hip dysplasia study - dysplastic OES participants needed

My vet (OES breeder) asked me to post this. She's been working with Dana and they desperately need more submissions of x-rays and blood from moderately to severely dysplastic OES. Though it says it requires a three generation pedigree, even if your dog's is unknown but is otherwise qualified and you'd like to help, please contact Dana. The little dysplastic rescue puppy, Rupert, whom a few of you have met, is participating and we don't have a pedigree on him.

Thanks!

Kristine

Ostrander Hip Dysplasia Study
Participants Wanted!

As some of you may know, the Old English Sheepdog has been chosen to participate in a research study being conducted by the Ostrander Lab to locate the genes for hip dysplasia.

Participation in this study requires a blood sample, 3 generation pedigree, and a copy of your dog's Hip x-rays. If OFA has the copy of your dog's hip x-rays, then a consent for release of the x-rays will need to be signed.

If you have any questions, need to sign a consent form, need supplies for drawing blood samples, or to further discuss the study, please contact:

Here is a question about HD. If both parents were OFA tested and their hips were good, then Obe has a good chance of NOT developing HD? This is not a guarantee correct? He could still develope HD? Hope this makes sense it is early in the morning.

Yes, you are correct. It is likely that Obe has good hips but it is not a guarantee.

The reason there is so much research being done right is to try and figure out how HD manifests in the breed. It does pop up every now and again in lines that have great hips, although the chances seem to be lower.
Panda has moderate hip dysplasia in both hips. He's a puppy mill dog from Hong Kong.
What's so noticable to everyone is also his coat texture..so different from Merlin who was from a reputable breeder. Anyhow going off topic here.

Thanks for posting this info, sadly I won't be able to participate as drawing a blood sample from Panda would mean the loss of fingers.

Sorry! Shouldn't laugh.

Although the study IS important, it's not worth losing body parts over, no.
