Which anti-virus software?

I finally got my (second-hand from a very reliable friend) laptop set up with wireless Internet. The laptop came with CA anti-virus software which has expired. I've never heard of this brand. Should I renew with them or get Norton?

There is free high quality anti-virus software called AVG available on the web. My brother uses it and likes it.

I'll see if I can find you a link.

...and here it is:

I really hate Norton. It is so slow and screws up so many programs. Whenever I get a new computer, I uninstall any Norton programs that are pre-installed on it.

I love McAfee. If you are a Comcast subscriber, you get McAfee included with your Internet service. Otherwise, you can download it from the McAfee website. Prices vary depending on how many add-on options you choose. It works great and is easy to use.
I have a subscription of CA (Computer Associates) security center, came free with Time Warner Cable.
My neighbor that fixed my computer recommended Avast.
http://www.avast.com/index.html It is a free program, that never expires. I have been impressed with it. I loaded it once I got my computer up and running again(It went down a few weeks ago)
I also reloaded CA security center minus their anti-virus program.
I do like their firewall and anti-spyware program. Their anti-virus program seems really good too, but I decided to stay with what my computer guy recommended for that.

I'm with Valerie on Norton's. It caused major, major problems with my computer. It also caused problems for a good friend of mine. We have both swore off the company. Just updating the program had caused my computer's operating system to become unstable and crash. Also when you delete the program it leaves many files behind that can still reak havoc on your machine. Even with using the Norton's removal tool (which needs to be downloaded to remove more of the program(something they don't tell you!!!)) it still leaves a lot of junk.
I don't like Norton or McAfee.. I use my servers security centre and also run Lavasoft (sometimes you will find that one prog. will not get them all so I always run one then another to be sure)

here are a couple of freebies

Lavasoft is an anti-spyware program, also a good one.
I also use it along with the one from CA as both of them seem to pick up different stuff.
Paula, you definitely want to get a anti-spyare program too.
Spyware will significantly slow down your computer.

I use this an highly recommend it.
I downloaded the free AVG software. Now here is the stoopidest question ever. I was asked if I wanted to run it or save it. I chose save it (as an exe file). Will the software automatically run everytime I use the computer, or do I have to tell it to run??????

Should I delete the old CA software? Every time I boot up, I'm told it has expired and do I want to renew.

I'll deal with anti-spyware later!! What is spyware anyway??????

This is Computers 101 class.
Spyware is bad! It attaches itself to your computer and then makes it run really slow. It is usually done by advertisers on webpages.

Yes you can delete CA. Go to the start menu, then control panel, then add and remove software. Then chose remove the CA program to remove or uninstall.
You will need to do this before you install the new program. It would most likely tell you that anyhow.
You can download the software to the new antivirus program first though.
You'll want to save, not run. Save it to your desktop. Once it is downloaded and the old program removed you can double click it on the desktop to install.
I do recommend disabiling your internet connection before you uninstall CA. Just to be on the safe side.

I'll PM you my phone number in case you need help.
Thanks E. After I saved it, I got the wizard to install it so now it's installed and running. I'll disconnect from the Internet and uninstall CA. Gosh, you guys are great!
Woo hoo! :yay:
