New Halloween Tradition

Here in Gurnee, IL, trick or treating is always the Sunday before Halloween (if Halloween doesn't fall on a Sunday) from 1 -4. I live in a very small neighborhood, and in the past often have had no trick or treaters.

But! I always make sure I have lots o' candy, just in case.

Today was no exception. Not a one. I know there are at least 6 families here in the "hood".

My neighbor, and friend, Harlene had tons of candy too. This was her first year here. She's a sixty-something terrific lady. I called her after trick and treat hours were over, and asked her if she would take her candy and make 6 plastic bags of candy, and that I would be by her house in about 15 minutes.

I did the same.

We meet up, and went to all the houses with children, rang the bell, and when they (mostly the kids answered) we yelled, "TRICK OR TREAT!!!" and gave each house 2 bags of candy! The kids were thrilled! (As were the parents!) OH! Did I mention, we brought Pirate, Keira and Harlene's westie/bishon Missy with?

It was so much fun! I think a new tradition has been born in our neighborhood. Next year...I'M DRESSIN' UP!

That sounds like a lot of fun! :D
What a great idea, and not a lot of candy left hanging around calling your name :D

Sounds like fun for you and how much better could those kids have it, you do Halloween deliveries, they don't even have to leave their houses.
Great Idea! I am sure you had a lot of fun.
Now thats just lazy trick or treating!!

What a great idea though I bet the kids were thrilled at the deliveries!!
What a GREAT idea!!!
We live in the country ( wayyyy out- still only have access to dial up :( )
and we have always said how much we miss ghosts and gobblins knocking at our doors. I might borrow your fun idea next year!!!!
Sounds like fun :D
That is a good idea Deb!

Last year it rained and I only had a few kids. So I took the Teddy Grahams that I bought since all my neighbors have toddlers and dropped off all the leftover bags at the furthest neighbor's house who didn't come down due to the rain.

The plan this year: I bought toddler candy again - M&M's. I basically plan on emptying the bowl on those three families and then turning off the light.
Actually, m&m's are bad for toddlers, especially the peanut ones. They are a big choke hazard.
One of the classmates of the girl I do homecare for is mostly vegetative from choking on an M&M as a toddler.
I remember the evening he came in the ER - he was already blue. He survived, but suffered major brain damage and organ failure. This happened years ago, but the damage is permanent.
Sorry for the depressing note :( , but it is something I feel strongly about.
my son has adverse reaction to colouring, flavourings and preservatives. so if i want to do any sleeping for the next month i haveto sub out his collected candy for "safe" candy. hes only two so it not that hard at the moment :)

this is both his and my first time trick or treating growing up in the uk my parents don't agree with it. my dad says in an (sorry) americanised holiday not a real one and refuses to call in halloween only all hallows eve.

but i live in america now so trick or treating and costumes here we come

zoe and einy
What a great idea! Halloween is on the actual day in our community and unfortunately, we aren't home :( I'm told by one of our neightbors that there are about 60 kids before 4:00. I'll need to take out the doorbell batteries so the dogs don't go completely nuts. Of course, I always buy a ton of candy too
Hi Deb,

Before clicking on your post, I admit my mind was racing as to what kind of new tradition you could have started....AHA!!!!!

That was hilarious and very ingenious!!! The kids will be talking about it for years to come! Great idea!

I think by the time they're toddlers, you realize what they can/can't choke on. My son can stuff an entire pringle in his mouth, tries to stuff half a banana in, an entire chicken nugget, every single one of his crackers AT ONCE, etc... he loves food like his momma. No matter how many times I think he'll choke, he doesn't. The kids at playgroup LOVE all kinds of peanuts! .......uh, esp covered in chocolate  J isn't allowed chocolate, but I don't mind eating it for him. 8)
That was nice of you and your neighbor! So then no one goes out to trick or treat on actual Halloween?

The neighborhood we just moved to has a LOT of kids, but I don't get home from work until 6 at the very earliest...What's with kids trick or treating so early these days! Oh well, their loss!
I don't know about the other towns around here, but we always have it from 1 -4 the sunday before.

I think that sort of stinks. We used to come home after school, and mom would always make chili for us. We'd put on our costumes, and I remember going out, and it was dark, and windy, you'd have a flashlight with you (and make spooky faces!) and you had to put a coat on over your costume (until you got out of mom's eyeshot).

It was much scarier, and much cooler back then!!!
Kids in our neighborhood never do the trick or treat thing :( The houses are too far apart, and the driveways are REALLY steep. ....plus, ice, snow etc)

Sadly, I don't see US going house to house with candy for the same reasons!

Near us (in a much less mountainous neighborhood) The whole neighborhood gets together in September to decorate and hold Halloween early, in memory of a little boy who was terminally ill (a few years back) and who's last wish was to have Halloween before he died. So, the neighborhood held Halloween early for him, since he wasn't expected to live till the end of October. They still do it, and collect money for a medical research charity in the little boys name at the same time. Makes me cry my eyes out every time its shown on the news.
ill take pictures on wed....no one is going to believe how many kids we get....i bought $126.00 worth of candy (16 bags of costco candy) we get an average of 300 kids every hollloween.....
