| I get Obe a 30 lb bag of Eagle Pack Holistic and it is I think $45. It will last 3 wks to a month. He gets a cup and half in the morning and the same a night, teaspoon of yogurt (dessert) as well as 2 or 3 treats a day. |
It's the medical bills I'd be worried about. If you're worried about price of food, it may be too big of a dog for ya.  |

Really. If an extra $20 a month for a higher quality food is a major issue, right now might not be the time in your life for a large very expensive dog. I'm not trying to be insulting, even though I know I am coming across that way, but we've previously estimated the cost of a sheepdog at around $2,000 a year, if I recall correctly, without a major medical crisis. Major medical expenses have happened every 3 or 4 years for us. The last one was about $1,500 for just getting into his doggie travel bag and eating some bad things. |
| I cook for my boys but Boni had diarrhea in the last two days and we were lucky to have bought his pills a couple of months ago when he was sick, so today we only spent $45 at the vet and that's only a normal examination.
Even if you are very lucky and you don't have any medical issues, vaccination (puppy and yearly) and general check ups can cost you a lot too. So, as other people said food isn't that big of an issue when owning an OES or any kind of dog. It's the vet bill that really matters. |
| I go through about 40 pounds in 10 days or so - but that is 7 dogs. Sizes range from a 7 pound min pin to a 70 pound lab. (Wow, lots of 7's in there).
I never calculate cost - they are my dogs and they need to eat! We feed good food, and rarely need trips to the vet. (knock on wood.) I do have money set aside for unforseen medical expenses though. |

I don't think it's insulting at all, it's being realistic. It's smart to always plan for the worst because you'll never get yourself into trouble that way. To be honest, depending on the kinds of things you do with your dog, like how much you like to take them for activities or buy them toys or treats (and depending on the quality of those), I think that $2000 is very conservative. I think that's just bare essentials. |
| We did rent motorhomes and then buy a motorhome so we could travel with our dog on vacations... so should I add that into the equation?

| I agree Sheepdogs can be very expensive. I have dreamed of having a OES since I was a child and my parents had Flowers, the most wonderful sheepdog in the world!!!! I never could afford such a big expensive dog while I was raising my children. Now I have three! My oldest son calls them my dream dogs! They do need to go the vet occasionally. Just like the kids had to when they were little. Luckily all three of mine so far are quite healthy, but they do get into stuff and sometimes that requires a vet visit. Food is expensive too. I had to wait almost 30 years before I could have a sheepdog to call my own. It was so worth the wait. Good luck! |
