Well, my soldier should be coming home in a few months!!! You have no idea how excited Mr. J is. He is always throwing out the 90 day countdown (even though we really don't know when he is coming). We're thinking early Dec. Tiny chance earlier but he's volunteering to stay a week longer. (please don't get me started on this. he's trying to be a good guy. i keep reminding him he's got 2 kids at home.)

Anyway, I want to get a banner! What's the smallest size I can get away with ? I want it to go over the garage. Something big enough to be seen, but small enough to not make me go broke. What can I get away with? I'm terrible at imagining sizes.

2'x10' Vinyl Banner $95.00
2'x12' Vinyl Banner $105.00
2'x4' Vinyl Banner $55.00
2'x6' Vinyl Banner $65.00
2'x8' Vinyl Banner $80.00
4'x10' Vinyl Banner $155.00
4'x12' Vinyl Banner $175.00
4'x16' Vinyl Banner $225.00
4'x6' Vinyl Banner $125.00

What about 2X6? Is that too small?

2x6 is pretty darn big! He'll be looking at it from the driveway, so its not like it needs to be visible from a great distance (as in, how a business sign has to be visible from the road.... Cool
so that's a good size? I don't want it to be gigantic, just big enough to not be laughable in my attempt to have a banner. Laughing

Do i just nail it in? Is he going to be mad I stuck nails on the outside of the garage? I have no clue. (look, it's not like you guys expected me to know better... it's me afterall)
The banner should have grommets....th easiest way to hang it will be with cup hooks, or bungie cords, or rope. Scott can do it for you....we have one we put up on my booths all the time! Very Happy
hahaha Would you mind if the banner said "Ravenmoonart" on it? LOL

It's the thought that counts!

MY banner's bigger! Razz Laughing

Actually, we just had one made for our Palmer fair booth, and at 2x10 that sucker is GINOURMOUS and a pain in the butt to hang Confused
Why not buy a white sheet and paint your own words on it. Cheaper than the signs.

Have the kids stamp their hand/foot prints on it, and have them write (or try to write) their own names, etc............ Can even have the dogs paw print it too.

I did think about that Smile They even offer the above banner in paper which is 10X cheaper, but... it will be late enough in the winter season here that I can't predict a huge snow storm, rain, etc... I know my neighbor will probably decorate as she's so creative, so I don't want my husband to feel left out as he pulls up to the driveway.
How about using Christmas lights. Attach the strands to rods spelling out Welcome Home, or whatever. If you have trees, maybe you could buy a bunch of different size American Flags and tie them to the branches.

There's nothing prettier on a evergreen tree than our red, white and blue with red, white and blue lights.

I order banners for work all the time. 2 x 6 is plenty and will be a nice size that you'll be able to see from far away, too. Especially since the price difference is only $10 between 2 x 4 and 2 x 6, I'd definitely opt for the bigger one. Usually they also charge for sewing the edges and adding grommets but it's minimal.

Check with the banner company in terms of how you're using colors, too because they'll be different charges associated with that. They'll charge for the use of each color but you can usually get a banner of the predominant color you want to use and just design around that. If you need help, let me know.
Thanks for the help. If I can fully wake up, I will make the phone call to order today.

If they can personalize the shirt, lil J will be wearing this adorable shirt. There were cuter shirts on google, but they were all short-sleeve. Sad These people seem very flexible.

You may have noticed, its kinda traditional around here to put a sign up on the pedestrian overpass as you come into Eagle River, too. A sheet or paper works fine for that, since its covered. Very Happy
I never thought of that! that's a great idea. I'm too lazy for that though since it'll be winter. I may tell someone else that though!!

So I just ordered the banner, but I ended up using a different site that lets you personalize it yourself. Was soo much cheaper and the reviews are all positive (held up in snow, rain, wind). I wrote

"Welcome Home.
We missed you Daddy!
...just in time to shovel up this snow!!"
Cute! You'll have to take pics when it is up.
I am sure that if you just wrote it across your ever expanding tummy he would be just as, if not happier to read it. Perhaps you should have the little write him a note on the tummy, take a picture and send it to him. Smile Would you mind if he was home intime to see the first snow with lil J? I am continuing to hope the guys will be home intime to see the first snow. That they come back early, not that the snow waits.
As for fastening the banner, if you have a gutter over the garage, you can tie the ends to the gutter hangers. Love the t shirt. The whole idea is great.
That's a great idea, Jo. He's gonna love it. Very Happy
every time i read this i crack up.....

hehe...OUR expert advice...hahahhahahahah.... Very Happy
I don't know one thing about banners or size or anything-- but I do know that this is a great idea! What a special welcome home for someone who greatly deserves it. My special Thank you to and your family- To your husband for his courage and strength- and to you and Lil' J for the love and support while waiting for your soldiers return. I SALUTE YOU! hearts
Jo-

Love the banner idea! But don't forget to go to your local fabric store and buy a few lengths of the widest yellow ribbon you can find. Then tie it to all the trees in your yard. I did this for Mike when he came home from Bosnia- we had an apartment at the time, so the ribbon got tied to the balcony instead.

Nothing says welcome home my soldier like yellow ribbons!

(ok I'm all getting all teary eyed now, what a big ole sap I am!)
I could stand in the yard and do my Tony Orlando impression if that helps.
We don't have any trees in our yard Irisk! Laughing

You SHOULD come up here again Ron. That's when I love AK. Winter!!! So pretty. I always smile on the way to base.

I'm getting SOOOOOOo excited. My husband called and I told him about the shirt. He said, why not go to the PX (store) and get lil J some BDU's. I said, "that's too much work (finding boots his size, etc)." What I really meant was "thank goodness you don't dress our boy." Cool

He's sad that I won't bring yuki to the homecoming (at our base gym). Well, it'll be too cold for her to stay in the car, and hell if I'm standing outside 8 months pregnant with lil J until the guys arrive just to have his dog there. Besides, with Yuki... they'll be no room for all his luggage.
