Yarn from sheepie hair

http://www.vipfibers.com/index.html

This site was posted on my knitting forum. I know we have discussed sheepie fur yarn before but I had never seen a site to actually have it done!!!

I may file this away for use with the spring haircut!!!!

This is where I had Maggie McGee IV's last haircut made into yarn. They did a great job spinning even though hair clippings are not the best way to obtain fur for spinning. Start saving undercoat left from brushings or combings and save in an old pillow case or brown paper bag but don't seal in plastic.

It's a bit expensive to have this done but also very labor intensive. I've just started doing my own spinning now and can really appreciate the work that goes into handspun yarn.
Have you done anything with the fiber??
While... out of curiosity, being a guy that would like to have a cardigan sweater (42 oz @ $18.00 per oz) and looking for someone that would knit it for me. I figure it would cost over $1000. Right? I just threw away a 50# food bag of hair from Barney and Maggie that probably weighed about 10-15#. (2 yrs. worth).
When Judi and I where in Frankenmuth we went to this Wool company. They said that they would need at least a 30 lb. bag to make enough yarn to create a sweater. That's a ton of undercoat! I can't imagine how long it would take to pull that much from a sheepie.
Ginny it is the undercoat to collect for spinning. Takes heaps to get enough to spin and make into something.

We had a collective effort from sheepies from across Aus, people collecting and sending in the undercoat to have spun and then knitted into this fundraising teddy made out of the sheepie yarn.

That's jess and the sheepie teddy, so soft and fuzzy. I got outbidded on it darn it

OH DARN!!! I guess I'll never have any then since I keep Tasker clipped!!!!!!!
The store in Frankenmuth MI is Zellwingers. I dropped off 45 lbs of OES brushings, 2 alpaca pelts and 1 bouvier hair to be carded and cleaned and put into rovings for me. Should have them in Dec. or Jan i think they said. they also mix it with other wool there........ when they are carding it. It has to be mixed with something else to properly spin into knitting/weaving fibers.

I am experimenting with pelts now........ what you have when you shave. I am going to try weaving some rag rugs to go down in front of the doors and kitchen sink i think.

I have done sweaters, russian lace shawls, mittens and my favorite are felted slippers and hats. I have many requests for the slippers. i even dye the hair different colors if asked.......

I'll try to import some pictures of things i have done. This is my renewed project for this winter i think..........

That is very cool, Ali. I never saved hair from the last 2, but have been saving Chewie's since day 1. I do plan on having it blended with wool, and perhaps a bit of angora. ( I love the extra sheen and softness the angora gives!)
I haven't tackled a sweater yet, but have knitted scarves, mittens, slippers and hats. I am so close to having a felted bag done!
I have felt an OES - hair scarf - it was great. And my friend has several items made from her Samoyeds' hair - neck warmer, headband, mittens and a hat/face mask. They are super soft and warm. Sammies shed alot more hair, so I will never catch up!
Ali!!! I've always wanted this done and let me know when you are taking orders! I'll be one of the first in line as a potential customer.

I looked into this several years ago when I was fostering little Austin a 4 month old Chihuahua. As he went on all the walks with his BIG brothers, I always thought it would have been fun to have him in a knitted sheepie coat. :D

He's no longer with me but think it would be cool to own something made out of genuine sheepie fur..slippers sound cool! or should I say toasty warm? :D

I didn't plan to make anything "wearable" so I made this teddy bear sweater set: Image

Maggie McGee's hair was from a shavedown so it wasn't as soft as brushed undercoat would be. It wasn't blended with any other fiber so it doesn't have the strength that a blend would have. I had no plans in making anything "wearable" so that was fine with me. Just wanted something to remember Maggie by.
That is adorable. I actually would not want anything "wearable" either, a teddy bear would be PERFECT!!! I love the one in the picture Lisa posted.

OOOOHHHHH, Dawn I want to see that felt purse when you are done that sounds AWESOME, I really like those!

I was trying to save Luca's hair but sadly in the midst of moving things the last few weeks I think the bags was thrown out
