Maggie's gone--I'm in shock

I'm in shock. My brother called this evening to tell me that Maggie, my parents' sheepdog, had taken a nap and never woke up. She was 10. She was the best dog there ever was. She was so much fun and crazy and would do the sheepie 500 around our house. She would run and jump on the couch and it would slam against the wall. She was the smoothest, quietest, sneakiest counter surfer there ever was. She was the best to cuddle in a blanket with on the couch. She would sleep on my bed with me. She would chase the cats. When she was a few months old she dug a hole in the back yard and my dad stepped into it in the dark and broke his ankle. Maggie hated fireworks. She hated loud noises. She wasn't fond of other dogs. She was NOT happy when Barney spent one night at their house. She loved her box; she would go in there to sleep or when she was scared or she'd hide whatever loot she stole in there. She pulled individual Kleenexes out of the box. She would fetch the tennis ball about 3 times and then sit down and say I'm done. She didn't have a mean bone in her body.

At least she went quickly and didn't suffer as far as we can tell.

Maggie, I love you and I'll miss you and I'll always always remember you.

Thanks for all your kind words everyone. It really means a lot to me. I'm feeling better now, now that the shock of it has worn off. She was lucky that she was fine one moment and then gone the next. Our last dog had a horrible stomach cancer and was in pain for the last while of her life.

It was just so hard to hear my dad cry.

The part that made my mom the saddest was she said was because Maggie was her last 'family' dog. She was the last dog that we had when kids were still living at home. They are planning to get another puppy soon (anyone have male puppies?), but it will be their dog, not the family dog.

Wow Steph, this really got to me  I know exactly what you mean, since my father is a very tough, macho guy, and the only times I've ever seen him cry has been at the loss of dogs.

On a happier note, though, the dogs my parents have had over the last few years (post empty nest  ) have been a very different and special experience for them. My Dad's first girl dog (that was all his, not a "family" dog) had flowers and hearts on everything she owned  They also have time now to do the things they always wanted to with their dogs, like agility and obedience trials.

Please tell your parents how many people are thinking of them, and feeling for their grief, and yours. :ghug:
I'm so sorry about Maggie, any age is too young. Hugs to you and your parents as well.
I am sorry for the loss of your beloved childhood companion. A terrible shock, but also a blessing that she did not suffer.

Almost 2 years ago, we lost the dog who grew up with our children, as well. However, we acquired our second sheepie after our oldest moved out and the pups when all but 2 of our kids were on their own. Every grown kid who lives in the area helped pick out each pup. When my kids are home, they definitely regard the dogs as theirs. No one will replace Maggie, but her memory will help you guide new puppies.
I'm so sorry to hear of your loss. Maggie was beautiful.

I am so sorry for you and your parents! You were one of the first people to welcome me to the forum and had shared about her. I remember actually catching my breath because she looked to me so much like our Katrina had looked. So I always had a kind of soft spot for her and the stories you shared about her.

She will be missed by us as well. Thank you for sharing how special she was with us! :ghug:
I'm soo sorry for your loss of Maggie!
