barfing up breakfast

Hey all...just a warning, this post isn't for the super squimish...
Buckley's been with us for a month & 1/2 now. The last 2-3 weeks he's been barfing up his breakfast (Literally!) 3-4 times a week. He's a pound puppy (ca 1 yr. old), he was only 70 lbs when we got him (ribs & hip bones poking through), turned in as a stray. He received a clean bill of health from the shelter & our vet (though she also thought he was 4-5 yrs. old by his teeth...needless to say we're searching for a new vet!). When he first came to us he ate super fast, but he's really slowed down now (you would think he'd puke earlier when he ate so fast!) We feed him & gracie at the same time on opposite sides of the kitchen. After he eats we take him out to potty. Sometimes the neighbor dogs get him excited, but we take him on a leash so he can't run around so soon after eating. I'm really at at loss...this never happens when he eats dinner & since it just recentaly started, it shouldn't be from nerves...Any suggestions??

Thanks!
The Bushnells

P.S. I know this is gross too...We've just been letting him eat it (it is his b'fst after all!). Is this good, bad, indifferent?? We figured that what they did before us humans came along...

Have you tried using an elevated dishbowl for his food and water?
I agree with the previous reply - though I know there is a lot of discussion concerning raised feeding bowls. I can only speak from experience on this one, and Guinney has always had one as we had it from our last sheepie Merlin. It works out just fine for us, but that is just one opinion.

Since Buckley only does this at breakfast, it does seem like there is something else going on. I do believe that each dog has their own "schedule" and metabolism. Again, just my opinion. Would it be possible to try just letting him quietly digest his food before letting him out in the mornings? You didn't say if he goes outside immediately after eating dinner or not, so don't know if this would work. I know that strenuous exercise just before or after eating is not something that is recommended and may be a cause of bloat in dogs, so that is why I am suggesting this. Kind of like not going swimming an hour after you eat!

I would definately consult your vet about the situation if it continues much longer. They may have much better advice too. But this is a place for learning and sharing, and I hope that this may help in some small way. As for the "after-eating" I am not sure that is a very good idea, since it may introduce bacteria that the dog's body is not used to? I'm not 100% on that one either, just doesn't sound like a very good idea.

Keep us posted! Good luck!

Cheers.
