Bad Manager, Bad Day - Post Office

Just wanted to start off by saying I have NEVER had a situation not be resolved after talking to a manager.

I am so upset that my entire face is swollen red. ...although it could be from being fat too ;)

Anyway, so three times I've had to call the post office in the past 2 weeks because I've not received a package that had "delivered" on confirmation OR I have received someone else's package. With Christmas coming and my big fear from last year (had a package take like 2 months to get here that my mom had crazy expensive stuff in), I felt it's important that this matter get cleared up before the holidays.

The first two times I was told someone was going to talk to my carrier, but it wasn't "the manager," so I felt obligated to call today just to make sure he has been notified of the problem.

We live in a SMALL neighborhood with maybe 20 homes, so for me to have 3 mix ups in 2 weeks is HUGE ...and only tells me that others have to be getting the wrong mail too. I ONLY called to see if she was simply talked to and told to be more careful since it happened YET AGAIN. I did not want her to get in trouble or anything....

yet when I called and asked to speak to the manger...
manager: who wants to know??

me: well, I'd like to know my problem is specifically being addressed to him, so may I speak to him?

manager: sure. <long pause with nothing that followed>

me: Hello? Could you tell me the manager's name?

manager: Jim

me: May I talk to him?

m: This is him.

<not believing him... I still continued>

me: stated problem and waited for some sort of reassurance that he will or HAS talked to the carrier.

<long awkward pause where I got 0 response>

manager: okay. is that all?

me: <totally confused> Well, as a manager, I was hoping you could give me reassurance this won't happen again or that there you'll talk to her..

manager: Look I'm not going to fire her!

me: What? I have never insinuated that I wanted her fired. I'm so confused.

manager: Look, what's your address. (i give it to him) I'll just send her out there so you two can duke it out. That seems to be the only solution.

me: Are you kidding me? I have never in my years had a manager tell me they were going to tell the person a customer was filing a complaint about to personally work it out with them. Two, while I understand me having to tell you what neighborhood I'm in...... i see no need in even mentioning a specific name.

manager: <laughs>

me: i thank him and hang up crying my eyes out.

So upset, I decided there is no way this was going to be it. So I call the main post office in Anchorage and find the number to the manager at my post office (whose office happens to be at the main office I called). He was appalled by what happened as he does his best to make out the story through my crazy hiccup crying  ................and says he will handle it.

I still cannot believe what happened. Am happy and satisfied after talking to the manager, but have no idea how someone like him became a manager of sorts (forgot his exact title) at a smaller office.

I need ice cream.

Wow that is completely horrible! Unbelievable, unprofessional, uncourteous, unkind, uncalled for, unwarranted, unlikeable, unreal!!

I am so glad you escalated the matter. I would follow up with a written letter of complaint to the Anchorage office about Jim.
Yes, that was very rude. Glad you followed up with main post office. Whatever happened to "customer service"?
I had never called the post office before and had this problem. In fact, the people I talked to (who I can put faces to since it's so small) were super helpful and nice. So........ this really was the last thing I expected. Even pretending to care and say they would ask her to be more careful was what I had expected at least.
I hope that it is now taken care of, but if it happens again call the Post Master in town. Do not forget the "I am pregent with a toddler, I can not take this stress". Most men are afraid of pregant women. I have heard from some people that the Eagle River Post Office is the one to drive you crazy.
I changed jobs a few months ago and am now a Consultant in our Consumer Information/ Company Compliance Department....In other words, the Complaints department... ...We have to wear both hats, and investigate all complaints, get both sides, and then respond back to the customer with the resolution...Whatever that might be....for every phone call/complant we get....

I am appalled by the treatment that you received. Yes, at times we do a lot of eye-rolling and sarcastic commments within our own little team...but NEVER let the customer be treated with anything than utmost respect and dignity....Even when they don't deserve it...

You really need to send an email to whoever you need to and have this addressed. There must be a customer service or commincatiosn department that you can contact....by email....Even if it is to that same individual that you spoke to about "Jim". He has threatened you physically and also suggested he will use your "personal information"...Even jokingly that is a huge no-no....

You go girl!!!!!!!

What a jerk!!!!!

There is no way anyone should ever be allowed to talk to a customer like that! I'm so glad you went above him to talk to someone who was actually professional and considerate. Your mail carrier might not need to be fired, but "Jim" should be!

I hope you got your ice cream! :) You know, Ben & Jerry's makes a few of their flavors in a low-fat frozen yogurt form or as Light Ice-Cream. They both taste pretty much the same as the regular kind. That way, you don't feel too guilty for eating it! Since regular ice-cream is pretty unhealthy. The light version of Phish Food is the best!! :P
The last time I made a complaint to the Post Office, our tax refund didn't get delivered. Our Mail lady was leaving our box open and our mail was blowing out of the mailbox and into the Desert. Her complaint was that our mailbox didn't shut. Hmm, it shut everytime I closed it "properly"
We finally thought we solved the problem by installing a new mailbox with a slot. All she had to do was shove it in the slot and not have to close anything. The Door closes after the mail is dropped into the box below. Instead she would leave it half in and half out.
I called and complained again. They said they would look into it.

A few months later we got a new mail person. About 3 months later I am in the post office and a guy is complaining that his Mail Lady leaves the door to the mailbox open and his mail is blowing into the Desert. I said "Oh, you must have our old mail lady!" I described her, he said yup. I told him to file a complaint because I know at least one person who had complained about her before.
As far as I know she is still a Mail Lady.

I am very sorry you had to go through that Mrs J. I hope Jim loses his job. What he did was VERY wrong!

Customer service these days is a JOKE!!
Whaaaat the heck???

I'll be examining name tags next time I go to the post office! :x  ...Jim, huh?

(I live in the same tiny town as Mrs J, for those who dont know  )
A few years ago my neborhood had a mailman that just could not get all the mail in the correct box. A first everyone complained. Then when it would not get better, we desided that we would embrace the idot's way. We got to see people that we would not see very often. We think that he may have brought the hood together. When he left we kind of missed him. Unforturnatly your problem is not as funny.

That was the fear I had when I got off the phone with him. His attitude was horrible and he did not say anything in a joking manner. He was just as irritated that I was complaining about her as I was shocked by his replies.

My face is STILL red and swollen from the incident. (it takes awhile for me to calm down over something esp. with raynaud's disease -- emotions strike the red cow look in my face)

Can you imagine all of us protesting outside the post office with "hate jim" signs.
I'm appalled you were treated that way and I hope the matter is resolved. The person you spoke to was not very sympathetic at all it seems and assumed you wanted to have a person fired just because you complained? He was putting words in your mouth and made the wrong assumption when you deserved to be heard and have your concerns listened to. I hope something good comes out of all this.

Sorry you had to go through this.

Marianne (giving you a big hug via cyber space)
That is HORRIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And these are GOVERNMENT employees!!!! I would DEMAND a formal apology!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Unacceptable!!!! We pay a premium cost for mail delivery --- and the service keeps getting worse and worse. I see it in our post office all the time now. What used to be a small town- customer service driven office, is now a "hurry up and get 'em through the line" establsihment.

Don't let it drop--- take the advise of others and send a letter or whatever it takes. WE are THEIR customers- and THEY work for US.

As a customer service trainer for 10 years NOTHING makes me so angry.

Now MY face is red!!!
