Greetings from Illinois

I seem to do everything backwards. I attended the Chicago area Sheepiefest this weekend, and found out about this forum while there. I found you, and now I hear I need to introduce myself.

I'm Jeanne, and I currently have 4 OES and 3 border collies. It seems very strange to have so few OES, as in the past we had upwards of 10 or 11 at a time. We are trying to have a smaller pack in preparation for retirement some day in the foggy future.

My husband and I used to breed and show, and now herding is pretty much the extent of the doggie activities.

OK, Kristine! Did I do this right?

Jeanne

You did great! Now as Kristine mentioned, we need PICTURES :D :D :D

It was great meeting you on Saturday. I hope you had as much fun as us!
Welcome from Barney and Maggie, St. Louis
Um, Kristine...time for lesson two...yikes! This is HARD!

We did have a great time, thanks. Neifi was so quiet on the drive home, I almost stopped to make sure he was still there!

Jeanne
Welcome--from Pearl, Cosmo and Heart!!!! Oh! I forgot me too, Val!!!!!
Welcome!!!

We live in Elgin, so not too far away.

I only have 1/2 a sheepdog...my sis has the other 1/2 :D

I was the one at SheepieFest with a twin sister and the loud barker who wasn't being very sociable

Where do you do herding?
Thanks for all the warm welcomes! Barney & Maggie...woof to St. Louis. Oh, and more woofs to Pearl, Cosmo, & Heart (Val too)!

Amanda, I had tried to get over to visit your girl. She reminds me SOOO much of my Candy we lost over Memorial Day weekend. The picture with your signature looks just like her! We herd up at Genoa City, Wisconsin...right across the state line by where Rte 12 crosses the border.

Jeanne
Welcome from Southern California! 8)

:ghug: Sorry about the loss of Candy :ghug:

That picture is right after her first at-home shave down. She looked ALOT better than we expected

Izzie has alot of attitude and brought all of it with her on Saturday  Hopefully we get a chance to meet up again and maybe she will behave more sociably 8)
Thanks, Elissa. I hope you're safe from the fires? I worry so much about all the dogs when I hear of these conditions!

Jeanne
Tons of attitude makes Izzie even more like Candy! Drove me crazy dealing with it, but I sure do miss it now!

Let's see, adding pictures....Well...I'm not so sure I can help - people had to help me figure it out and I'm still not so sure I know what I'm doing.

I know you scroll to the bottom, click on OES Photos, upload what you want to add (the hard part being which album to pick!), Ron approves them so it takes a little while before they're available. And then there's a way to add images to your messages once you get that far.

Wiser people will help you, I'm sure.

And, yeah - you "did it right" I just enjoy seeing Loretta here and there. That picture still makes me laugh. Could she be any happier?

Kristine
Jeanne,
We are okay here, no fires near us.....yet!(knock on wood)

Here are the instructions for posting photos:

Welcome Jeanne and crew, sending g'days from the mob downunder. :D

Yep now you have intorduced yourself Tons of photos now :P Especially them herding.
Hey hey! Welcome to the community!
Hi and welcome to the forum
HEY JEANNE!

Ali here, welcome to the group! Missed ya!
Hi Jeanne - Welcome from MN.
I hope to meet you and Neifi in person sometime. :D We were at Genoa City last year, but I have to work this year.
Neifi must not be like Chewie. He is quiet and tired in the vehicle, but then he "toots" and I know he is in fact still there!
Thanks to everyone for the welcomes! Ali...it's been way too long since I fell off the breeder list! How're you doing?

I'm glad for the reminder...Amanda, there's a herding trial this weekend in Genoa City. If you're interested in even just watching herding, it's a great opportunity. Kristine is going to try to be there. I'm going to be in Cancun, so will miss this one. It's both Saturday & Sunday, but there's a fun day with lure coursing and a costume 'competition' after the trial, and we've managed to have quite a few OES take over the place the last couple years. Gotta give those border collies a run for their money SOME HOW!

I have to work in the office today & have my herding lessons tonight, so I'll be quiet now for awhile!

Jeanne
Welcome to the forum Jeanne!

I am also from St. Louis and I have a friend here with a sheepdog who is very interested in herding but doesn't know where to start. I would love to put her in touch with you.

Your avatar pic is awesome by the way!
Yup, Jeanne's right. I'm heading down to Shannon's. I originally wanted to go both days, but will probably only go Saturday because there are two specific classes I want to watch that day and I'm so busy right now. Kathi McBride and her incredible lure-coursing OES, Kodi, may be there on Sunday. Not sure about Sunny and Luca (and Ali) - Sunday, maybe?

Jeanne - I'm taking some of the info you posted to the performance list. Not sure about directions though.

October 27 & 28.

Stocktoberfest is an annual (allbreed - not just OES) herding trial/fun day held in Genoa City, Wisconsin (IL/WI border just south of Lake Geneva).

RLF III (sheep only)*
HTD I, II, & III (Herding Trial Dog) (ducks, sheep, & goats)
HRD I, II, & III (Herding Ranch Dog) (sheep only)*
HTAD I, II, & III (Herding Trial Arena Dog-course 1 for ducks, course 2 for
sheep & goats)
JHD (Junior Herding Dog) sheep & goats
HCT (Herding Capability Test) sheep & goats

The two marked with * are on SATURDAY ONLY. All the rest are both days.

Now for the Fun Day - Sunday
Scheduling is "Immediately after the AHBA Trial" The published estimate is 1:30 pm

--Lure coursing
--Costume class
--Raffle
--Photography (the photographer who does the incredible action shots will be available for posed portraits, etc., if you arrange a time with him)
--Brushed by Bev - "Local watercolor artist Bev Grosse will be on site showing her superb work. She's available for commissions and can paint anoriginal watercolor portrait of your working dog (or other subject) from your photograph. Bev's work is marvelous and not to be missed!"

It's a great way to learn about herding and the fun events on Sunday are a stitch. Hope to see some of you there.

Kristine
We might be interested to go and watch. Is there a ticket price for spectators? What time does it start?
Amanda P wrote:

:D No ticket. It's just a trial - spectators are welcome. Sometimes you even get put to work  It probably starts early morning, 8a.m maybe. Jeanne? And then just till they're through with the classes. You can stop in and watch for however long and short a time you want. If you're aiming of the fun stuff, arriving 11 am'ish on Sunday will give you an opportunity to watch some herding, get some lunch, and then do the lurecoursing etc (no experience necessary). I tried one of my little girls last year for the first time and she thought it was a stitch.

It's all outside (porta-potty land) and it tends to be pretty windy. So dress appropriately (layers unless it's a hot day) and figure it will be cooler there than whereever you're coming from. There is shade and so on.

Jeanne can fill you in with more details when she gets a chance to get back online.

Kristine
Hi Jeanne! I'm Deborah, we met at SheepieFest! I didn't realize you also have Border Collies. No wonder Keira kept an eye on you!!!

It was great to meet you. Hope we can get together again !!!

Welcome!
Take some photos of the Duck Herding Wow. Please, are yours doing that one as well as the sheep?

Seen that only once with a sheepie rounding up the quackers.
Hello and welcome from Colorado.
Stocktoberfest was a lot of fun. And with Simon not there to win Most Humorous Costume again (picture a basset as Mickey Mouse - complete with mouse ears), the field is wide open!! :D :D
Wow! Thank you everyone. I'll try to answer your questions. I'm working from home today, so I should be able to reply, if I've missed any.

The herding trial address is W1192 County Road B, Genoa City, WI 53128. I just checked Mapquest, and it looks right, so use Mapquest for your directions. I had my lessons last night, and she said the entry was disappointing, so if you're considering this, go earlier instead of later. Saturday will be the ranch dog and large flock competitions, which are really more geared toward OES, but I doubt there will be any entered.

I have not worked ducks with my OES...border collies, yes. My OES are just too enthusiastic about herding, and I'm truly afraid they'd squash the ducks. I know there are some who are successful at it, but I find ducks much harder to work when you have marginal control of your dog.

Herding in the St. Louis area is alive and well! The first herding trial I entered was at Purina Farms, and the club that put that trial on is still going strong, but I'll have to hunt for information on them. Since they finally started holding trials in Northern Illinois/Southern Wisconsin, I stopped entering their trials, and have fallen off their mailing list.

Thanks for the compliment on my avatar picture...it was taken by the photographer who will be shooting at the herding trial this weekend.

Jeanne
Welcome, Jeanne & crew, from North Carolina! :D Glad you found us!

Looking forward to lots of pictures & more herding stories!! :P

Dawn, Chewie may take after his uncle. Sunny and I used to carpool to agility classes. About a 45 mile drive each way. I'd pick her and Ali up, and she'd usually bring Luca along for the socialization as a pup. Some times I'd borrow Liz and bring her too. Both of them are world class tooters. Well, actually, they are both of the silent but deadly variety. Sunny and I developed a drill that at the first sign that something might be aromatically "off", we'd quick open our respective windows and hang our heads out there in the wind. Self-defense. Survival, really. You couldn't drive and breathe at the same time. 8O

I think she got it under control when she switched foods. But for a while we were debating having a gas detector installed and having gas masks drop down from the ceiling at the first hint that something was up. If it gets too bad, check with her to see if she still has the plans for this contraption

Kristine
Yep. LeAnne and I do the same window drill.   8O

Oh, lord, I'm so sorry :D :D Then you may want to talk to Sunny about how she went about fixing her little fart, eh, I mean darling puppy. I think it involved Natural Balance and/or less protein. Failing that, we'll have to see about acquiring some gas masks. Sunny and I may have a couple tucked away somewhere

Until Jeanne returns, take a peak at Hilda working ducks. Hilda belongs to Maureen Clark in Minnesota.

Hopefully Jeanne will share more herding pics of her guys once she gets back.

Now, tit for tat, Lisa, I keep meaning to ask you the secret to your girls' white beard! How on earth do you maintan that??? Mine look like pigs ten minutes after a bath!

Kristine & the oinkers
Thanks for that Kristine, wonderful photo of the ducks being worked by Hilda, she looks so great at it too. The one I saw doing it for the first time, instead of the sheep which he worked real well, Kaos and great laughs, his mom went back to the sheep with him after his first & only attempt with the Quackers   :

Tit for tat, will PM you with info
Hi!! It was nice meeting you at the sheepiefest. I am interested inherding as well. I live in Peoria, IL. Do know of any herding going on here? A place to start anyway....
First of all, Welcome from the Hungarians! :D I love this picture of Hilda herding the ducks!!!

Second, I can't believe I missed this topic!!! We had nothing to do this weekend and I would have loved to go to the herding trial. Last time we were on a "border collies only" in NH, which was pretty amazing.

I would love to herd with Boni and would love to know more about it too! We are only staying in Chicago for 4 months and then back to Boston.
You haven't missed it. The fun day is tomorrow. Go back up the topic till you find Jeanne's directions.

Dress warm!!! I was there this morning and it was windy as always. After herding tomorrow there will be lurecoursing and a costume contest. I have tracking tomorrow, so won't be back, but Kathi & Kodi may be. You have to watch that boy lure-course...he's amazing. No OES entered today, unfortunately. There is an OES person there, working. I asked and she wasn't entered today. Forgot to ask about tomorrow. Jeanne's dog(s) tend to be the other OES entries, but she couldn't make it this year.

Kristine & Sybil (YUM! Sheep poop!! :D )

Thanks for the info Kristine but we had to take our Xmas card picture today so there was no way we could have gone. Where can I keep track of herding trials, OES events other then here?
Prof. Boni wrote:

To the best of my knowledge, there is no centralized place to keep track of these events. I'm pretty sure a wider array of events gets mentioned here than anywhere else. We try to share these things on the performance list and have a files section where we upload premiums and flyers and that kind of thing, but it's not public access and typically only covers performance (obed, rally, agility, herding etc) events. I'm trying to come up with a way being able to collect that info so everybody has access, but that still wouldn't cover things like the OES rescue - and other - picnics and so on.

If you're interested in herding events in the greater Chicago area, Jeanne is your best bet. Chicagoland OES Club used to put on an OES herding instinct test/seminar (of sorts) in the fall. Very nice event. Haven't heard that they're doing it this year though. I'll try to find out.

Kristine
Thanks, Kristine. In all the excitement, I forgot to ask about it at Chicagoland Rescue event. Usually someone is there to hand out flyers, but I didn't see anyone. We'd love to have Foz try herding. I'm not sure if he'd be good at it, but I'm sure he'll play with all the sheep :D
Mad Dog wrote:

:lmt: Hmmmm...

Too bad we don't know a way or means of centralizing event data in an easy-to-read and easy-to-use format that requires no registration and has a helpful community to support people.

If only. Sigh.

Yes, it's here, Ron - but it's not easy to find. Want to work on that?

Kristine
Yes. I need to think about the format. Recently I saw a really cool way of keeping track of things locationally, and can be seen with the click of a mouse, and I wonder if it could be implemented for this purpose. I'll ask around.

In the mean time, maybe a special forum category that gets added to, updated and deleted as appropriate?

I need to contact someone with the club and ask. If they don't want to continue, we (OK, I  ) should look into seeing getting it re-instituted. It was/is a great event and I think there is enough people interested in trying their OES with sheep to make it worth-while. Don't want to step on any toes though. I'll find out and report either way.

I had one I could have sworn would have been great at it. Green Bay Packer in sheepdog package. Her mom knew exactly what sheep are for the moment she caught sight of them and still gets on her toes and intense at age ten. My only fear was that the daughter might turn out to be a bit of a wolf. Got there. Nope. Dog with no obedience talent decided to practice heeling with me instead. "YOU herd the sheep! I'll just hang out with you"  Goof!

Mad Dog, whom I assumed would take one look around and say "what??!! No tunnels? No teeter?? What's the point???" approached them the way she approaches everything else, very workman-like. "It's a job. No problem. I'll get it done." Meanwhile her sister was off flirting with the cute border collies...("Hi there, handsome  ") Herd sheep a little, bat eyelashes at border collies. She passed, but really!

And some of them take more than one exposure to turn on to the sheep.

Thanks for the info again. Unfortunately, we are only staying in Chicago until February then moving back to Boston. Though, I would love to do it as soon as we can and always happy to learn about it!

 Ron, when we are back I will ask you the same questions - herding, OES Festivals, etc.! ;)

 :ghug:  Look at the bright side of it, Stacy. Now when you have to come to Boston, you have a place to stay and Foz is more then welcome to join you! (And Steve ;) )
Welcome Jeanne!!!

I would really like to get Luca Instinct tested in the next year or so, so if you hear that Shannon is holding one again, would you be so kind as to forward the info on to me?

Thanks!
Will do, Sunny. I'll try to find out if Chicagoland is going to continue with their testing day or not. You know that you can go to Shannon's for the same test (without an organization's fee) any time. You just set it up directly with her.

Awesome I did not know that. Thanks for the info Jeanne!
I just learned that Shannon is having an all-breed instinct test weekend going on next weekend (November 10 & 11). Times are for both days. There will be a morning group (gate opens at 8 AM, gather at 8:30 for 9:00 clinic) and an afternoon group (gather at 12:30 for 1:00 clinic)

The contact person is Dorothy Schmidt. dotjuschmidt@aol.com or 262-781-8530. She requests no calls after 8 pm.

I've helped Shannon at a lot of her instinct test days, and they are really amazing. You can actually see the light bulbs clicking on when the dogs 'get it'. Your dog will be put on a 6-foot soft rope to go into the pen with Shannon and the stock. She will introduce your dog to the stock and help him/her do their best. Some dogs will need their own people in the pen before they'll work, and if your dog says that...get ready to PARTY with the sheep!

There's a limit of 25 dogs per time period (Sat AM, Sat PM, Sun AM, Sun PM), and they will be filled based on the time your entry is received by Dorothy. This is a GREAT opportunity to see what your dog will do.

The facility is at W1192 Hwy B, Genoa City, Wisconsin. The charge is $40.00 per dog. You really need to get on Dorothy's list if you want your dog tested. If you only want to watch, you're welcome to come, but please leave your dogs at home...it gets too crazy with unentered dogs adding to the commotion.

Is there somewhere else to post this information on the forum?

Jeanne
Thanks, Jeanne!

You could also try posting it to the Sheepdog Clubs and Rescue Org. topics (scroll down and jump to ;-) )

I'll bring the info to the SEWI club meeting tomorrow night as well.

KB
Thanks, Kristine! I'm trying to get the entry form as a file, but haven't received it yet.

Jeanne
