Shaving manly area...

For those with boy dogs, do they pee on themselves? Does their fur on their underside and inside of their legs get all gross?

Lately Barney's has. Do you shave that area clean or can you keep some fur? I don't want him to look too funny, but it's gotten to the point where it's aggravating his skin...

I keep the whole under carriage of Bosley trimmed short. It is not visable from the top or sides, so who cares? Inside the legs, the whole belly, the groin area and even going up his chest..between his front legs.

We've never had an issue with the pee...Yes, there are some yellow clumps of fur sometimes, but not a lot at all. I just cut them off.
Thanks Nicole.

Yeah, we've never had a problem before either, but ever since moving last month Barney has taken a different stance while peeing. Before he was more stretched out and would rarely ever get himself. Now he's much more hunched up and it just seems to get on him more. Don't know why...
I had to laugh wne I read your post because Tasker just got the "fall Clip down". Unlike many of you, I don't have a grooming table and clipping means sitting on the floor next to him breaking my back.

I was laying on the floor the other day, with Tasker stradling me clipping the nether regions when Doug walked in. He found it incredibly funny that I nose to nose with Taskers manhood    But it was the ONLY way I could get a good view and be sure I wouldn't nick anything!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm laughing hysterically at that image Ginny. Although, I do understand why you had to do it that way. It's hard to see under there to clip them.

Steph- I keep Beau's undercarriage trimmed down, too. It's just cleaner. :)
Ahh Ginny. You crack me up. Doug should have taken a picture...
Clyde smells like a toddler from peeing on himself. Feet, belly, legs-- he pees on all of it. If he didn't love peeing on concrete so much perhaps he wouldn't get so much splash back. I clip him a little tighter in those areas but he'll get it on him no matter how much hair is there. I just try to keep up with wipedowns and rinseless shampoo to keep him smelling acceptable.
Nanny is a girl (obviously), but the hair on the insides of her back legs gets gross too. :P Her hair isn't long (she's only 11 weeks), so I wouldn't want to cut it. I use those disposable puppy/dog wipes on her backside a few times a day. And a wet wash cloth when it gets bad. Is it really because they peed on themself? She seems to squat pretty good when she goes, so I don't know how that happens.

How often do you bathe Barney? I was going to ask you guys about that, because I know you shouldn't bathe too often.
I bathe Barney when I can no longer stand to be in the same room!

Not really, but I bathe him once every few months, but he's not a 'dirty dog'...he doesn't like to get muddy or wet or anything.
This discussion is always going on here. I bath Tasker about 3 times a year unless some catastrophe happens. It AMAZES me that there are people here who bath every week or two!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Don't worry Ginny - we definitely do not fit into that category. :phew:

Harry gets the baby wipe treatment on the back of his front legs while going pee. It only usually happens when he is paying attention to something else and not what he should be doing.
I keep Bert's tummy and "private" area clipped short. partly because of urine, but also because he matts up in that area very fast too. :?
Yeah, when they start peeing like a RainBird rotary sprinkler, it's time to trim. If you boy also dribbles, it's a good idea to at least trim the inside of the downhill leg.....or both if he's an equal side leg lifter. Girls also need to have their areas trimmed and both need to have a passage for the poop......unless they are in full show coat, then it becomes a bit more tricky. Good time to do a good wash down and check for any other under carriage problems problems, stickers in the "arm pits" and such.
Don't EVEN get me started on the POOP SHOOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Actually, Barney's equipment is clean and trimmed of hair, so we're not getting the sprinkler effect. And he doesn't lift his leg, so that's not an issue! Somehow he's just getting a lot of it on himself lately!

Wimmin. It's always about insulting the guyz with some of yas.
I was wondering how everyone grooms down there  I show Elliott and was wondering how close to his equipment I should trim. Also how about around his jewels?
Thank goodness for sheepie girls and no dingle dangles. :P
Now I feel better, George occassionally gets his front left leg, near the paw, and he dribbles on his back legs a little too. Hubby gives him a hard time, asking him when he is going to start hiking.....hate to tell him that George will still make a mess on himself sometimes.....oh well, we love him anyways. :D

Oh my gosh I cant stop laughing at this picture in my mind.
Yep, that's Chewie too. I hate that uriny reek. He gets frequent undercarriage washes for that reason. I also keep it trimmed a bit shorter under there.
haha Ginny dont feel bad!! I do the same thing......and i dont have a grooming table either....so I totally get it!!

Way too funny!!

This is why Luca's face smells....yes his face. Depending upon his stance at that moment he will leak on himself and also feels compelled to lick himself after that....He is in Specials coat but I still shave a portion of the Nether Region for cleanliness...but he still pees on himslef ....

By the end of the week his face smells like a stinky gym sock so washing his face and undercarriage is inevitable if he is not already getting a bath to get ready for a show.

In addition I also use a tablespoon of vinegar from time to time in the shampoo mixture I use it to neutralize the odor as even when I wash him there is still sometimes a lingering odor.
LOL - yep the pee face happens here too. Thanks Sunny for bringing that up! 8)

I will have to post new pics - Chewie got a haircut. But, he licks down there more the last few days because of being clipped. No razor burn, but he is messing around down there more! Ugghhh
Ahh, Luca does the same thing right after I shave him....it's as though I have done something tramatic there and he wants to make sure that all of his precious parts are still there....boys!

Luca keeps that up for a day or too but I have to remind him to cut it out so that he doesn't keep doing it.... He eventually forgets and goes back to "normal" hygiene freak mode :D

Can't wait to see the new pictures of Chewie "Naked"!!!
Just trimmed Jack. His head was right there watching, "Hey remember this isn't a Bris.....plus we aren't Jewish are we?" I was laughing so hard at his intense interest it was hard doing a complete trim and not taking a bit extra.
Ginny, Darcy!

I don't have a grooming table so when I shave Boni's "fütyi" I put him on his back so I get the best view of it. He just lays there without moving at all. As Charlie would say, he is too scared to move. :D

He pees on his front legs most of the times and once he nearly peed on his nose because while he was peeing he was sniffing something so hard, his nose got in the pee stream's way.
My biggest pee problem is that Ty is a lifter and Tasker is a squatter so when we go outside Tasker squats and TY runs over to stick his head in and see what's going on. You think he would have figured it out by now  . So when we come inside Ty needs to have his head washed.

Dawn - if you haven't already, ask Sunny or Marnie to show you the appropriate boy trim...you can probably take off more than you think. But consult first.

I'm with Lisa - thank heaven for girl dogs! :P Well, we've been invaded this year by a token boy, but he's neutered and kept naked! And even with that, he's stinkier than most...

As for bathing, mine probably get bathed every two weeks, and even that probably isn't enough. They're active dogs that get into whatever they can - and they sleep on my bed!

Whatever works, though.

I hope that's a "cute" word.... lol

Would I use it:
1) At a doctor's convention
2) Talking to a 7 year old
3) In a bar, talking about the guy who almost caused a car accident

Funny story. I'd be afraid to move if someone was that close to me with clippers. Come to think of it, I don't move very much when the barber is shaving just my neck, and I could live without my neck.

Thanks for bringing this up. I was just wondering if I was a "bad mother" because we've had Bogie for 4 weeks and he hasn't had a bath yet. I don't think he needs one; I've been using puppy wipes and they seeem to do the trick. A new dog salon just opened in the area and they're offering a $15.00 special for puppies. I'm tempted to take them up on it!

 Ron, it would be #2. #1 would be in Latin, #3 would be @#%*!!!
something i had to learn years ago is when shaving down...... make sure you leave the 'wick' on the end....... that is what directs the stream of the urine!

I just wish Checkers would get witht he program at this point! lol. He WAS totally housebroken until he started teething and now he is all boy mush brain again........

Oh?? What am i supposed to remember???? but what a funny little man he is!! lloves his mama
