Memories of Hitch

Was just thinking of our GSD Hitchhiker and thought you might be interested in how we came together..

Son and I were driving home about noon on a xmas eve when we came across 3 GSD puppies in the middle of a busy road. Son stopped his truck with flashers going, told me to get out and gather up the puppies while he went to the other lane and stopped traffic from that direction, . After we got them into the truck we went to a few homes and inquired if they belonged there, no one seemed to know who they were so we took them home. He went back to the area and finally found were they belonged. The owners felt that someone had been trying to steal them as there was 9 puppies and their mom in a lovely large wooden cage in a quonset hut behind a 6 foot wire fence. they were able to recover the mother and 6 of them . the lady phoned her hubby to tell him we were bringing the lost 3 back to them and he said it was so unusual to find honest people that if we would like to have one we could have our pick. Of the 3 one was male and 2 were female and as Keith and I were leaving to take them back my hubby jokingly said if they are giving any away I like that big male.

quess which one I picked :D and thats how Hitchiker came by his name and to live and be loved by us untill his death of bloat at 4 years old

That was a nice story. I'm sorry he died so young.
AWWW what a nice story. I love them sheppys!!! I always worry about bloat.... so sorry it took your beloved hitch.
Sounds like you gave Hitch a great life! Thank you!

Losing him to bloat, that must have been just awful. How big was he?

Hi ,

Jean, what a beautiful story of how Hitchhiker came to be at your house and what an appropriate name for him.

What a heartwarming story of how you and your son took the time and risk to save those pups. I'm so glad the homeowners decided to let you keep one and in some ways I believe although his life was short he was meant to have the happiest home crammed into his short 4 years.

I'm a confirmed Sheepie lover whom I think are adorable furballs but GSD's are definately one of the most handsome and noble looking dogs. He certainly captured the essence of his breed.

Thank you for sharing your story.

Marianne
Usually I show my hubby photos on this forum but I darent show him the GSD that is what he wanted and years ago I talked hi into a oes. That was young 4, but what a beautiful dog.
ps sorry to be ignorant but have never heard of bloat in dogs. is there a thread or symptoms causes I can read.
great story thanks for sharing
What a georgous GSD. Such a noble breed. (KTB) you can have an OES and GSD! I do plus two labs!! :D
thanks all , along with Dutch we have had 2 other OESs and 2 GSDs, I love both breeeds  would you believe I'm petrified of dogs other than my own

KTB just put bloat in the search on the top menu and you should find some threads on it. Deep chested dogs are prone to it
