Oprah's show on Autism

Holy cow was that emotional. Anyone catch it?

Here are the notes I took. But before I paste them, they said they know it's a controversial topic especially since most scientists do not believe in this theory. However, their side was basically that parents with first hand experience share different thoughts.

I am not saying by posting this that I agree with everything that was said, but it sure was enlightening.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Autism odds are 1 in 94 for boys!!
Overall it effects 1 in 150 children.
Jenny McCarthy (who btw is dating Jim Carrey) found out her son had autism when he turned 2. She said her son always smiled at her. Always looked directly at her. So, she never considered autism. It wasn't until 2 that he stopped doing those things.
It all started one night when he slept in and she found him having seizures in bed. Doctor told her to go home... that it was probably from a fever that escalated. BTW, he never had a fever.
Seizures continued. Kept getting diagnosed with epilepsy. Her gut said, "that's wrong." After several specialists and world renown neurologists, they found out he had Autism.
The only way he would learn is if he saw it on video.
ex: no matter how many times he saw kids play, saw kids jump, or speak... he wouldn't get it. he would see it on video, and get it!
Her kid always looks like he's "thinking..." especially before he does speak.
Every picture she had of her son before 2, he's smiling from cheek to cheek. At 2, something happened... and not a single picture with a smile. No soul in his eyes.
It's her gut that vaccines "triggered" the autism
since looking back ...this is the only thing that had just happened in his life.
CDC (center of disease control) told Oprah after hearing about the show that "we simply don't know what causes most causes of autism, but vast majority of science to date does not support that theory, but we are conducting more studies to prove this."
(little side note from researching this before: I guess it was a british study that had found that vaccines "triggered" autism. More specifically, the MMR shot. However, when they conducted this study again, they just couldn't come up with evidence that showed the kids with autism weren't going to get it anyway and it was the shot that caused it.)
From what Jenny researched, she feels the problem is "one size fits all" when it comes to doses and time schedule of these shots given to children. Some children are tiny and not in the category as the kid 10lbs heavier yet gets the same dose.
Recovery:
She feels these kids need gluten free, artificial flavoring, wheat free, diary free diet. By removing these items, her son doubled his language in 2 weeks. Before that, never a word. Immediately he began eye contact again. Became more affectionate. Once you detox them, you clean up the brain.
Her son is now 5 but is recovering from it which is the key word. If it weren't for "google" ....he wouldn't be, she said.
DIVORCE RATE IS UP TO 80% of parents with kids with autism. Most of these men said the only way they felt they could connect with the mom was to talk about autism since so much time is devoted to the child. It was the demise of her own relationship as well.
Rodney Peete and Holly Robinson's story:
Said you only have a small window of time that you can actually break through that wall that is up between you and them understanding you.
She said her son was a little pre-mature and that his immune system may have not been up to par when he started to get vaccinations. This is just her thinking out loud, not something she said as "fact." Her son was kicked out of school b/c he was "unteachable." How sad is that?
In 1998, it was 1 in 3000 kids. So if you think how fast the autism rate is growing.....it's scary.
Her son was allergic was "Wheat gluten." What happens when her son ate wheat was his head was clouded which made him not be able to think. Making his autism even worse. Her son isn't all better like Jenny's kid but is making progress (since she's got all the $$$$ to do it).
Okay, that's it.
The other side of vaccinations is.... there's no proof that it does cause it. Also, what do you risk if you don't vaccinate. If your child does get something a vaccination helps reduce, it could be very serious or even deadly. These are the reasons both of these moms vaccinated.
More info could be found in Jenny's new book regarding the matter.
I didn't see the show, and I don't follow the autism issue much at all.
These are my impressions.
For the longest time, the "autism is caused by vaccines" people were certain --absolutely certain-- that the problem was the trace mercury in the preservatives of the vaccines. The arguments sounded pretty logical, and there was some skimpy evidence to go along with it, so they even convinced me that OK, we should take the mercury out of the vaccines.
Well the government responded to very limited data that showed that some of these poor kids affected by autism had an inability to naturally remove some mercury from their bodies by forcing manufacturers away from the mercury preservation process. The government did not issue an immediate recall of all vaccine from the doctor's offices (maybe not even the complete distribution channel).
The government said, essentially: "Well, now we'll know if a few years if the mercury was the cause." which immediately put the mercury blamers on the defensive: "Well, we won't really know because those mercury vaccines don't expire for 6 or 7 years and they're still being used by doctors." Which is kind of funny. I guess when you win your crusade ya just can't fold up your tent and walk away from your cause.
So it's been a few years, and I'm not hearing about any dramatic reduction in the incidence of autism, so it must be something else in the vaccines. It will be a super super super hard row to hoe to get the government to respond again to vaccines as a possible culprit in autism.
That is the sad truth of the misguided good intentions of the people.
Ron,
You are right about the mercury.
I have also read about a study of autistic kids where they found the measles virus in the gutts of these kids. The strain was the exact strain that was only found in the vaccine. :?
Ryan was born in 1998 and they were still using the mercury preserved vaccines until at least 1999. I do blame the vaccine. Because he was completely normal until a year old. He was a happy, smiley, babbling baby. At 1 yr old he just basically shut down. He had been saying Papa for his Dad, Bob for Bob Barker (Ryan loved the Price is Right) and all of that just stopped. He didn't say another "real" word until he was 3 1/2 and receiving speech therapy for about 18 months.
If and I say "if" because I have no real proof that the vaccines caused Ryan's problems.... They are going to continue to cause problems in children as long as their pediatricians are pushing the flu vaccine.
Yes they have removed the mercury from the "core" vaccines for kids....
But BEWARE Moms, The Flu Vaccine has mercury in it. Increasing the odds of Autism.
I do not allow either of my kids to receive the Flu vaccine just because of that fact. If they get sick, I'll bring them to the Dr.
There is also a great book of immunizations that I read a few years back. Ryan's Chiropractor recommended it and works with the Author. They also do seminars on the subject. It's called The Sanctity of Human Blood: Vaccination is NOT immunization. I found it to be a very interesting read.
Interesting....
My 9 year old son Joseph is on the Autism spectrum, however, we could tell there was something very different about him from the first week after he was born. He couldn't stand to be held and did not like any loud noises, even running water or a vacuum cleaner. He would stiffen up and his eyes would roll back in his head if I tried to hold him close enough to me to breastfeed him. He sat up at a normal age, but did not seek out other people when he learned to crawl. He avoided eye contact, and would not eat if someone was looking at him.
At about 9 months old, we noticed he was sorting his toys in piles by texture (wooden toys in one pile, metal toys in another, plush toys in yet another, etc...) He did not babble either. Joseph was 3 years old when he started speaking, and his first word was moon (his second was light). The school told me he was mentally retarded, and they put him in the Special Needs Kindergarten class. By the time he was in forst grade, they started to realize he was actually brilliant (like when he brought a Rudyard Kipling book to school and was reading it in the corner by himself). up until this, they kept telling me he couldn't read. :roll: Now he is the youngest 5th grader in his school and he is in the gifted program with a 4.0 GPA. He still can't function socially near as well as his peers, and he sompletely melts down over any little thing sometimes, and he also doesn't like a lot of physical contact (quick hugs and peck kisses will do). So I'm not sure if a vaccine could be to blame in his case, but I am wondering if perhaps the gluten thing may have something to do with it?
I think I'm going to research a gluten free diet plan and try it on him.
I thought the show was outstanding. Neither shooting down parents who vaccinate or those who choose not to. Just powerful information!
I didn't realize w/ my first 3 children that I HAD a choice.
Did alot of reading w/#4 & decided against shots. She's had tetanus because of a fall& trip to the E.R
The disrespect that I encountered from the nurses was awful.
One of my grown children suffers from a chemical imbalance& how will we ever know what triggered that?
Either way, it's very scary
If anyone is interested, this link was on the MSN homepage today. I haven't read the entire article, but I remembered this thread when I saw it. I thought some people might want to see it.
As old fashioned as it sounds, I have been against vaccinating for every little thing for a long time.
I believe (just gut, no scientific data behind it) that so many of new strains of infections and diseases we now see have developed because we have over vacinated ourselves.
Yes, kids get sick from mumps, but they then build their own natural immunities. Same for Chicken pox.
I also believe (truly) the space program has led to a lot of the global warming.
Yes, its old fashioned, but these are my humble thoughts.
Last time my husband and I talked, we decided we won't be giving our son the flu shot until he is a lot older ....and feel his body can handle it.
I understand not giving things like the flu shot, but there are some other vaccines out there that I feel should be given. I know there is a risk of autism, but to me, reintroducing diseases that have been eliminated (like polio) doesn't seem to be the answer...
