The skin is usually a darker pigment under the black/grey.
I don't know why.
I've noticed this too. Scruffy had cut on her back and when we shaved around it everything that had dark hair looked blue. I kept thinking she had gotten in to something and they I would look closer and realize it was just her skin. The hair is growing back really black from those areas now.
I peeked through Nanny's dark hair and the skin there does look bluish. Weird! :lmt: However, it sounds like that is true for all OES, so I guess it's normal. :phew:
Years ago someone told me that if a pup had the blue skin where the black coat was, their coat colour would remain dark after their coat change, and if the skin was pink where their black coat was they would be completely grey. I have yet to see a pup with pink skin where the black coat is.
bear skin is pink under the dark coat but she does have some blue skin on the whites
I have asked my vet about this and he said lots of dogs have blue skin. My 6 month old Daisy has darker blue skin than Frank and Daphne, who are older. The older dogs skin used to be a darker blue, I think they are fading. Must be all the washing  I hope they don't shrink too. Maybe I need to lay them flat to dry.
I always heard if it was truly blue they stayed dark as well and I had one that did. Actually would love another one if anyone knows of a breeder with blue merles in their line please let me know. Both mine now have darker skin under the gray areas but definitely not blue.
I took a good look at Blues new hair and it is still very dark, I remember Sami new stuff had lots of gray, so it will be interesting to see what happens in the next few months.
Keep me posted. My husband was so disappointed when Marley and Morgan started trurning gray. Max never grayed, except for his ears and the back of one leg, and he lived to 13. As he got older there was some more white in places that used to be black but no gray.
Rufus has blue skin where the fur is black.
