Show handling for the non show dog

Last night Clyde and I went with Holly and Gabriel to our first handling class and we had a great time. The class was for me since Clyde is neutered (and undershot like a bulldog among other things!) and won't be showing anywhere but Clyde did awesome and was a natural. He moved great, loved the attention and pretty much stacks himself, he just stops and drops right into how he should stand. I think he could show himself if I could train him to run down and back!

I was really proud of him because, honestly, we don't ever really work with commands at home-- not since puppy class 3 years ago-- and Clyde stepped up every time like we do it all the time. He stood, stopped and stayed on command and didn't budge when the instructor went over him. She even commented how great he was doing for never doing any of this stuff before. In all fairness, I think working with a 3 year old is a tremendous advantage in room full of puppies, too. He winds up looking really focused even when he isn't since he's not so excitable. I kind of felt like I was cheating!

Holly and Gabriel did great, too. For barely 5 months old, little Gabriel was really good. He wasn't a spaz and was as attentive as a pup his age could be. Not to mention, he's adorable so even if he had been a jerk, all would've been forgiven! Next week, I think Holly's bringing the other puppy for me to work with so that's when my skills are going to be tested. Should be a good time!

That sounds like it was so much fun. I bet Clyde was soaking it all up! :) He will be really bummed if you leave him home to take the puppy next week.

Good for you for getting out and doing something different. It will never be wasted knowledge. :D
Definitely sounds like fun! :D
I have been to a few handling classes with my SIL..... well I have met up with her there and watched her dogs. My Niece was always getting in trouble for not paying attention and not keeping the dogs' attention.
Very nice! Just out of curiousity - how long was the class?

I've noticed that our handling class here is at least an hour and Bingley does well with 15-30 minutes - tops. Any more than that and it is a waste of our time!

About an hour. There were 6 dogs there and we took turns and lined up just like you would at a show. Clyde was the only one who wasn't getting really fussy which I attribute mostly to his maturity. (Wow, I never would've though Clyde and mature would be in the same sentence!) Well, I take that back Gabe was good, but tired. The other ones had definitely had enough. It's tough on the young ones.
That sounds like fun. How cool that Clyde was so well behaved and a natural at stacking. Maybe he's been watching dog shows while you're at work. :lmt:
YAY Clyde, great going jill :D . Hmmm next week will be interesting , with a pupper. :lmt:

(psst holly, pass the most active and hyper of the two to jill next week. )

Good boy clyde for your momma, you are training her well.
Jill, I talked to Katie earlier and she requested that you bring Bear on Tuesday :) Jonah will be a big challenge since he's so shy but he pretty much stacks himself so that's a plus :)
Man, you're gonna make me clean him up. He's got a smell that only a mother can love right now and needs some trimming. Well, it'll be good motivation!
Hmmm, fiirst a dog show handling class and then next you'll be addicted. When are you getting your new puppy so you can start entering???
