Loose stools

I'm beginning to feel like we're not good moms! But I'm sure it is just adapting to an OES.

Ralph is having problems with loose stools. Not necessarily diarrhea, because his BMs earlier in the day are firm, but by evening they're very loose and he doesn't have to go a lot. I've done a search in the forum, but haven't seen this exactly.

We had been feeding Blue Buffalo (what Nancy in Minn. fed) then went to a combo and evenually only Nutro Max Lamb and Rice. We had the problem then, so went back to all Blue Buffalo. Clearly it wasn't the Nutro.

Any suggestions?

It is not uncommon for OES to have various digestive issues. There are lots of issues to consider.

1. Exercise -- sometimes they get loose after they've been running and active

2. Treats - Is there any treat that he is getting during the day that could be disrupting his system?

3. Rest -- Sometimes, when the stomach is messed up, you need to get them on a very bland diet so things can calm down and then they will do fine on regular food. You might try putting him on boiled white rice with a bit of chicken to get him regular and then transitioning slowly back to dog food.

4. Fiber -- You can also try adding a bit of canned pumpkin to his meals and see if that helps (indicating it is a fiber issue).

5. Bug -- some stomach bugs only show up intermittently with loose stools. You might want to have a sample tested by your vet.

6. Other foods -- If none of that helps, consider slowly switching to some other food because trying two brands is not really enough to rule out food as the source. My two do great on Timberwolf. There are also many good brands that make specific foods for sensitive tummies. . .

Good luck!
One thing that comes to mind is that when a dog gets too much food, they can get loose poops. It's simply too much food going through their system and it's not processed/digested properly. Is the amount of food he's eating correct for his size/weight? I guess one reason I'm asking this is because you say this...

He's gone through a several hour fast after his last meal and his stool is fine.

You had mentioned this in a previous post about him throwing up his breakfast...

This week Ralph has thrown up twice while eating his breakfast (2 cups of Blue Buffalo)

So does Ralph get 4 cups of food a day? Now it may be completely appropriate for a high energy dog that is going and going all day long or a dog with a very high metabolism or a low calorie density dog food. Please ask Nancy if the amount of food you're feeding is correct for his size. It might also explain the problem of regurgitating his food.

It's very possible that I'm WAAAAAAY off base... it's just something to checkout before you call yourselves bad mamas.
Oh yeah! Good point -- I forgot about too much food!

But it may not be right!

Between the two of us we might
have the bases covered

Night!
Thanks for your advice. Things are going much better with the stools. We've taken him down to 3 cups of food a day and that has helped a lot. Also fewer poops per day (Yeah!).

Fewer scoops = fewer poops = fewer scoops

Glad to hear things are going well :D
