3 mos. old in pet store

Hi everyone, I did not really where to post this, or why I am posting this. Last night Rick and I had to go get dog food in Vestal, NY about 45 min. from home, took Elliott with us, the lady at pet depot came up to us and asked us to go back to the cages with her. We did, and there was a three mos. old sheepie in a cage sharing it with a golden retriever pup!!!! She wondered if we would be interested in him, of course I said no. She brought him out, he was so sweet. She seemed concerned about him, not health wise, I really could not put my finger on it, but she also told me where the dog came from. I showed her the differnce in size with Elliott, who just turned 11mos. 76lbs. and the pup who will be that size in no time. She takes extra care of him and seemed so sad about him being there and wants a good home for him asap. I know it wasn't a sales pitch. I told her we would be up in a couple of weeks to see him, and if they were having a problem placing him, I would try to help. I really don't know how I would help. Just thought I would see if I could get any thoughts on this. Thanks

Sorry, I can't offer any help. But I always wondered where pet stores get their pets from. Do they contract with reputable breeders and offer health guarantees? Is it dangerous to buy a puppy from a pet store? (I know it can be for the puppy, but I mean for the buyer) Where did she get the puppy?

I'm sure it's not 100% cut and dry (maybe it is though) that ALL pet stores are bad places inherently to buy puppies and that they ALL buy from bad breeders...BUT, yes, it's typically bad to buy a puppy from a pet store.

Barney came from a pet store and his papers say he's from a place in Missouri, which basically means a puppy mill.
Maybe you could get her to contact NEOES rescue. They are in Mass, and I'm sure they could help her find him a home.

Breaks your heart so see them in a petstore, doesn't it?
Reputable breeders do not sell to pet stores, this pup came from some breeder in the Syracuse,NY area. He looked healthy, his nose was small for an oes, and it was kind of long and pointy, his legs seemed long. My 3 seemed more compact at that age.
NEOSR was the first thing I thought of, but the store is selling him for $800.00. The lady at the store said she was going to try to explain to potential customers, the care and grooming he needs, but all people see is a cute puppy for now. She said she hopes he does not end up in rescue, I said it would be the best thing that could happen to him!!!

That's what happened to Barney. His original owner saw him in the pet store and he was SO cute and she even said that she had a sheepdog as a child (so you'd think she'd know he gets big) and then when he got big (at only 5 months!) she didn't want him anymore  Her loss!
I think when I go back up, I will give her my name and number, and if someone buys him she can pass it along with the pup. If they shoud have any trouble or think an oes is not for them.
Where are you in NY state. I live in NYS and would try and get the pup?
Yikes. I'm sickened to think where he came from if they're only charging$800 for him at a pet store. Usually they're double that.
