100% water access as puppies?

We just got our two beautiful litlle girls last night. They are so wonderful and we are thrilled to finally have them home with us.They are doing really well. It's just like having a little baby x 2. They are so playful and cuddly. They are going potty outside very well, with only a few minor piddles on the floor this far. We have crates for both of them but have decided to remove the doors on the front of them so that they will have access to their toys and water at all times. But I was wondering about the water thing. It would seem to me that if I could lift their water bowl up off the floor at a certain time every night to replace it in the morning, it would become a matter of clockwork, and I would soon learn what time is safe and could eliminate the morning piddle piles. But if they have access to water all night, how will the peeing at night ever really stop? Yet, it was explained to me that puppies will dehydrate very quickly and I need to allow them water all throughout the night. Is this true?

I was taking the water away about 1 hour before bed unless they had a play then I gave some water. Morning put out for pee then water and food and 20 minuted later out again and mine usually do both then. Once we got the hang of that I have the water down and now have no real problems putting them out the second time seems to be the trick for us.
I would never leave water all night with a puppy. It would have to be extremely hot, or the puppy being ill or something for me to do that.

Pick up the water at a convenient time late in the evening, do last potties an hour or so after the water is removed. Outside 1st thing in the morning - even before I hit the bathroom myself! Of course, being they are still babies, you will have been out a time or 2 in the night also.

Outside after waking, after drinking, after eating, after playing, and at least every 2 hours besides. Stay outside, watch them. Reward each one immediately after they go. Otherwise, if you just let them out, they will just play and come in, then potty in the house. 2 will be harder to train, just because they are 2, not 1.

I would also crate them seperately at night to give them some independece and time apart. Otherwise, they will become too bonded to each other and hard to do seperate activities with later on. Same thing goes for taking them places alone sometimes and doing activities with just one.
Agreed. I would take up their water an hour before last potty break and keep it up all night. Be sure to crate them individually and close the door on the crate at night. They'll let you know if they have to get up.

Also, if it were me trying to train two, I'd take them out individually for potty breaks. I had to that sometimes when mine were younger and they are not littermates. They tend to want to play instead of doing their business. Of course, they'll do that anyway, but it's worse if they have a playmate outside with them at the same time. Either that, or have your husband take one and you take one and go in different directions.

Have fun with them and post some pictures SOON!!! :D

Absolutely on all counts. One puppy at potty time at that age is a terror. Having a second one will be downright sabotage. I actually like the idea of one going one way, one going the other with the pups. That way they'll learn to sync in going out at the same time but not try to interact with each other. That'll be your biggest challenge in all training-- getting them to pay attention to you instead of each other.
Thanks. I wanted to take the water up at night, but was worried about them dehydrating...but if that isn't much of a worry... I'm glad about that.
Yeah, we have sort have been taking them out seperately anyway because we wanted to eliminate the interaction with each other for potty break time. And it's really neat because you would think with having two littermates, they would play all the time with each other, but they are seperate so far more often. We have the crate doors open. And it's so sweet because they actually want to be in there to go to sleep with their blankies, and on their own, they often lie down each in her own crate. They are so cute and cuddly and awesome...and they get tons of one on one with me and my family because we have six members plus huge extended family all living near and come over all the time. Thanks everyone
I let obe have water until 9 at night then took it away and he got it back in the morning at feeding time. To be quite honest i still kind of do that. I fill them up when i get home from work and continue until 7 or 8, then the bowls(1 outside and 2 inside) do not get filled again until the morning. Seems to have worked for me.
