Water

How much water do you give your sheepies each day? Do you leave water out all day & night? thx

we leave it out all the time. Even though Darcy is in a crate she has a dish attached to the cage. Only when they are out and in puppy traning is the water taken up at night.
I leave a bowl of water out 24/7. It is kept in the kitchen, so I can check it periodically to refill it. If I see floaties from a certain sheepie's beard I rinse out and refill. Violet/China are 4/3 yrs old, but even when they where pups I always left the water bowl out. Pearl, the cat sometimes stops by for a sip, but she also has her own water bowl in the Florida Room.
Once a pup has control of his bladder, leave fresh water out all the time, wherever they are, inside our out. The bowls are scrubbed out daily otherwise they get slimy and stinky quickly.

With puppies you have to monitor a bit more closely, perhaps serving water and going outside afterward. As they gain control, the bowl becomes more free-feed, er, free-water.
I leave it out all the time as well. I have 2 3 gallon waterers where the sheeps go most often. They go through 1 1/2 waterers each day so they drink a lot but they are very active as well.
We use one 10 cup stainless dish and keep it near the sink in the kitchen. It's rinsed/refilled several times each day. We work at home... otherwise we would need to go with multiple and larger water dishes to make sure they had an adequate supply.

About an hour before we go to bed, it's washed out for the day and propped on edge to dry overnight. It's put back down at around 5:30am. We've had air conditioning now for a couple of years but if it's hot or there's an illness, water is offered in between.
I leave water out 24/7 too...I fill and clean it two or three times a day....this time of year it is more of the 3x's......
There's always an inch of water left in the waterbowl. Anything more and there's a nasty beard, but I refill whenever she drinks. Depending on the last time she peed, I will take away water in the evening. She doesn't have access to it at night. I'd say she probably drinks "about" 1 stainless steel bowl in a day. It's the most common one used for a dog this size (only way I know how to describe).

If she didn't drink a lot during the day, I put her linatone in the water, and she will drink HOWEVER much water is in the bowl to taste that stuff.
24/7-

Max has the stainless steel waterbowl in the house and a watercooler type in the garage. When he is outside with us - or lounging in the garage we want him to have access as well. Both are washed and cleaned daily.
We always have water down. With three of them, you never know who'd gonna be thirsty! I feel like I spend a very large portion of life refilling water dishes.

Thinking we should put in a dog-activated drinking fountain...
If they didn't drink so much, I bet those cat fountains would be great!! I'm not sure yuki would like sharing her water though since she guards her food. The cats spend all day in front of their fountain.

I always think that but then what about the gunk that accumulates? We need some kind of filter system that'll get all the floaties and dirt out and just spew out clean water.

I have one elevated small bowl for Lucy with is like a 2 quart bowl and then one giant one of the ground for the boys that I call the "ol' ninety sixer." I can't remember the actual quart capacity but it's about 12 inches in diameter and it's so deep, that I can go to bathroom, come back to the sink and it still doesn't overflow.
I'm thinkin' of one that maybe the dog steps on to activate the water...
kinda like a public drinking fountain so there'd be fresh water all the time.
You'd have to install a drain too. Boy, am I getting lazy or what
They get all the fresh water they want with Jim and me filling the bowl.

I had an eye opener this past winter when we had a water main break and we had no water coming in the house for three full days. During this period I discovered that my two sheepdogs are good for approx. FIVE GALLONS of water per day (2.5 gals each). This was an awakening for me in terms of emergency planning (hurricanes, terrorism, etc.). The dogs drank way more water than I did. I also suspect they would go through more in the summer when it is hotter. I have to say Dudley is a water slob and drips his water everywhere after a drink. I was trying to convince him he needed to conserve when we had the water emergency

Wow that's a huge amount of water.

Mulligan doesn't drink much at all -- we used to worry and worry about him. His urine is quite dark and concentrated, but we can't get him to drink any more... so we don't try.

Of course this means he can go almost 3 weeks without a potty break, but we never let him go more than 10 or 11 hours. (10PM - 8 or 9AM).
