Sciatic nerve pain

One of the worse pains since my surgery has been this sharp pain that spears down my left leg. Total agony. Now they are telling me it is caused by sciatic nerve pain. Does anyone know of anything I can do to have this pain ease up?

Remember I just had abdominal, bowel, and bladder surgery 4 days ago.

I've had that pain, before my disk surgeries. Once down the right leg, the next time down the left leg. Utter AGONY!!! My guess is that since you just had surgery, maybe your organs are swelled still, which is putting pressure on the sciatic nerve. Before considering anything more drastic (like surgery) I would wait until the swelling from the surgery goes down to see if the pain subsides.

Also what you might try is a pain management doctor. In our area, these doctors are also anesthesiologists for surgeries. They can give you a shot in the back to ease the pain.

Cold compresses always worked better for me than heat. But most doctors have told me to alternate between the two.

Hope this helps, and that you feel better soon!!
A pain management doctor sounds like a good idea.

What about alternative methods either acupuncture or acupressure or massage of some kind? That way you don't get more drugs. Just make sure your doctor approves, of course :D
Wyn, did you mention this to your doctor?
Yes I mentioned it to the doctor. All he said was that it was probably inflamed from something during the surgery and put me on a smooth muscle relaxer and to take that in conjuntion with my pain medicaiton and my antibiotics.
I'm so sorry you're in pain. Being pregnant, I know all about sciatic nerve pain. Most of the girls on our baby board were told there wasn't much they can do other than deal with it unfortunately. There are stretches and exercises you can do to help that I'm sure are online. I hope it passes soon for you!! :(
can you even stretch? i know your stomach and abdomen must really hurt...but stretching would help...im supposed to stretch my shoulders ''thru'' the pain ..yeah right.... :?

im all for the drugs!!
Hopefully once you are up and moving around your back will feel better. The nerve is probably irritated from being in one position so long for the surgery. When you can walk some, Try heat or cold to your back as was suggested in an earlier post. Ask the doc about anti-inflamatory to help with the nerve irritation.
Hope you get feeling better soon.

:D My sincere sympathy to you! :ghug: I had chronic sciatica for nearly three years and felt awful. However, the following helps: cold : decreases imflammation;heat: encourages muscle relaxation. The source of pain was pressure on the spinal chord from 3 discs. I chose not to have surgery for a variety of reasons. I found relief from chiropractic , physiotherapy, and massage therapy: all work with muscle groups, followed by specific regular, exercises. Selective use of pain medication helped when the pain was severe. Rest helped me and walking Willoughby as well when the pain was under control.
It sounds as if this may well be a side -effect of surgery and should subside. Good luck! :)
