Vomit...

all night long. Stella has been throwing up every hour on the hour. Started with a gush of watery vomit and now just a yellow gooey substance.
She wont drink water and other than the vomit she seems ok, but I will be washing and mopping all morning.
Zak had this problem a few weeks back, but not as bad-
I would like to hold out for the vet if possible- it is sunday and our emergency vet is unbelievably expensive, but if she continues i will take her.
Any danger I should be looking out for? I don't feel there is an obstruction- I am thinking she just ate some weird grass or something, since we have been making daily trips to the park.

So suggestions, just wanted to say Poor Stella! I hope she feels better soon.
Just make sure she stays hydrated. If she is not peeing or it is really concentrated, she is too dry. Keep an eye on her for any other signs.
Good luck today. Don't you just hate it when they get sick on the weekend?
Personally, Mark, I would take her to the vet, or at least call an emergency clinic's number to see if they think you should bring her in. She could be vomiting for a variety of reasons but all night long is too long. I forget how old Stella is.

Not to try and worry you, but our first OES was vomitting a lot of bile for a whole entire night and he ended up aspirating and getting aspiration pneumonia. He was 13 and did not recover.
She won't drink water and is pretty lethargic now, so I will bring her in to the vet this morning. Thanks.
m
Poor Stella! How is she Mark!!!
Sips of Pediatlyt (msp)......or ice........and good that you are taking he to get checked out..............Hope she feels better real soon..........
This is what Sami did in the summer, with the chicken strips from costco, ate it whole and vomit and sneezed but she did drink, she did bring it back up had vet check her still, he got her to throw uo again and did his feeling thing to see if stuck, she was very scrached and the sneezing was from water up her nose. But never feed her treats again like that.
I stopped the chicken treats about a week ago- from Petco- not Costco, but wasn't taking any chances.
I called the emergency vet and they said to bring her in, but if I wanted I could watch her to for a bit and see if she improves-
She ate an ice cube- (thanks Val) and even drank some water.
She hasn't vomited in about an hour, but seems sad and keeps crating herself. If she vomits one more time, I will bring her to emergency.
I have never walked out of that place for under $800.00- Most of the time, it's way over.
It's always hard to know when to take them to the vet because of the expense. Since most of us paid quite a bit for our pets, we don't want them to die, but we also don't want to jump the gun and run to the vet with every little thing. It's a hard thing to balance. Good luck and hope your's is feeling better soon :)
NO MORE FOOD OR WATER!!!!!

No food or water for 12 hours after vomiting. If the vomiting goes on for a long time you'll need to go to the vet so that they can administer subcutaneous fluids.

Once the 12 hours has passed, you can feed BOILED white rice and BOILED very lean hamburger. Boiled to remove the fat.

That's my recommendation, and my vet's as well.
OK UPDATE:
Took Stella to the Emergency Vet and they decided to keep her there overnight on IV fluids for her dehydration- They are also doing blood work and X-rays.
It is very tough to decide when it's an emergency and when you can wait a day and see your normal vet.
Of course once I got there, Stella went from being lethargic to being a bouncing pup- but that's expected.
I miss her already- and oh- the estimate is $1500.00 with a $1000.00 deposit I had to pay before they would start work.
I call in 2 hours for test results.
Best wishes with stella, hope it is nothing too serious and she is home with you soon. It is just awful with what vets charge and we have no choice but to pay the ridiculous costs when our dogs are unwell. :(

Get well soon stella we are thinking of you sweetie.
Thanks for the update on Stella. I hope all goes well.

I think you made the right decision in taking her to the Emergency Vets. If it were me....I would have done the same thing being I'm such a "better to be safe than sorry" thinker.....and at least they were able to get a jump on the problem a couple of days earlier.

Please keep us posted.

I'm not a vet and I haven't seen Stella, but that seems a little excessive to keep her there for fluids. A liter of water under the skin usually does very nicely. Maybe they saw something they didn't like. :(

:plead: I hope all is well with Stella. :plead:

...and :ghug: for you (and your wallet), Mark :ghug:
My normal vet says that this hospital is "out of control expensive", but the best in our area. I guess it's wise to heir on the side of caution. And the truth is I would pay ANYTHING to save my guys, but I don't like being taken advantage of and this sort of felt like that.
Maybe I should wait for the test results before I complain!
Best wishes to Stella!!!
OH NO, this is just a little too close to the experience we had when Hannah got pancreatitus.

Personally, I think it's a huge relief that they are keeping her there and giving the IV. Hannah had an IV for almost a week. And I believe it was the quick intervention that ultimately saved her life in a situation most dogs do not recover from. I am grateful that you took her, in spite of the great expense, I believe down the road you will not regret it.

Has anything stressed her immune system lately? For example: In the weeks leading up to Hannah's pancreatitus she had had a surgery with anesthesia, an ear infection and given cortizone (since I've read cortizone can help exascerbate it), shots, peanut butter and garlic bread (just an inch by inch square) but I've learned these are oily rich foods and also garlic is bad for them. Anything happen to her that may have added up to overstress her immune system?

It's imperative that their pancreas is given a rest and no food and drinks! Even though our natural inclination is to hydrate them, which must be done intravenously.

And just another thought. When I had taken Hannah to the emergency vet and had told them to do everything regardless of cost even though Hannah's behavior didn't seem that abnormal to me either only she'd been throwing up so much and the emergency vet had seemed like something serious was going on. The vet was so surprised that I was stressing to spend money and she said that is usually not the case that people will spend to treat their pets. So from my point of view maybe you just have a really good vet there that's trying to save your dog probably sensing your great concern in spite of the costs. And also, I can honestly tell you now that not a day goes by that I regret that bill, having Hannah here against the odds was worth every penny and more.

We are sincerely hoping that Stella does not have anything serious and just a bug! We are sending our best thoughts Stella's way! :ghug: And for you too, I know it's so hard.
True, true- I love that little girl so much- I would NEVER forgive myself if I ever put money before her health. It's just a shock how much things cost sometimes.
Waiting for a call from the vet, but the nurse said the tests look good and it's probably a virus or something she ate. I want her home now- it's so quiet here- although zak is sprawling out on the couch and planning to redecorate her crate.
New show alert!

"Bobtail Eye for the Sheepgirl"

Well, it could work with a little more time.
haha ron

Well the emergency vet wants me to transfer stella to my regular vet today- They say they can't stop her vomiting. They don't see any obstructions and her blood work looks fine, but she continues to vomit every few hours.
So- they did do the right thing by keeping her there. She is so sensitive and attached to zak and myself, I hate the idea of her in some vets cage.
could barely sleep all night. How do you people with children do it?
Poor Stella. Good thing you took her in. If she is still vomiting, she would have been too dehydrated without the IV fluid. Good luck with your regular vet getting Stella better.

:ghug: to you , Stella and Zak
Glad you decided to take her in as well. I hope they can find out what is wrong and she can come home to you soon!
Poor Stella, POOR YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sending healing Karma your way!!!!!!!!!
Keep us posted!
OK- so far so good. Stella is home and made it through the night without any problems. She is on tons of anti-vommiting medication- so we will know more once this wears off. We still have no idea what this was- but hopefully all is well and things will go back to normal.
Thanks for all your support. It helps so much having your advice, recommendations and vast experience to pull from in times of crisis.
It takes a Sheepie village.
Love, Mark
First thing I did this morning was log on to get an update on Stella. I hope they figure out what is wrong and make her better soon! Try not to worry about her sleeping in a cage. She is probably exhausted and weak from this ordeal and if she could choose, she'd choose the place with the IV drip.
I am sooo sorry Stella is sick. :( I have been through that myself with Harley and can honestly say I could not even function worrying about my boy.

Vet could not find anything wrong with him like your Stella but he kept throwing up .

I decided to take him home and sit out on my deck (just him and I) and lots of water and I held the water bowl and watched him keep throwing up. After about a hour these tiny little leaves started coming up. He stopped throwing up after about 7 leaves came up.

Turns out he ate the leave off a plant I had just planted ,later I found out the plant we very toxic to dogs.

I probably should not have made him keep drinking and throwing up but there was nothing left since the vet could not find the cause and 2 days went by.
