New Addition to the Family

My Shaggy now has a playmate! Snoopy (her new name) is a two (best guess by the vet) year old pure breed (vets best guess as well) Belgian Malinois who was found 10 weeks ago wandering near the Interstate in Tallahassee. Some friends of mine who run a boarding/training operation specializing in Belgians took her in and asked me if I would be interested in adopting a playmate for Shaggy. They boarded her there (as I had mentioned that I was looking for a companion for my Sheepie and they thought that she was a good fit...the other Belgian Rescues are usually sent to a Belgian Rescue Organization) until I was able to evaluate the dog for suitability... and refused to take any compensation for the 10 weeks she spent there and care recieved :D ! She is very well behaved, a little on the thin side (at 48 lbs..she should be about 55 or so they tell me), nicely proportioned, and just an absolute sweetheart. Shaggy and Snoopy have gotten along really nicely and play well together.

Snoopy is adapting quickly to her new surroundings and sticks to me like velcro. I took her around part of the agility course for kicks and giggles at the K-9 school were she was staying, when evaluating her suitabilty, and was impressed with her gentle demeanor, overall appearance (well proportioned and almost buckskin, save the nose and ears which are black, in coloring), athleticism (boy is this dog fast! Like a rocket....I almost named her "Delta Dart" as when she is running, in a secure open area or alerts on something, her ears stand up, tail sticks out, nose is straight forward and the rest is just a "buckskin blur"), and how well she seemed to adapt to and learn from new situations. I realize that there will be quite a learning curve on all of our parts as to both this breed of dog and the two dog dynamic.

For now, we will take it slow and get to know each other well.

Now for the questions. Does anyone have any advice on how I should approach integrating the new dog into this established (well, just my Sheepie and I) household? Also, does anyone have experience with the Belgian Malinois?

Perhaps the best things in life are still free (well, I will have my vet's bill Monday morning when we do another full exam, this time with my primary vet.....Yikes...she is usually very good with rescues and charges at cost). And to top it off, my Sheepie is sleeping on the floor besides the Belgian...guess they are buddies from the start.

Hey congratulations!!!!!! I'm so happy Shaggy has a playmate! I have a friend/mentor who goes to my handling class and does a lot specifically with Malinois so I'll try and get his number for you. He's a great handler and probably would have a lot of tips for you.

Congrats again!
Congrats! Would love to see photos. sue
Congrats!! No experience with a Malinois, but when we adopted Pepsi we had a German Shepherd, Harley (now at the Bridge)
The two of them were best of friends.

Wishing you , Shaggy and Snoopy an easy transition. :D
