Hair In Eyes

So my sheepie is 6 months old. I always pictured him having long hair as the beautiful sheepies on pet shows. The hair has started to grow in around his face and is covering his eyes. My neighbor has made me feel terrible about this and has me second guessing if I should cut the hair around his eyes. But then he won't look like a "traditional" sheepie (for lack of a better term). So what's the deal, can they see okay with long hair? Is it mean to do that? Should the hair be trimmed?? I don't want to be mean to my dog for aesthetic reasons, but is it really that bad?

If you want to keep the hair long, but allow him to see really well, you just need to use clips or hair bands! :D It may take a while for it to grow to the point where this is possible though :? We trim ours, but thats because we aren't planning to show, and are not patient enough to do a great job with the hair bands
Can you see with hair in front of your eyes?

You have options though. You could tie it up in a hairband, put it up in a barette or you could trim right between the eyes.
If you dog is not a show dog there is absolutely no reason why you couldn't cut the hair. Take a look around the forum. The majority of our Sheepies are in a shorter cut....with eyes.
Personally, I like to see my dogs eyes, they are very expressive.
With my female, when her hair grows over her eyes she gets VERY nasty because she can't see, so I always keep her eye hair short. I have tried putting her hair up but she always pulls out the hairbands or barettes.

EDIT: Was typing this while ravenmoonart
was writing her reply, so it overlaps a bit.
Toppy knot, clip to keep it out of the eyes or trim it off.

I can see woo hoo

Oooooh... she's such a pretty sheepie Lisa!

Yup... either cut it or put it in a top knot.
Sheepies need to see where they're going
or they risk injury.
If you like the hair hanging over the eyse you can just thin the fur out with thinning shears. That way it will still be long and shaggy and look like the typical sheepie, but he will be able to see better.
My mother raised sheepies before we got Dodger and warned me to start getting him used to a "top knot" if we wanted his hair long. She did not do this with hers, and it resulted in her first dog having a few scars on her head from running into things.

Keeping them shorter or in hair ties seems like a better solution to me.
Good advise from the above. What I have also done with Violet is I have parted her hair down the middle on her head and so that half is brushed to the left and the other half is brushed to the right side.....it now stays that way and usually does not go in her eyes.
I cut Obe's hair short once and will never do it again. It is finally getting back to top knot length. Until now I have just used a hair clip to pen it so he could see. I personally think it looks much better long than short but to each there own. I dont show Obe but want him to look like a sheepie.
