OES Puppy Exercise

:D Hi All

We are a first time OES owner and mmember of this forum> We have been lucky enough to rescue a 5 month old OES, Thomas, who is absolutely wonderful. He has added so much to our family, thre children 3, 6, 15, already.

We are a little rusty on dog care not having had one for about 20years!!! We are a bit concerned about what is about the right level of excercise and time to feed> Does anyone have any advice on this for us please?

How often are you feeding now? 3x? I'd be moving towards 2x per day and maybe just keep it there instead of one giant feed per day. I'm a 2x a day feeder as I'm trying to retard bloat in my big chested dogs.

As for exercise, they want a lot. But when tired, they just crash. I'd be avoiding lots of climbing, jumping etc but general running about is fine, walking is fine. A good walk several times a day perhaps with some free time off leash should do nicely.

Remember, a tired puppy is a well behaved puppy. It's the pent up energy that plays out as mischief.
I have a 5 month old too!!!! Heart has boundless energy..I take her for a walk (long) and when we come home we play fetch with one of her many, many toys for about another 20 minutes...then, all of a sudden she is DONE.........and she "passes" out......................
Puppy class in the morning pretty much wears Nigel out for the afternoon. That is only one day a week though. The more exercise they get, the less boredom time to go to the trash, etc.
Welcome!
Helloo Alex!
We are first time OES owners as well, and we have a puppy that is 4 months old and her energy is amazing!!
We feed Dusty first thing in the morning and again in the evening after our evening meal.
We had some great advice from our puppy class trainer:
Never let a puppy eat before you.
Sit higher than you.
Go in the door before you.
??? dont know if it was good advice or not...but it has worked for our little one and she is such a good sheepie!!
From experience Dusty loves lots of walks, but they will tell you when they have had enough!!

Thank you all so much for your advice - we're taking all of it on board!! Thomas is now having 2 meals a day, plenty of exercise and playtime and is adjusting to his position in 'our pack' - at the moment he thinks he is below my husband and I but above the children - we're working on that one - any advice would be welcome! We're finding this forum extremely useful - thanks for all of your help. On another note, if anyone had told me how hilariously funny this breed is I wouldn't have believed them - we have laughed more in the last few weeks than we have for a long time!
uh oh, you are now hooked. No other breed will do. 8)

Have the kids feed Thomas, have the kids groom Thomas (with you helping out), teach the kids how to walk Thomas. Teach the kids how to give a few commands and have them obeyed.

Also teach the kids how not to respond to Thomas first thing when they enter the house. Humans should have time to remove their coats, hats, gloves, etc before acknowledging the dog (that's hard for anyone to learn.)

Impress upon your children that being pack leaders is the very best way to show love to a dog. The dogs crave good leaders.
I was wondering if you can overwalk a puppy too , Archie is 14 weeks next week and loves plodding along on his lead almost as much as rolling and chasing his best friend ( a labrador pup his age ) from across the road ! :DHe does become much calmer in the evenings after a good walk in the day though .....much less trying to nibble everyone that moves !
Julie .
Welcome from Colorado and yes you can over walk a puppy. I would take Obe at that age for a walk to the corner then back to the opposite corner and come home. I did this a twice a day. As he got older and bones more developed we started going around the block, then two blocks etc. I am not sure what age we started going around the block but I would stop by your vets office and ask what they thought. Others from the forum here could have some better advice as far as age and distance goes.
