not. Those cans of formula are so
expensive it's unreal. And the diapers are way up there too!
I used cloth, so I didn't have that expense. I don't know if I
could have afforded it the first time around. We used cloth with
Gabe for the first few months and then someone bought us a
huge case of disposables and I never went back. The
convenience really hooked me.
If money is tight I'd suggest those two things because they
seem to be the most expensive. But obviously your situation
may not call for either!
I think it's so much fun to get baby things ready and to
anticipate the arrival, she may not know what she will really
needs till the baby comes! That is a case for a certificate. Then
she gets the fun of picking something out for herself.

I'm trying to be practical since they don't have much money. I must admit I was shocked that a piece of paper you poop in and discard cost $20 8O .
I loved cloth diapers. I hated folding them. And Mother's Day Out made me buy disposables - which the oldest was allergic to!

How about a good camera? Digital, if possible. Maybe a monthly picture gift card to pay for the prints - you would end up with some of them!
Congrats on the upcoming baby, Holly!

I would check with them, and see if they have any specific needs. Maybe encourage them to register somewhere?
Onesies are a wonderful thing. They eliminate the clothes from gapping and the poor baby getting cold in the middle. They are a safe bet for the 1st year! They even make cute ones that are clothes in themselves - as this is a summer baby.

I was laughing so hard when I read this. Seems like you really haven't been around babies much. It's been what seems like 100 yrs since I've had a baby around so I'm not much help. I do remember onsies. I loved them, and my babies wore them all the time. How wonderfully exciting to have a new baby girl on the way!! Good Luck!
If you're trying to be practical, diapers, baby wipes and forumla would be tops on my list. The things you need the most of and are so expensive to buy at once. But, you're right about buying diapers. It's a challenge at first since they're so specific now.

As for clothes, I agree that the bigger sizes are needed more. Most folks will buy them the Newborn or 0-3 months for showers. She'll need the bigger sizes more as she grows.

There is so much baby stuff out there now, it's mind boggling! :o
The only thing about diapers (that I've heard--I personally have no experience with them yet), is that they vary greatly. Like my friend LOVES a certain brand, but her friend HATES that same brand. I love the idea of stocking them up on diapers, but I'd hate for them to end up being the wrong kind that doesn't work as well and they don't use them.
I always go for a swing. If they travel alot, or go visiting a lot, a folding travel swing is the greatest thing in the WORLD!!! My swing saved my sanity! Other than that, my favorite gift to give would have to be gift cards, then they will be sure to get only what they need or want. Good luck and best wishes!
Clothes, don't forget to keep in mind the month of birth when figuring sizes...... Car seat, play pen, stroller, punkin' seat, walker.........
I like to go for the safety products that people usually don't get, such as the wall socket covers, and cabinet door locks, sun visor for the car window........ the velcro rattle for the wrist is fantastic.

If she's going to use bottles, a sterilizer would be nice if she doesn't want the expense of those bags.. (if they still make them)

Diaper pail..............use caution, children can fall in head first, but can't always get out when filled with water...... (had a niece that drowned in one)

Baby monitor, with warning that neighbors can hear you.......

Congrats to them. Happy shopping.
