URGENT!!!! Shaggy in Huntington, Indiana

The number of OES being surrendered or abandoned in Indiana has gone sky high. We have been asked by the Huntington, IN shelter to help an OES-Mix named Shaggy but we must act quickly. They say they can only keep him until this Monday. http://search.petfinder.com/petnote/dis ... id=9224037

If anyone, especially in northern Indiana, southern Michigan or western Ohio, can foster this sweet young boy for just one week, we can get him to safety. Please PM me if you can help.

Thanks!

Nita

Have you contacted NEOESR?

grannie.annie@neoesr.org
Yes I did. Annie said, "no mixes" fosters are full.
 He does look worried...
I am worried too! Wish me luck on saving him. All help gratefully accepted
I hope this boy can find the help he needs.
Is Chicago too far?

Do we know if hes dog friendly?
Nita, I sent you a PM... I hope it's not too late.
I don't know if Nita has e-mail access right now as she's at the specialty. If you want, PM me and I can have her call you.
Hi,
I just talked to shelter, Keep fingers crossed, A rescue (Second Chance) is getting him, if they don't show the shelter will call me, YAY!
Will keep y'all posted.
I just spoke with the shelter as well, and the Second Chance people are not people the shelter has familiarity with, and their preference is to work with someone who is specific to OES... Nita in particular (although any place other than a shelter would be great). They have agreed to let me come get him and foster him on Nita's behalf if she calls them and gives them her approval, so we'll see. It's about 1 hour and 45 minutes away, so that wouldn't be too bad.
DO'H!! I just frantically PM'd a few people about trying to reach Nita so she can authorize the shelter to release Shaggy to me, and then I realized she had already given me her number a long time ago.... so i just called and left her a voice mail. I hope she gets it soon.
"Second Chance"? It is such a common name.... :(

Is this out of Indianapolis? Are they doing it to help out OES rescue temporarily?
Emily...I really hope this works out. If you aren't able to ahold of Nita soon, call NEOESR and they can probably get Shaggy released.

Their number is 781-259-8173.

Please let us know what happens!!!!
this is the Rescue Second Chance Bouvier Rescue.
email me privately if you want Jan's email.
This Rescue comes highly recommended by Toni Nyquist (BONE)
Jan cannot keep him, she is will spring him if needed

here is the info she sent to me;
Shaggy is in Huntington, IN. I have spoken with the shelter and told them we would "spring" him if OES in Indiana does not take him. He definitely is not a Bouvier, but he has four legs and a tail - and that is what counts. I have given the shelter all of our information and references and he WILL NOT BE PUT DOWN. I will let everyone know what is going on as soon as I hear.
another update;
Subject: Shaggy in Indiana

Hello all. I just got off the phone with Mary at the shelter. She said that Nita was sending someone in there tomorrow at 2pm - so SHAGGY IS SAFE!!!! I told her if anything fell through to please give me a call and we would be more than happy to drive down and get him - even if it was to transport him to another rescue. She said she would.

So thanks everyone (especially you, Nita). We can't save them all, but with fantastic teamwork like this - every one we save is an extra blessing :-)

I'm closer. If I need to , I'll spring him over the weekend (I work).

Has anyone talked to Emily, who is interested in him?

Viva la Rescue!
:yay:
I'm picking him up at 2:00 pm tomorrow afternoon!! I plan on fostering him, and when Nita returns from Nationals, we'll figure out what to do from there, but at least he will be safe.

The lady at the shelter said he is definitely NOT potty trained, and needs a lot of manners training, but that he doesn't seem aggressive. She said he likes to play a little rough sometimes, but I'm guessing that wont be a problem for Stella, lol. He's not crate trained either, so I guess that will be the first thing I start on wih him.... after I give him about a million kisses.

Fortunately Sampson stays in his playpen all day without any accidents, so I can use Sampson's crate for training Shaggy.
That is SO cool! :yay: :cheer: :go: :clappurple:
That is wonderful news!
Bravo! Great team work!!
Is'nt it great when a plan comes together and saves a sheepie.
Shaggy is Safe!! The paperwork on him lists him as an owner surrender. It says that he is 7 months old and has had 3 owners. Under undesirable behaviors, the owner had listed "excessive barking", which is probably because he was left outside (the ends of his ears have sores from flea/fly bites). It doesn't say what he is mixed with, but the lady at the shelter said she thought it was greyhound. He does have a rather long narrow snout, so that is very possible. He is SOOOOO cute!! He is also SOOO thin  He's kinda like a bag of bones, which made me think of "Baggins" (the character from Lord of the Rings), so I've been calling him Shaggy Baggins, and it sounds pretty cute.
I stopped by the vet's office (they didn't examine him) but I was able to use their scale to check his weight. He was only 16.3 kilos (36 pounds). He has been shaved very very short, except his feet are poofy, and get this... he has a tail!!! And his tail has a little white pom-pom on the end. I will get pictures up soon.
The lady at the shelter said that Shaggy is very hyper, but he has been extremely calm and sweet so far, but he's still getting used o his surroundings. I get the feeling he was dehydrated because he was so thirsty, but he hasn't peed yet... he just seemed dehydrated. And he was very very hungry... gobbled his food right up... with no food aggression :D He wagged his tail at the other dogs (they were in their crates), and did not show any signs of aggression so far.

I am SO glad we were able to help this guy out... he really is a sweet boy. He's very cuddly. Thank you Nita for finding this guy, and thank you to those of you who helped get me in touch with Nita, and thanks to everyone else for the good vibes and prayers... This place is the best!!!
Does he look less worried? :hearts:
Thankyou, thankyou, thankyou! :yay: :hearts:

I was so worried about this guy, and so sad that there was nothing I could do to help!

OMG....3 homes in only 7 months of life :!:  Poor guy...no wonder he looks so sad and scared!
Yay!!! I hope that cute boy keeps up the good behavior. I am so glad you were able to save him!
Oh Darlin'! Bless you! Thank you for taking control of this very sad situation.

Our hearts and support are with you.
Hugs to Shaggy Baggins and his new family!
This is just so cool!!! Sheepie and Greyhound, a couch potato with occasional bursts of running in circles. That will be fun!
Shaggy slept all night in the crate with no problems. He scarfed his food down this morning in nothin' flat, with his tail just wagging away. he growled at Sampson a little last night, but not in a mean way, more in a "hey I'm trying to rest, quit sniffing my butt" kind of way. I don't think he's 7 months old though, because I checked his teeth, and they are all big fully groen-in grown up teeth. Sampson is 6 months old and his teeth are no wehre near this developed. i think he's just small, so they thought he was younger.... but who knows, his feet are huge so maybe he does still have some growing to do. Either way, he'll get fattened up to a healthy weight now.

I'm thinking it shouldn't be too hard to find him a furever home... he is SO sweet and snuggly. Anywhere I am, there he is, and if I want to sit and watch tv, he lies at my feet quietly and gets up to nudge my hand so I'll pet him, then he lies back down. He doesn't bother the cats too much, just approaches to sniff them.

Ron, he doesn't look worried at all now :) He has dark "eyeliner" around his beautiful brown eyes, so they look very dark, but the worry and fear is gone. There is a sadness to his eyes though, but over time, that too will disappear, I'm sure of it.

I had goten used to Stella's hyperactivity, but having this guy around had really brought her naughtiness back into the spotlight  I think she's a little jealous.

Today will be his first day in the crate while I am working (although I will be leaving early)... so we'll see how that goes.
Good! I'm so glad you were able to spring him and that he is adjusting to your house. I am sure he is tickled pink to be out of the shelter and in home again. Thanks for fostering!!
Thank YOU for saving him !!! :clappurple:

I can not wait to see pictures.....(hint,hint,hint)

Thanks SO much for helping Shaggy.
You've saved his life by giving him a
safe place to stay until he gets to Nita.

THANK YOU!!
keep us posted how he is doing .. he is in good hands now
YAY Again!!

His eyes were haunting me...
Hugs for Shaggy Baggins! :ghug:
Haven't been on much recently so only reading this post now. Thanks to everyone that stepped up to help Shaggy out!!!

I'm crying tears of happiness that at least one was saved at at such a young age and three former owners this boy deserved that "second chance".

You guys are Shaggy's guardian angels!

Marianne
OMG... Shaggy is SOOOOOOOOOOOO sweet!!! The lady at the shelter said he was not house trained at all, but he really is, I think. He just doesn't have really obvious signals, but he does come nudge me and then runs to the door. and when he was in his crate this morning and needed to go out, he whined and whimpered, and when I opened the door to the crate, he went right to the door.
The lady from the shelter said the dogs were alone there from about 6PM to 9AM though, so I can imagine he had a lot of accidents there... that is way too long to be expected to hold it. I'm giving him his first bath tonight. This boy is SO loveable. He nestles his head into my shoulder and puts his paws up on my shoulder like he's hugging me. It's so heart melting. And his little tail just wags and wags... he just seems so happy. He's very gentle with the kids, too.
I haven't let him play with the dogs yet because I want to keep introducing them very slowly, but I want to try to get them to the point of playing this weekend. I'm going to go upload some pics right now...
To think he was hours away from euthanisia!
Thank yo SO much for taking him in!
I posted pics of Shaggy over in the pics thread. Go check him out... he's adorable!
OES Rescue here in Indiana just exploded in the past couple of weeks. First the four boys (now three) in Vincennes, then Beatrix the puppy, then an 8 yr. old male near Indianapolis, needing to deliver Daisy to her new home in Michigan on the way to the show and finally, little Shaggy in Huntington.

Through much perseverance on the parts of Mary at the shelter, Sue of OESRNSE and Emily (I heart Stella), Shaggy was able to get out of the shelter and have a second chance. Bouvier rescue as well as Beardie rescue had a part in helping out as well. Thanks to Buttersstotch for following up on the phone call and Jaci for always being there. What teamwork!

Shaggy almost fell through the cracks because we had nobody to take him in. If anyone has room to take a dog in even for a couple days it can mean the difference between life and death for a dog like Shaggy. If you can help, get on any rescue's "foster roster" and make a difference.

We can't save them all but Emily, Sue and Mary saved Shaggy. Thanks for being there for him.

Nita
