How to handle this?

Since having our oes, my children's friends won't come over (it's ok with me) because they are scared of dogs but we are having company over tomorrow with their children and I want it to go smooth. Should I tell them when they arrive, to ignore our dog or do I put Brutus in his crate, if I do he will bark constantly. We still have the jumping on people problem and he nips when he wants to play. If I put him outside, he will stcrach the patio door because he loves being around us.

Any tips you guys have to help me ? I'm having a panick attack just thinking about it !

It will be very difficult to go from avoiding visitors to well behaved in one day. My suggestion is to leave him in the crate till your guests have arrived and things have "settled down", then let him out for a short period to see how he does. If he cannot calm down you will need to re-crate or put him outside.
Kat005 are you sure you do not have my Sami :?:  She does the same thing. And my daughter friends do not want to come over(HAPPY DANCE) My sons friends do not mind. Sami does calm down within 5 mins now. Before  She is a year now. I have gotten those bones with holes in the middle and put peanut butter in it. And she takes off with it after that she is not to bad. I know if we put he out she will bark and caring on out there. We do not crate. I have also down the gentle leader on her and have her sit and be nice and if she wants to jumb I give a fast tug/no and again she calms down (we do not have to do that to much but it did work)
I totally agree with Ginny....Unfortunately, until he can be around people and be well behaved, it would be best for you to keep him out of the "mix".

When Pearl, first came to us, she was very jumpy and intrusive so we kept her in our bedroom when we had guests. After a couple of classes, she was able to 'come out' at the end of our get togethers, when most of the guests left. Now, she can be out the whole time..she is generally on her tuffet, until someone calls her. Then right back on after they are done petting.
If being in the crate drives him crazy, you can always try to use the lead/leash in the house so he feels as though he is a part fo the family although within some control....maybe
I use the dogs to my advantage. It keeps visitors away.
Can you find a doggie day care, or boarding kennel to take him for the time period of the party?

THEN.....you need to start working on training him to calm down when people visit, so that the next party wont be a problem!

Try "role playing" visits by asking friends (who are comfortable with the idea) to come by frequently, so you can work on it. We have found that having (cooperative) guests come over and totally IGNORE the dogs till they calm down, then requiring them to sit quietly before they get pets, helps tremendously.
Thank you , I knew I would find help. I bought a Halti tonight what a différence when I bring him for a walk.
I will keep you posted on how the evening will go !

I like this :D
Our visitors seem to be infrequent as well except for Grandma. This thread just got me thinking about when I was a kid. I had a ton of friends over and noone ever seemed to be scared of our sheepdog. Times have changed, eh??? People are so much more frightened now.

On the rare occasion we do have company, Steve tries to have them on a leash for greeting. Depending on the person who is over, we keep the dogs in the lower level of the house or upstairs in the hallway so they can see everyone. They do bark, but kids whine too :D

This struck me too....what kind of KID is scared/bothered by a big fluffy, over-friendly sheepdog??? :? As a kid, I would have been over there all the time!
THis reminds me of when we went to GA. THe one motel we stayed at, one of the cleaning ladies was terrified of Beauf. Everyone else was gaga. I think people have bad experiences with a dog and just associate it with all dogs. I have a thing about tiny dogs like those little chiuawas or how ever you spell it. My neighbor used to have two and they would bite my ankles when I walked by. THen we moved here and the same thing happened the neighbors had the same type of dogs and they did the same exact thing. I have this thing I dont like being bitten by a little poop of a dog. LOL I have a problem with all small dogs now and dont like being around them.
I find myself trying to protect my ankles
First I have to say that after 17 years of marriage, I can finally call myself a pretty darn good cook !!! :go: I didn't burn anything and it tasted great HAHAHA! Then there's my Brutus ! he loves children !

When my company arrived I had put him outside with a HUGE bone, so it kept him busy for a while...then he wanted to be with us so I let him in with a leash, that went well. I have an entrance that is close to the kitchen table, we put him in there so he could see us through the french doors. All that said it went quite well.

Thank you again guys!

Sonia aka the new Martha Stewart :excited:
The kids here are not scared of them they are girlllssss and they do not want the hugs and kisses and sheepies wanting to sit on them for hugs and lovinggg. Boys now they like them to much gets them going real good and then they leave  But not having 15 year olds around is great, quite, food in the house and no one asking for a drive, yup I like it.

That's why we call them puntables!!!
I totally agree w/ the leash in the house deal. With most people, she calms right away, but when the Grandparents arrive...........................
Maudie is excited to the point where she could knock them over.
About a mo. ago, she visited about 100 nursing home residents & she was an angel.
Who knows what goes on in her brain?
