PetSmart Groomer accused me of being a bad Mom

Max was out all weekend- playing , rolling and getting muddy and gross. We should have stopped him - but- he was having such a good time that we let him romp.

Of course- he was a mess. Our regular groomer couldn't get him in until Friday, so I called PetSmart and they could groom him today. Let me just say- I have never been a big fan of the groomers at the PetSmart we go to in a "neighboring" town, but they do in a pinch.

When we were checking in - the groomer gal came out and was horrified. She kept saying " Poor Baby" , like he had been abused. And then she looked at me and said his coat had been neglected. No Sir. He has no mats- he was only dirty. And he had only been like that since Saturday. If she would have just commented I would have been ok. But she started in on how much work an OES is- and they need daily brushing. I know that.

So- I left him, against better judgemnet, with strict instructions he was not to be shaved. ( that is typically what they want to do- and his coat is in fine shape)

I was embarrased- really embarrased, as the little poodles and toy dogs were brought in with bows, ribbons and party dresses.

We may be Country BUMPKINS- BUT- we take care of our kid.

AND- even though I don't think the gal at PetSmart would believe me- WE CAN EVEN READ.

My posts are always so long...

That's horrible. If anyone made me feel that way about my kid/dog, I probably would have gotten very defensive. Hope you love the clean dog.
I am afraid I would have had to write a stroppy letter to the Management about customer/staff courtesy. Our other oes only went to the groomers once. They shaved her, she was in season as well I did know that but when I rang they said it wouldnt matter, but of course it had been the groomers daughter and she wasnt quite the ticket. Anyway poor Katy came out with grazes on her tummy where she had caught her. Needless to say she never went again we used to trim her ourselves and then hubby bought some clippers...
Wow, Lori... that sucks. :( Dogs are supposed to get dirty every now and again. That's their idea of fun! She was totally out of line!

And she shouldn't complain or be shocked about dirty dogs... that's her job as a groomer! And you can't compare Max's coat after a fun weekend outside to those silly frou frou dogs that sit around all day yapping and looking prissy. (Sorry to anyone who owns those 2lb dogs with painted nails and bows.)

I'm sorry that lady was rude to you. Imagine what she would say if Prof. Boni had gone in after her vacation when her dog smelled like deadfishdeerpoo!

That groomer needs to lighten up. There's a difference between being dirty and being neglected. And every dog wants a chance to play in the mud now and then.
It's been my experience that the groomers at PetSmart aren't exactly high-quality. I'm sure that's not an absolute at all PetSmarts, but assuming that's the case at yours, just remember from whom the comment came. It's kind of like being told you make poor decisions by OJ Simpson, you know?
Lori, if it makes you feel any better...I had a similar experience with petsmart groomers too....they told me that panda was matted (she wasnt), how high maitenence they were, how long it was going to take them...etc..

and I specifically told them not to shave her or express her anal glands....

they didnt shave her per se, but they chopped areas that they said that she had knots in( and i suspect THEY put them in by giving her a crappy wash job) AND they expressed her anal glands...

Oh and the best yet....it took 6 hours to get her home....

I will NEVER take her there again.....i was in tears....we go to a small pop and pop place now called smelly dog...the boys get her done in an hour...love her up and know both of us by name....

deep breath Lori....and find someone else
Is it bad to have their anal glands expressed?
Wow, Lori! I'm surprised you didn't just turn around and leave her! I can't believe anybody would say that to a dog that is not even close to being neglected! Maybe she just got too used to grooming "clean" dogs.

  Exactly! Thank you Stephanie! These are the reasons I don't take my boys to the groomer and I do it myself. It would have been very embarrassing if some one else had to give Boni a bath. He wasn't just dirty, he smelled awful! :P

Ps: I mean the deadfishdeerpoo parfume is available for fussy puppies, just let me know and Boni can send you some!

I was told by my vet not to do it UNLESS the dog was doing the butt scoot...she said if you start doing it, it may need to be continually done...the dog should be able to express it themselves by a good diet and poop.
Don't feel bad. I took Carl to the groomer one day because I thought he could have a nice day away and they could do the labor. Having 2 dogs in show coat sucks!! When I got there, they launched into a 20 minute lecture on the history of OES and their working purpose and how hard it is to keep coat on a dog. Carl had maybe 2 inches of coat and it was all combed out!!!
I listened politely to them, gave them instructions and left. Came back when they said that they'd be done and they hadn't even started him!! So I told them that I'd just pay the fee for the daycare and pick him up they refused to give him to me because he needed to have one good grooming in his life!!! 8O

When I came back to get him in another 3 hours, I paid them, they brought Carl out with bows on his ears like he was a girl, I took the leash and then I dropped about 5 show pics on their counter and said now you tell me who needs the grooming lesson here. And I've never been to another groomer again!!!

:o I cannot believe the nerve of some of these groomers!
Ugh!! Know it all groomers are the worst!!
So that had to happen to you Lori. :( If you were a bad Mom, Max would have been matted all over.

Just think about it this way. If they were good groomers, they wouldn't be at Petsmart.
I brought my toy poodle to Petsmart quite a few times and his cuts were never right. I was always disappointed. I finally found a groomer that specialized in Poodle cuts and she was cheaper than Petsmart.

I got Pepsi in December, he was 10 months old and in the spring he was going through his puppy coat change. I was keeping up for the most part but decided I wanted him short for the spring and summer.
When I left I gave specific instructions, one length all over!!
When I came to pick him up he had a Lion Head... (YUCK!!) and the groomer started lecturing me about the way to properly brush him.
He claimed Pepsi had some matting around his neck area (where our Shepherd used to mouth him when they played). If that was the only matting he had and during the coat change, I think I had been doing a pretty good job!! I took him home and fixed his head and have been grooming him myself ever since.
Well- picked up Maxie Paws at PetSmart.

He was brushed out- so- the "horrible coat" must have been easier to groom than Groomer Gal thought.

His paws are almost square instead of round- so- John will be fixing those tonight. He was not shaved around his potty areas- which I asked for.

He had a diaper wrap on- with no pad insert when I picked him up. Luckily he hadn't peed. I took 3 extra pads- explaining his situation- and letting GG (groomer girl) know that I wanted it put back on for sanitary purposes after his bath.

He has a shaved spot right up the center of his face- from nose to forehead. :?: :?:

And a bowl cut for bangs.

All for $95- tooth brushing was an xtra $15. I opted against that, being afraid of what they may do to his gums.

Trina- his WONDERFUL regular groomer charges us $ 55- and bought a box of pads just for him- so I wouldn't have to worry about it. We will wait till she can see Max next time. he loves her and she loves him.

He is a sleep in my lap as I write this- waiting for Daddy to come home and fix him.
kisses to a good boy who put up with a lot today....

hey lor, will you give him a little piece of cheese for me.....?

I just gave him a big kiss on his scalped nose- and told him the hunk of cheddar was compliments of Darcy.

He sends a sleepy Thanks and sloppy kisses your way!!
:clappurple:
Lori,
Sorry that was a traumatic day for the both of you. I'm sure his Dad will fix him right up when he gets home.
Maybe a little piece of pepperoni with the cheese for the good boy?? That's Finn's extra, extra special treat.
At least the GG didn't paint his toenails :( And hair grows sooo fast

We just may give him a little extra treat! Daddy decided that Max is sleeping so well - we'll give him a rest tonight and just cuddle. We can fix him tomorrow. Luckily- no school pictures soon - hahaha - and yes- hair grows fast!
