When we were dating, he suggested we not buy gifts for each other "when" we get married since we spent so much on family. I brought it up this year as we have 7 kids to buy for plus grandparents [and we tend to spend quite a chunk], and he said, "I must have been trying to get on your good side then...... but of course we have to buy for each other." Why does he enjoy this stressful event, and why can't he settle on buying me a "Best Mom" mug and call it a Merry Christmas? Since this is his first Christmas back, I'm not going to argue, but I still think there should be a rule that you don't buy gifts for anyone 25 and up unless their your kid. /bahhhhhh humbug |

| We've tried a variety of "gift limit" techniques over the years....Scott and I have been married for 18 years, and together for over 20, and after a point you just cant "top" every previous year's gifts! Here's some of our attempts at limits: All gifts handmade (he felt I had a "unfair" advantage Only stockings (amazing what you can spend on tiny things! Joint gift "for the house" (cool idea, but both of us cheated at the last second and bought each other individual gifts. Made an agreement with our friends and family to only buy gifts for the kids and dogs. (Ok, so the dogs had a great X-mas, and everybody spent MORE than usual! Set strict spending limits (yeah, right Oh well....good luck! ![]() |
| If it were up to me, I'd say forget the family and ONLY get gifts for each other! |
| Johaeyo, there are a few people who don't find Christmas stressful at all. I'm one of them - I just love it. The more gift giving, the better. I decorate like a crazy person, and entertain just so I can show off my trees. 2 1/2 trees, we have a small one just for the Star Trek Ornaments (yes, we're total geeks).
Maybe you could make him a scrapbook with all the pictures and stories of Lil J from the time he was gone? I'm sure you've been sending him pictures, but since you couldn't talk to him often, he must have missed some great stories. |
| Hey, Joah....Heres an idea....

I'm laughing my head off. Bailey's Mom, you're nuts! This year I actually know what i'm getting him ....which is a first. It's a gift that I don't want to get him, don't believe is a good idea, have put my foot down each year about the IDEAL of one, but I know it's the last thing he'll expect, and I'm hoping it will help him more than aid him. I can't say what it is because I want to brag to him that i got him a gift already, which means he may hunt on here. I think it's a gift that ButtersStotch would appreciate. That's all I can say. I'm caving in b/c there's a 40% sell. Just upset that I'll have to spend more since 1 gift isn't good enough. I'm either cheap or a super spender. Hard to explain. Just depends on what things are.... I don't mind buying good (expensive) gifts for others, but I don't think "my" family necessarily needs to spend so much on 'fun unnecessary things.' |
