Starting the ear cleaning

All, I did a search on ear cleaning, but didn't quite see this particular situation.

Ralph is a holy terror when it comes to putting solutions in his ears. He doesn't mind the massage when it is in or the cotton balls to clean them out - in fact, he quite likes that. But to get the stuff in!!! Karen and I both have to hold him, one tries to get his ear up and the stuff in. He shakes his head, slinks down, and pulls back.

We're trying to give him a treat to nibble while we put stuff in, but he almost wants to take our fingers off.

Any suggestions?

Wet a cotton ball with the solution and stick it in his ear and then massage. It doesn't quite have that flooding sensation and doesn't make them panic when they see the bottle and you start to flip the ear over and then the OMG!!!! reaction happens.
Rodrigo, (the Vet that is my friend , and handler, here in SMA Mexico is a Holistic Vet. I can see I am going to be in for a whole new learning experience down here!!) told me what he is using to clean and 'clean up' the ears of dogs now.... and it works and ears stay healthy and smell good.

Mix Glycerine and Tea Tree Oil and every day just wipe with a cotten ball....

learning new tricks every day!

Just a note- pure essential tea tree oil is very strong stuff, so check you have the right quantity and mix it well, I'm sure your vet knows it can burn the skin if used too strong.

I warm the sol'n slightly, so it is not such a cold shock to the ear. This works best if you do it right from the beginning. If your dog has had cold ear sol'n put in their ear already, they may be harder to convince that it will be better now.

It can be toxic also if used in the incorrect amount.
Rodrigo just emailed me the ratio/gtts.

The ear cleaner is glycerine in a small bottle, around 3 oz. And only 5 drops of the Tea tree essencial oil.

use 2 times a day if ears are bad, once a week. Then use once a week. Ears will be healthy and pink and smell really good.
Thanks Ali, for the ratios, am trying this one for the ears. :D
I'm going to try this too, mmmm fresh ears here we come!
Cold drops could be the cause. Did you ever tried cold ear drops yourself especially when the ear is sore? To drop not directly into the opening but a little bit above (to let drops gently go down) helps as well.
