PUPPY

DOES ANYONE KNOW IF YOU GET A PUPPY AT 12-13 WEEKS INSTEAD OF 6-8 WEEKS IF YOU HAVE MISSED OUT ON TO MUCH OF THE VERY IMPORTANT TIME IN THEIR LIFE?

Hi Jenny, and welcome to the forum, I don't think you will regret getting the puppy, there is only a couple of weeks difference, although these are important weeks I feel you can catch up on this missed time, I got my Dash of Class and he was 12 weeks old when he came to my home and I was happy I made that decision he was my faithful friend for 10 years, so in my opinion go ahead and get your puppy but make sure it is coming from a registered breeder.

Hugs from all at Tikki-ti-boo :ghug:
Jenny---Welcome to the forum!!!!

There are many, many members who have gotten their sheepies at that age and much older (rescues).

In my limited experience with my new sheepie, although I did get Heart at 8 weeks, she slept alot for the first couple of weeks ---sure--- there were play times and exploring, but I think you will not miss too much in the couple weeks between 8 and 12....

Again, welcome and I know you will get great advice from all the wonderful people who are here.....Pictures, Pictures, Pictures.....when you get her (him)...............
No breeder of any dog should allow a pup under the age of 8 weeks to go to a new home.

8 Weeks is the bare minumum age to let go to a new home. Any younger then completely unethical & very detrimental to a pups well being and developing behaviour.

My last OES was 16 weeks when she flew in from overseas, no problems with her and settled in with her new family very quickly, was even potty trained by the time she arrived. WOO HOO.
THANKS FOR THE REPLIES. I LOST MY BEST FRIEND OF TEN YEARS, LENARD THE DAY AFTER EASTER. WHAT A WONDERFUL BLESSING THIS SHEEPIE WAS TO MANY PEOPLE. I THEN ADOPTED JACEY , A BEAUTIFUL SHEEPIE. I HAD TO PUT HER DOWN DUE TO AGGRESSION PROBLEMS. SHE HAD BEEN ABUSED TO THE POINT THAT SHE COULD NEVER TRUST A HUMAN AGAIN, IT WAS NOT HER FAULT!!! THIS SHOULD BE A LESSON TO LET EVERYONE KNOW THAT THESE PRECIOUS CREATURES NEVER FORGET WHEN THEY ARE ABUSED. I GUESS I AM JUST TRYING TO DO EVERYTHING RIGHT THIS GO AROUND BECAUSE I CAN NOT LOSE ANOTHER SHEEPIE. I DIDN'T MEAN TO MAKE ANYONE SAD OR DOWN, THE TIME YOU HAVE WITH THESE GUYS SHOULD BE APPRECIATED. THE BREEDER IS REGISTERED, THE TIMING OF 12-13 WEEKS IS DUE TO HOLIDAY TRAVEL.
I got my last at 12 -13 weeks and he was a breeze to housebreak...some things are easier if they are a tiny bit older.
I know how you feel too...I lost my Winston at 4 1/2 because of the melamine in the dog food from China. I went to a show breeder after that for the same reason...couldn't bear to lose another...Now we have Nigel!!!
Sorry about your loss of Lenard.

I thought I've read here that a few extra weeks past 8 weeks with the mother can be very good for the puppy?!?
THANKS FOR THE INFORMATION YOU GUYS.
Baloo was already around 11 weeks or so when he came to our house and He is terrific!

Enjoy your new puppy!!

Registered with whom? Registered with the AKC means absolutely nothing. You want to find a breeder who is a member of the OESCA and is in good standing.
Hi Jenny it is hard when you lose an OES as they are so loving, I lost my first one at just 11 months and my second one was only 6 1/2 when he had to be relieved of pain so I know how you feel, have a nice holiday come home pick up your new friend and enjoy this special companionship given by an OES as I am sure you will.
Hello Jenny I got mine at nine weeks almost ten to be quite honest. So dont see a problem with getting one a few weeks later. If the breeder is going to turn a pup lose before eight weeks I would be ware. My next one will be a rescue. I want him/her (not sure) to be at least a year preferably older.
