Ringing a bell to go out!

I'm so excited, and I just have to share. I live in a tri-level home, and Dodger's access to the backyard is on the lowest level of our home. We often spend time in the middle level of our home, and were worried that we wouldn't notice Dodger standing at the door, and that he would have an accident. Last week I taught him to ring a bell when he needed to go out, and it's working. I'm just so excited about this!

Congrats! I don't know what I'd do without a bell. Clean up a lot of pee I guess.
congrats dodger. you are a smart one.
The funniest thing has accured in my house regarding bells to let animals out.....One of my Halloween decorations is a scarecrow with bells hanging on him that I have hanging on the front door handle. China. my Aussie. has learned to hit him with her nose, which makes the bells jingle, when she is ready to go through the front door for our walk. Before the scarecrow was hung there, she would just stand and wait while I got Violet and myself ready to go.
okay, we are digressing here.............. where they were great at housebroke.......... since teething they keep 'forgetting'.........
HOW do you teach them to ring the bell????

Ali
It was easier than I had anticipated.

I hung a little bunch of jingle bells from a door handle at nose level and stood by it, armed with good treats and my clicker. When Dodger touched it with his nose, I clicked and gave him a treat. I did this over and over until he was excited to hit the bells. After this when he hit the bells, I clicked, and opened the door. Going outside is kind of new to him, so he happily went. When he came back in, he got his treat. We did this about 10 times, until I thought he started to get it. Ever since then, he rings the bells and then sits at the door until we come let him out.

It's so nice to know that he's understanding that he has to go out to go potty, and that I don't have scratches on the inside of my door! (It's surrounded by rough pine molding, dog scratch marks would happen easily!)
Stella is bell trained... but she sometimes nudges the bells so lightly that we hardly hear it. That's about the ONLY time she is gentle, lol.

I am in the process of bell-training Sampson and Shaggy. Sampson has a habit of ringing the bell (which is on the sliding patio door as I want them to go in the back yard since my front yard is all yellow now), but then he runs to the front door and sits, waiting to go out, lol.

Shaggy has rang the bell once, but I didn't respond quickly enough.... I was sitting on the living room floor and he came over and peed on me. I didn't even realize what he was doing until I saw his leg lifted
i tried to rbell train einy but i gave up whe ni found him sat next to door barking ignoring the bells

hes barked to go out and come back in ever since

einy as the easiest dog to potty train he just always went outside i think i had only a few accidents (maybe 3 or 4 ) but he was ill

other training well thats impossible :)

now if only children where that easy to train

zoe and einy
Bell Training is a really good idea, Chewy is not bell trained he just goes to the door. Would be nice to teach him to ring the bell ( although with him I think I would hear it every 5 mins)

Do you guys have problems with the dogs just ringing the bell ANYTIME they want to go out?

Chewy will act like he wants out to go.....I let him out and then he just stands by the door, until I let him back in. I am all for playing with my buddy but sometimes at 7 am in 30 degree weather I just don't feel like it ya know?
When we got Frank, 2 yrs ago, we had some bells hanging from our front door. When the door opened the bells would ring. Frank trained us about what the bells were really for....going outside!!! He taught us this trick, (he was 4 months old) and has since taught our other two oes to ring the bells when they want out too. They just gently touch the bells with their nose and we know what they want. Sheepies are so smart. If Frank wants a toy that Daphne or Daisy has he will ring the bells to go out and as soon as everybody meets at the door he will turn around and get the toy he wanted. He tricks everybody into getting up so he can steal a toy from the girls. I love watching Frank figure things out. You can see the determined look on his face when he is working out a plan to get what he wants.
I used to have a yorkie with my late oes, and if she wanted something the oes had she would stand at the back door and bark excitedly Katy used to rush out garden to see what was about and yorkie would pinch her toy and run off with it.
Summer is training my hubby she asks to go out back door, hubby opens she has a wee rushes back in for a treat. Trouble is she has now started disappearing out of view and I think she is just after the treat!

Sometimes, but you'll also get to know the look that goes along with a serious bell ringing. When Clyde really wants to go out, he rings and turns and stares. If he's just screwing round, he stands sideways and just keeps nudging the bell until I yell at him to cut it out. Now that they're older, there isn't too much recreational ringing.
