Whats your doggie bedtime ritual ??

I was wondering this the other day and I'm sure we all have some kind of ritual with our dogs before bedtime ?

Mine is to get Ollie out of the lounge, "come on Ollie bedtime sweetheart" Ollie pretends not to hear me and also thinks he is invisible. Jack on the other hand, its straight on his bed in the utility room. So I drag Ollie to his bed, to which he refuses to lie down on. Give them food (my dogs are weird, only eat at night ?) and plenty of water and settle them down, tell Ollie I love him and to be a good boy, stroke his head and kiss the bridge of his nose (about 50 times) and give him a big cuddle, then do the same to Jack. I always give them a little wave goodnight and tell them I'll see you in the morning poppets :hearts:

Since Heart :hearts: is still at the "hoping she holds it till the morning" stage, I take the water up at about 7-8--She gets a good play session outside with Pearl and Coz, THEN comes in and plays with her 42 toys.

At about 11, when she is finally (a little) tired out, I pick up my 30- something pound puppy, (cuz she won't get up), cuddle her, snuggle her, kiss her, and put her by the door of her crate, she waddles in, goes to the back of the crate, slinks down, and falls asleep.

I see the look of relief on Pearl and Cosmo's faces, (whew! she's finally out of our hair!!!)..

We (Pearl Cos and me) tiptoe to the bedroom.............very quietly......as NOT to disturb, Princess Heart :hearts: ........................

(Ron.love the new emoticon!!!!  )
When it is bedtime....I stand up and say "time to go to bed" and the both of them follow me into the bedroom. They both then line up on their Daddy's side of the bed and wait to see what snack daddy is going to share with them...they are never disappointed, :D lol.
He knows the ritual I guess. Brush my teeth, he follows me, check on my daughters, he follows me, check on my son, he follows me then I go to bed and he plops down and sleeps. He's like a shadow
Not much ritual here. I say "Bedtime" They go in the kitchen and lay down. When I'm ready to hit the sack I walk into the kitchen and give them each a pat on the head and tell them they are the greatest guys in the world.

Talk about ritual. During the day if I have to go to the bathroom I say "I've got to go potty" They both stop what they're doing and escort me to the bathroom. :D
George goes into the garden.

Comes back in, I go upstairs he follows me up while Bob puts the alarm on.

George peers round the top of the stairs at Bob to wait for a biscuit. He gets a biscuit then he lies down in the bedroom/bathroom/ landing where-ever is cool.

When we are ready to go to bed after cleaning teeth etc he gets another biscuit and that is when he SHOULD go to sleep.

However he has started to pad about and want to go back downstairs (which is cause he stayed outside during the summer until about 4am when he howled to be back in) He comes to my side of the bed and nudges me in the sheepie gentle way  until I let him back downstairs where he has another look around the garden and comes back upstairs where he lives in hope of another biscuit!!
Awww...good thread. It's all so sweet.

I say to the wigglebums, who are usually on the sofa, one on each side of me, by this time, "outside?". And they pop up & race to the backdoor for last outs. Out we go to potty and while they're doing their business, I'm busy filling their kongs with cream cheese.

I open the back door and say "Let's go to bed" and they run in and head straight to their room, go into their crates and turn around to face me so they can get their yummy kongs. I lean down & give them their kongs, kiss them on the nose, tell them I love them, close the crate doors and then say "Goodnight my loves, I'll see you in the morning. Sleep tight."
When its time for bed Sami runs right in for an 1/2 snuggle and then she is on the floor. Blue now he loves it out side and usually sleeping on the deck, and I have to TRY real hard to get him in, usually a treat, then turn off the doggy door so he can not go back out. Then he usually has a 2 minute snug and off to the bathroom floor, that is the spot he picked for himself. He is not yet a snuggle bug and I do hope that changes.
Nothing to exciting here, I just say bedtime Dutch, give a few kisses and a hug or two and when I go into the bedroom she just comes and lays across the door :)
We usually turn the TV off around 10PM. Bailey gets up from wherever he's been napping and races to the back door for his last trip outside. It doesn't matter whether he needs to go out or not - he insists. We say that Bailey needs to patrol the perimeter before we all go to bed. Once he comes back in, we make sure he has water, then we all go upstairs (with Bailey in the lead). During the summer he sleeps in our bathroom on the tile floor, in the winter he might sleep on his doggie bed which is next to our bed. If we have visitors, or if I'm out of town, he sleeps either at the bottom or top of the stairs so he can keep his eye on everything and greet me just in case I walk in the door.

Bailey's morning ritual is funnier. Tim gets up first in the morning and takes Bailey for a walk before he leaves for work. So on weekends, Bailey waits until about 7AM, then starts dancing around the bed to wake Tim up. He won't bark, but he makes his "huffing" noises and dances from one side of the bed to the other. He knows that it's walk time and his Dad is not allowed to slack!
I normally go to bed at 10 p.m., so at 9:59 p.m., Oscar is staring at me. And I mean staring. 8O He does not like it when I stay up to 10:01. :) Then I do the sign for "bedtime" (tilt my head to the right and lay my head in my right hand), and Oscar jumps up, follows me to his kibble jar, and races me into the bedroom, where he is waiting......and droooooooling.

I throw the kibble on the floor, and close Oscar in the master bedroom with me. Then I go in the master bath and fill his water bowl. He drinks and then crashes out over the air conditioning vent, and I go to bed. Sweet dreams my little tweetie pie!

Laurie and Oscar
Wally goes to sleep whenever and wherever he wants- doesn't matter what anyone else is doin!
Rags and Lacey get annoyed if I stay up to late and they go into the bedroom without me. Rags is famous for getting up, stretching then giving me the evil eye for not being in bed yet.  Recently Lacey has decided to sleep in Ryan's room until last call. Then she comes and joins us.
Pepsi on the other hand will not go to bed without Mommy. If I am up really late he usually falls asleep in the front hall and doesn't even wake up when I tell him it's time for bed. He does eventually end up in the bedroom once he realizes I am not in the living room anymore.

We have a last call between 10:30 and 11:00 pm. For this trip outside I accompany them to make sure they actually go and are not just playing.
I fill up the big water bowl about halfway.
We get into the bedroom. I perform my nightly ritual, washing face, brushing teeth....etc If Hubby is not in bed yet all 3 dogs will come up for a cuddle session. Then Lacey will jump down to her bed and curl up. Rags will hang out on Daddy's side of the bed until he comes in. Or if he is already there she curls up on the floor next to his side of the bed. Pepsi usually starts out asleep by my feet on the bed or next to me.
As soon as I close my laptop, the boys are halfway up the stairs. On the rare occasion that I'm not on the computer, I get up say "Let's go" and, again, they're fighting to see who can get up the stairs first. If I don't go fast enough they both stand at the top of the stairs until I get there and, usually, Bear will take a swing at me with his paw as punishment. He believes in tough love.

This is EXACTLY what Barney does. Except I'm the unlucky person it's directed at! Doesn't he know I need my beauty sleep?!

Bedtime:
We're usually watching tv and Barney is lying against the couch. He'll stay there as long as we do--he has no 'bedtime' in his head. We get up and he seems to know, though, that we're not just getting up for a different reason. He usually races up the stairs and waits at the bedroom door, dashes inside, chases the cats for a few minutes, then turns 3 times, makes a few huffing noises and plops down on the floor by my husband's side (unless he's not home, then he goes to my side)
Mommy has more of a ritual than the dogs who don't officially conk out until Daddy goes to bed :D Fozzie usually does whatever Mom does. We sit on the couch or play until it's time for my bedtime. I say that I'm getting ready for bed, then go into our bedroom and close the gate before washing up. Fozzie stands outside the gate for a moment to ensure I'm not coming back out immediately. When I don't come back out, he takes it as an indication that it's time for him to lay in the bathroom and "pretend" to be asleep. Annie lays in the hallway near the front door to ensure she doesn't miss anyone's movement.

When Steve comes up to wash, Annie joins Fozzie in the bathroom. Mom comes back out bends down to kiss noses, pet and say she loves each baby. Then it's last call out back with Steve. Foz hops up right away as if he was never pretending to sleep and Annie pretends she can't move. The minute one of us says "treat", she hops up and runs downstairs. I'm sure this ritual will change as she ages and can no longer do the stairs.
What a fun thread! :D

Several "rules" our sheepie have enforced:
1-Its not bedtime until EVERYONE goes to bed (they will impatiently sit up with any night owl, whether family or guest  )
2-Mommy and Daddy must submit to a though licking before being allowed to go to sleep (this is an Eggbert thing....morning too  )
3-Everyone MUST sleep in their assigned spot...Abby at the foot of the bed, Eggbert on his dog bed by the sliding glass door. Any deviation from this will result in the other dog coming over to bite you (luckily, this is a dog-only rule...although Ive never TRIED stealing Abby's sleep-spot :lmt: )

When its time to go to bed (midnight, usually....part of MY ritual involves watching Jay Leno, then Craig Furgusen late shows  ) I say: "Bedtime for Bobtails!" and both RUN for the stairs at top speed.
Oh, I love reading this thread! It's nice to see the similar bedtime rituals.

Well, I talk to the boys in Hungarian so they understand "Let's go outside" in English and Hungarian. They run to the door and back to us and back to the door, etc. until hubby gets to the door and they go out for the last time before bed. While they are out, I go get ready for bed and if they still catch me in the bathroom, both of them come check me out then Lumpi goes lies down on the bed, Boni lies next to the toilet.

Then hubby comes to the bedroom, (I go to bed) and he brings their "Nite-nite B's". If he forgets it, they make sure he gets up and brings it to them. Especially Boni, he is not happy if he doesn't get his "B" (biscuit). After that, Boni goes to the bathroom, Lumpi comes to bed and curls up in between my legs...he likes to put his head on my butt.

The last thing I do is put a pillow next to the bed on my side because sometimes in the middle of the night Boni comes and lies next to me on the floor and of course his head is on the pillow. :D
I call the dogs to the side door for last potty duty. Dixie races out, but Bosley stops in the kitchen then tries to run away, as he is afraid of the dark, or the bunnies, or whatever...at night.. I have to literally push him out the door, and then watch to see if he joins Dixie. If he doesn't then I have to go outside with him, and send him to "go pee", while he looks frantically around him, while peeing, looking for the goblins

Then they race upstairs, and jump on the bed, to give Don night-time kisses. (Don goes to bed an hour before me and the pups). I try to find a corner on the bed, to watch TV a bit.

Bosley normally decides to jump off, as it is too hot for him. He slumps onto the bathroom floor with a thud and a sigh.

Dixie stays up to snuggle and watches TV with me in bed until we doze off. Then she will jump off the bed and go sleep in the closet. She likes her small spaces..
Tinker will sleep all the time anywhere. But Annie lays on the sofa until she is sure that it is time to go to bed. Then she must go outside and pee. If I have to delay after that, she has to go out again. Then to bed where I have to help her up. She has problems with the height of my bed.
I too love this thread and am adding all of my sheepdogs rituals because they were so different:

Muffy (childhood sheepdog) would race up the stairs when the last person went up to bed. She would do this even from a sound sleep in her spot in the hallway. Of course we would try to sneak upstairs just to see if we could do it without her knowing - and we never could. Her spot was in my parents bathroom. She also never slept in and would wake up whoever was in charge to get up at the usual time even if it was a petsitter!

Mopsy (previous sheepdog and the official night owl) stayed up until Tim or I went to bed, no matter how late and once in a while stayed up with the boys. But if she was in a sound sleep she would not come to bed even if you told her it was bedtime. Since I did not trust her to do something bad in the middle of the night - like eat a receipt at 2 in the morning (yes that happened) - we made her come to bed and shut the door to our bedroom. We started getting her a treat to make her come to bed. So then she would run down the hall the minute she heard the treat jar and wait for you to show up. My favorite part was that she would peak out the bedroom door to make sure you were coming down the hall - with her treat!

Harry (current sheepdog) goes to bed when I go to bed. He is a mama's boy all the way! If he even sees the beginnings of what he thinks is me going to bed he is down the hall in a flash. He would prefer to go to bed early and on the rare occasion when he is really tired he has gone to bed by himself. As my son Jack says it's like "he can't take it anymore and he is just going to bed" Finally Harry likes to get silly sometimes to help him roll over so he can sleep.

It is threads like this that bring back the sweet memories of my sheepies past and I can't help but smile thinking about their little quirks. :hearts:

Muffy (childhood sheepdog) :

My childhood sheepdog was also a "Muffin". Oh how I loved and miss her to this day. She was such a sweetie pie princess. People laughed at her name as it sounds like a little dog.
hahaha..i also grew up with a muffy...a golden retriever....

any way, pandas ritual is to do a last potty call and perimeter check...and while she is doing htat im grabbing her bed and baby, carrying it into our room and undoing hte bed....i go get her and she races into the bedroom and sits on her bed...

we have a goodnight kiss ritual...left ear, right ear, left ear, right ear, bridge of nose, each side of nose and then all over again...i say nigh-nigh time and she takes her baby twirls a few times on her bed and falls asleep sucking her baby........
These stories are just soooo precious :hearts:
