I smelled fish....YUCK

Yesterday my sister and I were sitting on the couch and Edgar started chewing on his butt. Then came a smell...... 8O Like a bad fishy smell. We are gagging and my husband didn't believe us. Then he walked over to the area the smell was done in. Now he believes me.

So I am thinking that Edgar baby needs his anal glands expressed again. Now I am not one of you professional dog lovers that straps on rubber gloves and dons on eye protective wear and does it themselves. NO WAY! Last time I brought him into the vet it cost me 67.59 dollars for the exam and expression. This time 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) I am bringing him into PetSmart and they are going to give him a bath, pluck his ears, and express his glands all for $38.99. I am so happy!

On the other hand the vet will still get some money as we are going to try a special food (63 dollars for 38 lbs) to see if it will help his itching. I've tried flax seed oil and The Missing Link supplement. No help. Still the licking of his front two paws and the bitting on his butt.

I with you on that one, let someone else do it. :?

I have only had it done one time on one of mine when young, the vet earned his money that day and I have no regrets paying for it. (pssst I actually left the room and the vet to it. PHEW) 8O
emu oil is great for itching anything. google it and they even have shampoo for dogs. It does work.
I hope it's the anal glands causing the problem.

That biting the butt is Yuki's specialty. As well as the fish smell. No matter how many times the vets SWEAR that is the problem... when they take an internal look, it NEVER is. Her anal glands always look nice and empty.

Good luck!!!! Fish is absolutely awful to smell.
Let us know if the food helps. I am switching over to Canidae now as Nigel seems to be a little allergic. Itchy ears...head shaking, and still has dry patches under his arms. It's supposed to be really good for allergy sufferes.
I should try the emu oil as it seems everything else I try doesn't work. It is so frustrating not being able to find out what is making him itch. Maybe this new food will work wonders. :plead:

Why couldn't I have got a dog with easy to figure out problems. Grrrrrrr!
You could also try the Malaseb medicated shampoo, made for dogs with allergie problems.

Hopefully that and a change in his food will help it all settle down, wishing you all the best there and keeping fingers crossed.

Emu oil is an aussie product from a native bird here and I am actually myself allergic to it.
Both my dogs express their own anal glands by licking their butts. Once they lick and are expressed they stop licking or chewing. It is a gross smell but at least you know that the anals are normal if you are smelling that. If it starts to smell a lot worse or comes out thick then you know you've got an anal gland infection or something else going on and they may need to be infused with something so I am happy that it is the "normal smell".
