I messed up 0ur dinner

YUCK I was trying a new way to prepare fish. It had a crushed pecan/breadcrumbs crust. Well as I was cooking it I could smell a odd smell from the fish. When my husband came home he said he could smell it outside. HUMMMMMM not a bad smell though just different.

Well I had not gotten just pecans they were glazed ones. The taste was just ok but very sweet  not our thing. We ate some but left most. I have to read the lable's better and not rush. Maybe next time I will use walnuts.

It was funny though because I am a good cook and don't screw up often.
Oh well :lmt:

It happens to the best of us. :D
I made some Tilapea (sp?) a few months back.
Everyone told it wouldn't taste fishy. The fish came in frozen filets.
I followed someones recipe on here. It turned out horrible (not the recipe, but the fish), it was so fishy I couldn't even eat it.

Last month I tried Tilapea at a restaurant and it was delicious.
Maybe I need to buy it fresh.

My last cooking disaster was many many year ago. But it was totally my fault..... I spilled seasonings (on accident) into a batch of Spaghetti Sauce I was making. It was totally ruined. I was so upset I cried.
thats the fish I used Tilapia, I always have good luck by cooking in light oil and a pat of butter, lightly breaded, season with lemon pepper and dill. It cooks VERY fast. I always use frozen fish in sealed packs . Try it. :D
E- I think you must have gotten a bad batch of Tilapia, or a mislabeled one. Tilapia is a very mild white flesh fish- in fact it was the only kind I could eat while pregnant with Nate, becuase it wasn't fishy smelling. (Tuna and anything else sent me running for cover!) maybe it was over the hill before they froze it? EEWWWW!!!

OES mommy- sorry about the glazed pecans... I've gotta imagine that would be fairly awful. I love tilapia with nuts- I just made it on Sunday actually! I crush walnuts, roast them in olive oil on a skillet over low heat (otherwise they burn) Then you remove the walnuts- drain them on paper towel, and skillet fry the tilapia in the remaning olive oil. I just use a standard flour, salt and pepper breading with a little thyme thrown in. Once the fish are fried, you just sprinkle the walnuts on top of the fillets.

It is one of my favorite dinners. YUMMY!!! Plus, any walnuts you don't eat with the fish make a good snack. Mmm... roasted nuts. Doesn't get more perfect for fall then that! And the olive oil isn't all that bad for you!

Good luck next time
A little off topic, but... Irisk, did you hear on the news that they now officially RECOMMEND you eat tuna and other fishes more than 2 times a week?

Was on the Today Show but my baby board mommies reported hearing it on their nightly news too.

Apparently after every study they did, kids all showed a lower IQ, behavioral problems, etc due to the lack of fatty acid that fish contains. They also said something about the low amount of mercury in tuna, etc doesn't affect mommies as much as the risks of not eating enough (or getting it from fish oil, etc).

They did say to stay away from the high mercury fish like shark and a few others... they were all fish I don't see on any menu at the restaurants I go to, so I don't remember.
What about the mercury levels in swordfish?
I can't remember. There were only like 5 to avoid.

BTW, this was for pregnant ladies if anyone reading is wondering.
Swordfish was one to avoid.

They said things like salmon were really good to eat. I think it said not to eat too much canned tuna, though, but more than what had been being recommended...

Tilapia is horrible......frozen. I'm not wild about it fresh either. Maybe it is knowing how they are raised and what they eat....thanks to Mike Rowe's "Dirty Jobs" TV show.

Of all the meats, my worst disasters are with fish. They are so delicate.
Here's something for Thanksgiving:

1 16 lb. turkey, hen or tom, doesn't matter

1 bag stuffing of choice

1 cup unpopped popcorn

1 stick real butter, melted but cooled slightly.

Salt and pepper, sage and any other seasonings you desire.

Mix stuffing, popcorn, butter and seasonings. Stuff bird and truss up. Put into oven tail first at 350 degrees. When bird starts popping, blows the oven door open and flies across the room, it's ready.

I cook A LOT of fish. I eat fish at least 3 times a week. Tilapia is one of my favorites.

After a couple times getting stinky fish...I learned to only buy fresh, and to smell the fish before I buy it.

The fishmonger at the store should not mind you asking to smell it.

Fresh fish should not smell like "fish". It really shouldn't smell like anything. If it does, try a different type of fish that day, and do not buy the smelly fish. Honest, the fishmonger won't be pissed off. S/he'll understand.

And I never buy fish more than 1 day in advance of cooking it. I prefer to cook it the same day I buy it.

Ron, only avoid it if you are pregnant...do you have an announcement you'd like to make?
OHG 8O

Ron's knocked up! Good work, Joan!
If it is too dangerous for pregnant women, why is my saftey any less important?
Ron is pregnant?! 8O Does that mean swelling hairy belly pictures?
Oh, so that's why!

I don't think it's the woman's safety but that of the fetus. You can take a little mercury but a little mercury in a fetus goes a long way.

As you are not a fetus, I don't think you'll have any worries about your safety. ;)

But what about the safety of his unborn child?
What if his unborn child IS a swordfish? Blows your mind, huh?
Y'all are crazy!!! "HIS" baby is a tadpole!
I just have to say....This thread is a great example of why I try to make sure to check EVERY topic now and again, even if its a subject that I have no interest in......Ya NEVER know when they might turn into good entertainment!

Delivery could be interesting..........
In that case I'd think that the conception would have been more interesting...?

I'm just saying that no amount of mercury is good for someone; if the levels are dangerous for a baby in a certain species of fish, then that's a fish I don't want to be eating very often.
what ever happened to my bad cooking? LOL  This post has sure gt a
360 degree turn. LOL So so you guys are having fun.

Its had several! From "bad cooking moment" .....to fish recipes....to mercury danger......to Ron's tabloid pregnancy!
While I agree that mercury isn't good for people, I don't think in smaller amounts it's bad for the average person to have the fish every once in a while. I mean, pregnant people aren't supposed to eat deli meat or soft cheeses...foods that are totally fine for most people to eat. I think it's probably fine for pregnant people to even eat fish with mercury in moderation...it just has an amplified effect on the developing kid.

Oh, we knew it was a freak accident, we just wanted an excuse to razz Ron.

Like you, Ron, I love swordfish. Fortunately the price keeps me from plunging into the mercury laden pool very often, sigh.

Exactly. It's kind of akin to dosing instructions for things like medication for children and adults. A few motrin is no big deal for an adult but you wouldn't give that to a newborn!
