Kitchen Nightmares - Gordon Ramsey

Did anyone watch this show last night? Tony and I thought it was great!! :clappurple:
Respond to this topic here on forum.oes.org
no, got suckered into the last comic standing
I watched last comic standing, but didn't see that this show was on? Same channel as hell's kitchen??
Yes, its on Fox. Here its on Wednesdays at 8 pm.

He goes to real restaurants that are failing, and first, observes, then makes suggestion and does retraining. Yes, he's really tough but some of the people he's dealing with need it!

The place he went last night was such a filthy dump!!! And the manager was such a jerk. Gordon really put him in his place!

And yes...last night, they all ended up loving him.

I really enjoyed it.
Joan and I watched it, and were totally confused by the manager's extremely rapid turnaround in attitude. I felt I missed half the show or something.

Then in the "epilogue" it was a little disjointed; suddenly we were weeks/months into the future. We didn't really get to see the new kitchen operating well on its own.

We didn't get to see the kitchen being remodeled -- I'm sure THAT would have been a treat LOL. I find it nearly impossible to believe it was all that equipment was unplumbed, removed, re-plumbed and reinstalled overnight.

The show needed another 15 minutes or half hour -- or maybe it needs to be a two hour show.

Joan's favorite part was when Ramsey sent Peter and his dad in to cook. Well of course you can't just throw someone into the kitchen and expect them to succeed, but she liked it that he was being shown how bad the equipment was.

My favorite line was when the chef said "He's going to knock the ravioli" and Angelo said: "Why?" and the chef replied: "Because it's from Restaurant Depot."

My least favorite part was when Ramsey said in front of the whole staff that "this place is a gold mine, you're all going to become filthy xxxx rich". How dare he? The waitstaff and the line cooks and whoever else probably aren't equity partners in the business. That just seemed totally inappropriate to us.

We'll watch again.

As a side note; does anyone else here think that the show could/should have been called.... wait for it..... here it comes.....

"Kitchen Hells" instead of "Kitchen Nightmares"?

Did they miss the boat on the play on words from "Hell's Kitchen" to "Kitchen Hells"? Or did they decide it might be too confusing to some people, or ruin a trademark or something. I gotta believe it was first pitched as "Kitchen Hells" by someone! LOL
I don't believe they did all that in 1 week, Ron. But, I think the turnaround for Peter was when Gordon pointed the restaurant would be better off without him. Hey! What else did that guy have going for him, besides white teeth, a tan and a Mercedes?

I think 2 hours each week would be too long.

Kitchen Hells would have been cute!
OMGosh, I loved this episode!

In the beginning, Gordon was like "Where are you?"
the guy answered "New Jersey." (they're in New York)

That's so awesome they fired the GM which I'm only assuming happened b/c he magically wasn't there in the last scene.

That Indian waitress looked like she clung to anyone with money/power. She so wanted to hop on that consultant's train. The one that Ramsey brought in from a different Indian restaurant.
Yes, I really liked it! Hey! I wouldn't mind hopping on Gordon

I think I had read, that the GM tried to sue Gordon after that experience, but I don't know the details.

I couldn't figure out why such a small restaurant had SO many managers! Floor manager, Operations Manager, General Manager and of course the owner. Huh? It looked to have about 20 tables! I think all they needed was a good Host!

When Gordon took them to see how spotless his kitchen was, I was really excited, because that is the restaurant I ate at when I was in NY. And, as I've said before, it was spectacular!!!
It is much easier for a restaurant that charges $100 or $200 per person and has 100's of tables to be able to afford to have extra people for cleaning, or a cleaning crew that comes in every night.

I missed this show . :( I wonder if they are available online like some other networks?
This should take you the website, where you can see full episodes:

http://www.fox.com/kitchennightmares/
While I agree and thought the same thing that it's easier for Gordon to keep a magnificent kitchen compared to other lower-end establishments........... this was just disgusting. This was due from a lack of cleaning and organization (keeping track of when food came, got old, etc).

If they lacked anything, it was waitresses and an additional cook once they actually got customers.
Ron, even if its a tiny restaurant, there is no excuse for the filth that was in the restaurant they featured.

Ramsey's is spotless, like a hospital, and yes, that cost huge bucks, but the condition of the other restaurant....well, I personally think, it probably could have been shut down.

A small kitchen, one person, a bucket of hot water and soap....throwing out "green" beef and boxes of vegetables inflitrated with bugs....how much does that cost?

Not nearly as much as a law suit!
I haven't seen it yet, but I'll take your word for it! ;)
I didn't care for this past episode. Nothing compared to the last one.
I just saw the end of it, so I couldn't tell if it was good.

I'll have to watch it on dvr.
I will watch it tonight or Saturday. It was on opposite the Red Sox playoff game.
Ack !

I forgot to watch it online, and now I can't find it online, I think because tonight's episode is getting ready.

Oh well.

Anyway one question -- did anyone else notice that in the "Purnima" (episode 2) show, the restaurant's name was Dillon's, but when they made the new outside banners and awnings that it said "Dillions"?

Ooooops!
OOOOhhh! I found last week's show! JOAN! QUICK! Let's watch!
I missed last night show. I was on the phone with my friend from NJ who is a major talker!

How was it?
I had never seen it before, so I found it channel surfing.
He was at a restaurant in Islip, NY, a really gross place run by a son and mother who were clueless. The son wouldn't stand up to the chef, whose food was awful. The place was dirty, the food rotten, and the staff was fine with it!
The best part was they found "pesto" that was spoiled in a container when they were investigating the kitchen. It was the same stuff they served Gordon the night before.....he completely flipped out.
I think I'll watch again next week, I hope he never comes to a place in this area, that was hard to believe a restaurant could be so dirty.
I suggest you not go into the kitchen of the restaurants you like then! :D

I liked this one! What a wimp!

I liked last week's show too... although it was a little anticlimactic and boring here's why I liked it:

It shows that with a little effort, most restaurants just need a kick in the pants to update their menu and get a new lease on life. Freshen things up a bit and maybe hire a menu consultant.

I know a restaurant very near me that Joan and I went to when they first opened. An Indian place, we liked the people and the food was very good and reasonably priced. But it has been empty empty empty and Joan and I have a RULE that we don't eat at empty restaurants.

Last weekend, Joan and I had an errand to run and dinner to eat. We discussed where we'd go for dinner for quite a while. One of the options was to go back to our new favorite place, but it is pricey. So we decide to go to a new place we've been eyeing that just opened.

We walked in and saw that the price was $16 for the Asian Buffet. OK, not terrible. The place was nearly empty and it's prime time, but we make allowance for a restaurant that has just opened. The food was pretty good, nicely presented. It's hard to be a buffet if there isn't a good flow of customers. Some of the things were a little old from sitting. Probably would come back if their business picks up.

Then the bill came for nearly $60. Joan jumps up and sees that we BOTH saw the sign and looked at the price of the lunch buffet, dinner buffet was $27. OK, maybe a little deceptive, but if we actually read the sign.... so it's our fault. We pay and leave, vowing never to return.

PS Our favorite restaurant is $1 more per person. :(
What an expensive buffet!!! I have no idea how some buffets stay in business (always empty).

Anyway, I also enjoyed last night's episode but TOTALLY wasn't surprised to hear he sold the restaurant after Ramsey fixed it up. The male owner just wasn't leadership/owner material.

Jump.
How high?

Higher, $#%#@!

I really dont get how local health inspections had failed to catch some of these places long before Ramesy shows up! Having worked in restaurants, and done catering, the tiniest little things (NOTHING like the horrors shown on this show) could get you a poor rating....and the kind of stuff seen on this show could get you shut down! 8O

That said, Scott and I really enjoy this show! We had (when we were younger, and fooooolish) planned to open a restaurant one day, and wow...here's a show about some of the reasons we changed our minds!

For those of you who enjoy this show, and also "Hell's Kitchen"....try finding a DVD of the BBC series "Chef". Its a fictional, VERY funny sitcom about a Ramsey-esque chef. 8)

Oh Ron, please don't ruin dining out for me, that would never happen here
Uhh, right??
Right!!!
"Sebastian's"

This was a tough show to watch!

I really felt badly for this "delusional" guy. He hadn't figured it out yet that his concept was a failure and that he wasn't going to be able to keep his concept and earn a living.

I hope the place is wildly successful and that an influx of cash will ease his dented ego. ;)
I was left with the impression that he wasn't going to keep up with the change. He didn't strike me as a motivated leader/business person. I know he'd be in a lot of legal trouble, but I kept waiting for him to hit Ramsey!!!
Yep...I don't think he will keep the changes. He was very egotistic...and just wants to be famous for "his" unique menu.

He'll be bankrupt in 6 months.

Wanna visit?

Is it the old menu, the new menu, or a cross?
I think its the old menu. Its just too crazy. I would love a restaurant that you just sit down, and have no choices. They just bring you a lovely "beef, chicken or fish" meal.

I'm so simple!
I am thinking this is the new menu! 8O

I was reading some online reviews on his restaurant and someone mentioned they went there last week and mentioned the choices.

Plus it looks like there aren't 20 choices anymore, but fewer ( only 8 ).
Also, there's a wood oven roasted chicken item.
I have a bad feeling that he resorted to a combo menu.

In the older reviews that trashed his place, Sebastian replied and defended his resaurant. He wrote in ALL CAPS.

The funniest part is that clearly Sebastian himself was doing some shill reviews, and EVERY other WORD was in CAPS for a couple of "different" reviewers. How sad, yet how funny, yet how sad.
^^^^

YEA RON? SO WHAT? I WANNA MAKE A NAME FOR MYSELF AND GET MY FRANCHISES ALL OVER THE WORLD!!!!

DONTCHA THINK THE CAPS WILL HELP DRAW ATTENTION TO ME????????

I thought last nights episode was really, REALLY good. (Its the one about Finn McCool's). I really like that family. Brian (the chef) was an a** but Gordon was kind, and really was able to see what Brian was dealing with, and the two of them came to terms.

It was a really heartwarming ending.
Joan and I loved this episode. (Finn McCool's)

BTW Did anyone else notice the Komondor walking across the street? Looked just like Bear!

I think it was just when the show was coming back from a commercial.

I never read this thread because I don't watch the show but I clicked on it by mistake. Good timing, huh? Get me some video!
Well....

You could try http://www.fox.com/fod/player.htm?show=nightmares

It's at 12:51 in the video... but I think I caught the tail end of the dog in another spot VERRRY briefly at 1:37
I wanted to mention it too. It was just a nice one crossing the street on a walk.

Good eye, Ron! I like to see other Koms that look like Bear-- not all perfect and tiny corded. By the looks of the long cords on his tail, he's a few years older than Bear but his body has been trimmed back a bit.

That Gordon guy swears a lot.
Yes, he does. :( not really necessary, especially for a prime time broadcast show where they're gonna have to bleep him all the time.

On the other hand, I've worked in kitchens. 8O
This guy is brutal and extremely funny.... :yay: :yay:
The best part about this past show was the fact that just this guy coming into a restaurant (Finn McCool's) and giving a few cooking tips and a little sprucing up and a little experience-based consulting... look at what he could get that place to accomplish.

They could never have done this on their own. The chef and the people while well intentioned just don't have the knowledge or imagination to make it work.

I bet that this show will have multiple effects on the restaurant biz; I bet that restaurant consultants become busier and grows as an industry. I hope that restaurants will learn from this and maybe make some changes and get some ideas on how to improve things for themselves.

A restaurant just opened down the street from us in a location that had been successful previously, but ultimately failed after a decline in quality and a decline in customers. This restaurant is trying to copy and/or follow on the coattails of another restaurant a few miles down the road that is WILDLY successful, but they aren't going to make it; IMHO they are a poor imitation at the same hefty ($27 buffet) price. They are empty.

They need to change directions quickly; I'd love to see Chef Ramsay pay them a visit!
I love that he swears so much. But, I'm just a sailor on leave, at heart!
I had a feeling it wouldn't come out of its hole. rent+cost of running the restaurant and things associated with it+debt seemed too much for the area the restaurant was in. I also think a lot of the blame is on the owner and her failure to be assertive [AND FIRE] those who worked for her. I would not want either of those cooks working for me even if I was impressed how well the black chef worked on the opening night. Overall, he's too disrespectful and ghetto (screaming in the kitchen, singing real loud knowing you are being evaluated by a top chef, etc) for my taste. The other guy was just inexperienced.

edit: just an article on last night's episode of Lela's.

Kitchen Nightmares – Gordon Tackles Lela’s
Written By Jennifer Brown.

This week Gordon travels to Ponoma, California, to spruce up Lela’s, a fine dining restaurant that’s going belly-up. We meet Lela herself, a gentle-looking lady who is floundering under debt, and Tabitha, the outspoken waitress. We also get a glimpse into the kitchen, which is domain of executive chef, Ricky, a loud, brash cook who can’t get along with Tabitha and whose ranting and cursing is often heard out in the dining room. Alongside Ricky works mild-mannered sous chef, Lex, and prep cook, “Buzzard,” nicknamed aptly after his penchant for picking at and eating the restaurant’s food without permission.

Gordon arrives, noticing how quiet the place is. “It’s like a ghost town around here,” he says, looking around. Once inside he discovers Tabitha’s number one beef with Ricky, which is that the restaurant rarely has many of the menu items. In fact, as Gordon tries to order, most of what he wants is “unavailable.” He also notes that there are misspellings on the menu, and that everything tastes frozen. He’s seriously questioning whether or not the chef knows how to cook.

Ricky’s not worried, though, saying, “He’s a man just like I am,” and calling Gordon’s distaste for his food, “…just one person’s opinion.” It’s not long before kitchen rivals Tabitha and Ricky are at it in the kitchen, a shouting match which Gordon overhears in the dining room. He makes a beeline for the kitchen, where he confronts the staff, especially Ricky. He says our: Quote of the Night: “I thought [the food] was a pile of **ah-ooga!!** I was embarrassed for you.”

Ricky gets attitude with Gordon, but that’s not going to faze Gordon in the least. He sets into inspecting the kitchen and quickly finds that it’s not clean, confirming his suspicion that Ricky is lazy. The freezer’s not cold enough and there’s smelly, rotting meat everywhere. He gathers the entire staff together and makes them clean the whole restaurant, top to bottom, while he hits the streets to get a feel for the neighborhood. What Gordon discovers is that Ponoma is home to a lot of students, not many of whom can afford fine dining fare.

Back at the restaurant, Gordon also finds that the atmosphere in the kitchen is too jokey, too relaxed, and the chefs are playing around too much. When half the kitchen staff suddenly leaves before the dinner shift is over, Gordon chases them down on the street. He discovers that Buzzard is making off with loads of food and wine. He confronts Buzzard about this and makes him come back into the restaurant to show Lela what he’s taking. The confrontation inside gets ugly and Buzzard storms out, mad. “If it was up to me,” Tabitha says, “I would fire Buzzard’s ***!”

The next day, Gordon gathers the staff together again for a staff meeting. During this meeting he tells them that they’re not working as a team. He again confronts Ricky, who Gordon has discovered is using powdered mashed potatoes. “Where’s your respect for your professionalism? I’d rather change my career than make it out of powdered mash,” Gordon says. Lela gives the team an ominous warning that attitudes better change or she’ll be making changes of her own. Buzzard finally shows up and Lela shows just what she means about making changes by firing him on the spot.

Meanwhile, Gordon sits Ricky and Lex down, blindfolded, for a taste test (ah, shades of Hell’s Kitchen…is it the summer season yet?). He finds that Ricky often gets it wrong while Lex gets it right. He decides that Lex is the better cook. He then takes the two chefs into the kitchen and has them help him create a new “contemporary casual” menu. “I felt like I was right back in the classroom,” Ricky says, as he and Lex create a new “Pomona Salad” under Chef’s instruction. Then Gordon creates for them a new burger (“Lela’s Famous Burger”) and takes it to the streets in a mobile grill – giving away free burgers to promote the new and improved Lela’s.

Lela herself is sent off by Gordon to get a makeover and returns (beautiful) just in time to see the unveiling of the design team’s work, which has given the restaurant a new cozy look, complete with a snazzy red couch and overstuffed chairs.

One hour prior to re-launch, Gordon holds a quickie meeting, whereby he declares Tabitha the manager of the front of the house, and Lex the head chef in the back. “I don’t think it’s fair,” Ricky says, but he goes along with it. This may prove to be a bad decision on Gordon’s part, however, as the kitchen crumbles when Lex’s nerves overtake him. The food takes too long to get out to the tables and, when it does go out, it goes to the wrong tables. The pressure is too much for Lex and he sneaks out for a break, right in the middle of the rush. Lela doesn’t like this and chases him down outside. Harsh words are exchanged between the two of them and Lex leaves the restaurant. Gordon rushes outside to head him off, but Lex walks away from Gordon, too. Even Ricky tries to chase down Lex, but he’s too late. Lex is outa there. Ricky is forced to take control of the kitchen again, and he works it. The food flies out of the kitchen. Soon Lex returns to back up Ricky and they finish out the night strong.

After the dinner service is complete, Gordon pulls Ricky aside and gives him major kudos. “You did well tonight,” Gordon says. “It feels good to be back,” Ricky answers.

Time to say goodbye and there aren’t many tears or hugs, just Gordon telling the team that they “won your first battle.”

“Chef Gordon is an amazing dude,” Ricky says.

5 months later…Despite the renewed efforts of the staff and the fresh menu, Lela succumbed to her massive debt and closed the door on Lela’s for good.

Next on Kitchen Nightmares: Gordon’s challenge is an Italian restaurant with a partying staff.
