Why did you call your Sheepie what you did?

I love some of the names people have called their Sheepies on here but I just have to ask why did you call your sheepie what you did and do they suit it?

My husband named George, he wanted to have an Old English name for an Old English dog. (the next one will be called Henry! )

Our neighbour said he suited it as George acts like a little old man sometimes!! (sorry to any Georges !!) :? :? 8O

Just wondering how you came up with names and do your sheepies suit them

Panda is short for Pandemonium....if we ever got another one, it would be named Havoc! :D
Violet was a rescue at 9mts and she came with her name. The only thing I did was change the spelling...the original spelling was Vilet. I also decided to keep her original name because she has one blue eye and one brown and the name just fit.

To stay with the theme, but to divert a little:

China, Aussie Shephard, was given that name because her face is white and her eyes are blue and her face just reminded me of the finest china.

Pearl the cat is all white, hence her name.
Ryan named Pepsi. Ryan was 6 yrs old at the time and had never even drank a Pepsi. He had probably heard the name on TV. He said to me, "Mommy, lets name his Pepsi, you can call him Peps if you want too."
Hubby and I agreed that it was an adorable name.
At the time we didn't know what his former name had been. For some reason the shelter did not ask the person turning him in.
We found out a few days after we got him that his name had been Clyde.
Clyde was not very fitting as I pictured a HUGE Clydesdale Horse with that name and Pepsi is a little guy. So we kept his name as Pepsi.

Rags' name was Kylie, at least that is what the woman who claimed to have been her owner from puppyhood told me. (She was not the originally owner..for some reason she had lied to me and I found out that she had her for the most 6 months) I didn't like the name, especially since I was worried she would relate it to her time with that woman, which she obviously was not very well cared for. I found out a few days later that her name had originally been Kai before she had been turned over to woman that had her. I didn't like that name either for her. When I rescued her she was matted to the skin and she looked like a ragamuffin. So we gave her the full name of "Rags to Riches", Rags for short. :D
Chewie - short for Chewbacca in Star Wars. His dad is Shaggy Bear's Skywalker (and call name of Luke). Also, I looked up "Chewie" online and he is described as a hairy, loyal warrier in the Star Wars movies - I thought that fit!
And lastly, I name all my dogs with 2 syllable names for ease of calling commands. If the name doesn't come out of my mouth easily and clearly, it won't work at our house.
Hence, we have : Chewie, Macy, Tater, Riley, Simon, Maggie. The lone exception is little Tazz, and he came with that name and was such a basket case we didn't have the heart to change it! So he becomes Tazzie or Tazzer a lot.
Adopted sheepies usually come with names and so I have always added a middle name:

Tyler became Tyler Joe
Kiera became Kiera Jean
Daisy became Daisy Jane
Topper became Taggart James

Tagg did not respond to his "given" name so with some discussion with Jane at OES Rescue, she agreed that changing his name would not hurt or confuse him. He responds to Taggart and all variations. So it seemed to work. And really, Topper?
Izzie is named after one of our last sheepies. We had trouble thinking of what to name her and still really liked his name. It worked for a girl so that is what we named her.

He was Isadore...Izzy for short. She is Isabella...Izzie for short.
My teen boys named Bosley after the fellow from Charlie's Angels.....

Dixie was originally L'il Deb (from the shelter). I was looking for something to reflect a successful female, who beat all odds....We enjoy country music, so the Dixie Chicks came to mind..
We had an OES named Dudley, Duke of Earl (Earl being our last name) and we wanted to call Dutch ???, Duchess of Earl but couldn't think of a call name and then it got to late so she is now Dutch
I wanted Nanny for Sami but my daughter started calling her Sami and the dog went for that name every TIME, so Sami it became. Blue was easy he has one blue eye.
As a rescue, Mulligan came with his name. We kept it.
He has/had a sister named Madigan.

When we meet people, we tell them he is 5 years old and we've had him for 3 years. He is a rescue and his name is Mulligan, which is kind of appropriate; in golf a "Mulligan" is a do-over and our Mulligan is getting a second chance, too.
Like Vicki, my husband thought that ours had to have an English name, so he came up with Winston. I'm trying to remember his sire's name - "King ___ of ____ Bobtail" or something like that and so we followed suit in his registry but he's always just been Winston to us. I do think it suits him.

Lacy came with her name. When she first got here I didn't think her name suited her but now I guess I've grown accustomed. She seemed more like Daisy or Mamie to me. But we weren't going to go change her name since she comes when we call her and there was no reason to add more change in her life.
We named Nanny after Nana in Peter Pan. Sometimes we call her Nana, sometimes Nanny, sometimes Nanny Bear or Nana Bear or Nana Banana. Ha!

Nana in Peter Pan was the sheepdog who looked over the kids. I think she even had a nanny cap on (in the cartoon). By the time we plan to have kids, Nanny will be about 2, so I hope she'll be just as cute as their little guardian. :)
MY husband named Pearl, because she had a big white "pearly head....so we call her Pearly, Pearl-girl, Pearly-Mae.

MY husband named Cosmo...My FAVORITE cocktail.....so we call him Cozziemo, Cozzi, Cabo (my granddaughter couldn't say CoSmo) and when he is in trouble...COSMOPOLITIAN ANANIA!!!!!! (our last name)

I named Heart...(not really) Ali named her but it fit, cuz of the heart shaped white splash on her back. We call her Hearty, AngleHeart,,,,, and my husband calls her JELLY......
Barney came with the name and since we had named all our other animals after Simpsons characters, Barney fit right in 8)
Maudie was Daisy before our home. I just liked Maudie better.
We tried it on a trial basis& she responds just fine.
I guess if we would have kept Daisy ,she would be crazy Daisy by now!
The name Maudie actually came from a litter of O.E.S that we had at home in the 70's.
Ours have all come to us with their names, and because I just hated to give them yet another big change in their life, we kept them.

Abby is actually: CH Mount Haggin's Abigail Courtney
Spencer was: CH Fuzzy Face's Rolls Royce (call name Spencer)

I really didn't feel like either one fit them all that great

Eggbert, on the other hand....Well, he was young, and we HAD intended to change his name...but when we picked him up at the airport, ONE look at his goofy little fuzzy face, and we just looked at each other and said..."OMG...he is SO an Eggbert!" So "Bert" it was!
My pup was Daisy when she came to us. But hubby picked Summer and as we have had no summer to speak about in the UK she became our Summer. My yorkie is called Tilly, or Chantilly Lace to give her her full name. The song "chantilly lace and a pony tail hanging down a wiggle when etc" was stuck in my head the day we named her.
derby since i got him from a dumpster in ky. daytona since i got her in daytona dolly i rescued named her she was such a doll
Finnigan is named after my grandfather, he was nicknamed Finney by family and friends. I never asked him how he got the name. After he passed, my Great Uncle told me Finney was short for finickey, I never knew how appropriate the name would be!
Max- Both of us liked it and it fit. We started to re-think our decision when my niece started calling him "Maxie Pads" because his feet were so big 8O

We quickly corrected that to 'Maxie PAWS" - :D :D
Lucky - had gone through several names and didn't respond to any of them when we got to the vet's office where he had been in quarantine. Per Alabama's records - Lucky is deceased  He also went straight through our sliding glass door as soon as we got him to the house shattering the glass and came out the other side with a small cut on his nose. Oh My God - how lucky can you get! Hence the name Lucky.

Sam came with his full name from the shelter Samson but we shorten it to Sam.

London was picked up at the shelter and came with no name but Joe wanted to call her Spencer (Yuck!) but since she is an Old English Sheepdog and London is in England.... and I was the one to go and pick her up.... (Otherwise she is known as Miss Thing, Brat Baby, Killer Puppy (all those stuffies))
Monty got called that because part of his pedigree name was Sir Montagu.

Peppa got her name as she was full of Pep as a pup and the boys just started to call her that.

Kelsey came about as her dad was "Ned Kelly" after the famous bushranger here, and it was better then what the sons wanted "Salt " 8O because we had a peppa.

Brie was originally Charlotte (as I loved the book Charlottes Web) and she did not respond to that at all  , so Brie came about & suited her personality like the creamy gooey cheese. She is a softie. :D
Clyde became Clyde the day I laid eyes on him. I had Clive in my head as a boy's name but, not only did Clyde seem more appropriate for him, I figured people would think I was saying "Clyde" when I said "Clive."

Jill (Who is regularly mistaken as "Joe" on the phone)
Sir "Obe" Bear of Evergreen registered name came from his eyes, One Blue Eye or One Brown Eye which ever you like. Sir part came from the Queen of England. When she knights a person they get a Sir in front if their name. The Bear part because he looks like a bear and walks like a bear. Evergreen because that is the town I live in Colorado.
First rescue was Lady Kassidie so we kept kassie yill she passed at 12
Next is Flannigan rescue NOT OES but very red hair and the name fit him
Then came pup Fergie , All 9 pups were from the royal family so we got Fergie, She passed at 6 1/2 month with health issue.
Them and no OES rescue came a girl with no name, found frozen to the ground and tied to a tree. So we named her cinderella (rags to riches)
Now new pup 7 1/2 months is Darcy#2 Guess we all know whom she was named for! Our wounder member Darcy!!! :D :D :D
I hate telling the story of how we named Frank. We were driving home from the breeder's house with our new pup in the car (3.5 hour trip). We were discussing what to name him, we were leaning towards Monk because he was so quiet. We got a call while on the road that my husband's father passed away. His name was Frank.

Rebecca was placed with us at age 5 and that was her name already.

Haggis, for our terrier because we thought it was a good rough & tumble name and thought it worked well with his UK roots.

Nut Nut for our cat. No explanation needed on that one because he's nutty.

Newman was our first OES, and he had bright blue eyes and was named after Paul Newman.
Well lets see....... too many down the road to name but here are some:

Rosie... came from the breeder in the U.K... Briar Rose....
Myrlin (Myrddin) also from the U.K. Was The Enchanter and Myrlin was he
Duncan is Dunk 'n Disorderly because he was a disorderly puppy!
Delilah because she LOVES Tom Jones singing...My My My Delilah (literally)
Checkers has a checkerboard pattern on back
Calypso......... we love Calypso music! and it went with the litter theme.... B'lize (or Believe) When you B'lize...........
Harley got his name since Bob wanted a Harley-Davidson motorcycle sooooo bad and I wanted a OES sooooooo bad.
I was nice enough to compromise, so we got my OES and named him Harley ...lol :D ( I don't know why but Bob did not think that was a fair compromise.. )

When we got Junior we went over a week with no name. Nothing seamed to fit. :lmt:
Then Bob called me from downstairs cause he wanted me to see something the no name puppy was doing and he said " Come see what Harley junior is doing" Bahm it hit me JUNIOR fit perfect . :D

Antoinette
Although I didn't pick Carmella's name....I have always loved it. It fits her to a T. Actually...Carmella was named by her first mommy, Ali. She said Carmella was named after Tony Soprano's wife "Carmella" on the T.V. Show..."The Sopranos". (Am I right Ali)? LOVE THAT SHOW. :D

Andy, my Cocker.....was named after "Raggedy Andy" He was a stray who found my husband at work. His coat was in such bad shape. He looked wild and raggedy....so we thought the name fit him well.
Cute thought for thread.

I blew all my cute names on previous dogs. Since my dogs now come to me "used" they are either their previous name or a modification or some utilitarian names that sound unlike any other dog in the house.
Rufus is named after the character from the Bill & Ted films. When they came out I remember saying to my school friend "Thats what I'm gonna call my old english sheepdog" Phew that was a long time ago and here we are at last!!
I know it means 'red haired' but never mind :D
einstein because hubby says you can get an oes coz i'm not allergic to them but i want to call him ( it has to be a him) einstein after the dog from back to the future .

so off hubby went to get the dog (i was to pregnant with high blood pressure to travel that far) he came home with a very underweight patchy haired 14 week old puppy in a plastic storage box and a towel and said this is einstein and its ok i've fed him we has a mcdonalds on the way home. HE instists einy is my dog but einy thinks other wise

i'd like to say hes really clever but hes not walks into doors, eat really random stuff etc

zoe and einy
my husband named Chief...because that was his rank in the Navy......and he is the Chief
Great post! In the weeks before we picked Oscar up, we considered getting another dog to keep him company, as we'd heard that deaf dogs do better in multiple dog households. We were hoping to get his brother, and we would have named them Felix and Oscar, after "The Odd Couple". Well the breeder kept his littermate, and we named our little cuss Oscar....which turned out to be a self-fulfilling prophecy, as he is quite a piglet!

After some of our friends learned that we named him Oscar, they asked us if we had a thing for Jack Klugman, the actor. Why? Because we named our first sheepie Quincy! Pure coincidence, I assure you.

Laurie and Oscar the Slob
Bingley comes from Pride and Prejudice "Mr. Bingley". We wanted something more uncommon with roots in the UK. . . 8) I love it!!! His registered name is Bizzeeboot's New Frontier. All the pups in the litter were named after casinos!!
Hi, we named Shamu after the killer whale. Hershey was born on valentines day and I kinda like chocolate. The day we picked up Echo his previous names were Elvis & Barney so my stepson Josh re-named him Echo. I love this thread
All my dogs are named after books or characters in books except Panda.... I didn't name her though...

Dancer is out of a book called People Of The Fire

Sky is out of a book called People Of The Earth
(both from a series that began with People Of The Wolf by W.Michael Gear and Kathleen O'Neal Gear)

Bree is out of the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon.

If I ever have another boy oes he will be named Durc, from Clan Of The Cave Bear by Jean Auel.
With the assistance of a forum member poll, we chose Fozzie after Fozzie Bear in the Muppets! We figured that you couldn't have high expectations of a clown :D

Annie came to us at with her name and it was very clear she knew it well. I tend to think it was chosen after the "Annie" movie. It is a cute name, but I don't think it fits her all that well.
I adopted RHeba from a rescue. She came with Rheba (even spelled that way) I wanted to change it but she listened so well, I was afraid that if I changed it, she would be too confused or wouldn't listen to the commands she knew from her previous owner. I don't know exactly what commands he taught her although I do know that he trained her well.

I wanted to change it to McKenzie...for no specific reason...I just like the name. We stuck with Rheba and everyone thinks we named her after Reba McIntyre. Nope...I hate country music and Rheba doesn't have red hair! haha
Maude/Maudie was named before my future husband got her as a high school graduation present. I married him to get her. 8O  And all of my family will agree with that.

Amanda/Mandy was after and English character in a book I liked. My cousin named her daughter Amanda several months later and still doesn't appreciate my saying she named her daughter after my dog! And it's been 30 years.

Bailey, just a name I liked. She is the current boss - unless Bennett puts his foot down.

Riley - for the Life of Riley. My m-i-l wants to come back as one of my spoiled dogs and live the "Life of Riley."

TylersMom, I'll bet "Topper" was chosen in honor of the Cary Grant movie of the same name. It was light entertainment, goofy things always going on - you know, like living with a Sheepie.
Mom of 3 wrote:

Our Riley was named for the same thing!
We chose Merlin's name because the kids love King Arthur tales.....he is Merlin.....Tasia Hills Wizard of Waterdown

Avalon came to us as Darby....I hated the name...she didnt know her name so we chose another King Arthur name....We never bothered to change her registered name...she is Tasia Hills Darby in Denim (i think  )

Faith is a rescue dog....she came with her name and we loved it...

Scarlet.....I chose the name Scarlet....yeah I know the dogs arent red LOL.....she is Lakesongs Rhapsody in Red..... she was MY dog and I have reddish hair...so I just had wanted a bit of me in her name.... I got Scarlet from Stacey :D
Sheesh can't believe I hadn't added to this post yet!

My previous sheepie was named Shaggy. She was a pound dog and as soon as I saw her, the name Shaggy instantly came to mind. Of course everyone would comment about that "shaggy dog".

My previous sheepie boy was originally named Dudley after I adopted him at the pound. (no name was given just a number at the shelter). After I while however he used to respond to Big Dog and so the name stuck.

Imiss both Shaggy and Big Dog who are at the Bridge.

Next came Merlin as an 8 wk old pup who was originally given the name Cartman by his breeder. Never having watched the show I hadn't realized how appropriate that name really was for Merlin.

For years, I performed magic shows and had always wanted a Sheepdog to accompany me in my act as I perform comedy magic and of course a sheepie is a natural comedian. So thus, he had to have a "magic name". Even tho I started bringing Merlin to magic conventions and exposed him to huge crowds from an early age - he just wasn't cut out for show biz. Now I wish I had named him Gilligan. That would have created a bit of a chuckle I think...ah well that's for my next sheepie.

Next came Panda, the rescued dog from Hong Kong. He arrived with the name Robin. I wanted to give him a new name to go with his new life. It was the people on this forum who voted for the name. Panda represents his Asian background and the fact he resembles one.

Marianne
Lovely post

It was a toss up between, Bently (hubbys choice) Max (mitch's choice) and of course I always get my own way, hence Ollie, funny enough his dad is called Oliver.

When it came to choosing his pedigree name, I chose Trecott Shephards Rest, because Ollie was such a cutie and it sounded a peaceful name (ha ha thats a joke now), although now I wish I'd chose Trecott Lord of the Manor - cause Ollie thinks he is the Lord of the Manor !
