Does anyone know what is involved in training a dog to be a therapy dog?

Yep! :D
Chewie and Simon are both therapy dogs.
The 1st thing is to go through some obedience classes. That is the basic foundation. Most people go through several sessions. There are some places that have classes geared only toward passing a therapy dog test, but that is not neccessary or required.

There are several organizations - the one I have worked with is Therapy Dogs International. I have been a member for over 20 years, and an evaluator for over 10 yrs. The web site for more info is: www.tdi-dog.org
On the home page - see the right side - "TDI testing requirements". This goes over each of the test exercises. With TDI, the dog must be at least 1 yr old to test. Barkley has a nice friendly personality, so that will be no problem.

There are several others with therapy dogs here, and belong to different organizations. Whatever group you work with - it is a fun and very satisfying thing to do with your dog. :D
