Dog won't urinate anywhere accept back yard. . .

I have a 6 month old male German shepard who will not urinate anywhere other than his own back yard. When we go on car trips, he refuses to go on roadsides, parks, etc.; even though he can smell other animals' urine. One time he held his urine for 13 hours. I have even taken a dish towel and caught his stream with it to use later as a ground scent for him to use on trips. He ignores it for what it is and just wants to play with it. His holding of urine is quite upsetting because he is constantly whining on trips, but won't go and then we are concerned that he may develop kidney problems if this problem persists. What do you recommend?

I've ran into a lot of dogs that are like that including both of mine at one point. The more traveling we did, the less of a problem it became. Now it's not an issue. Yuki refused to pee at the vet office ......too many smells!!!

Just keep taking your dog out on long walks instead of letting it pee in the backyard. A dog will go when it has too.

I do worry about bladder problems too since my maltese will hold it for more than 16 hours if she wants to. <<shrugs>>
The first time we went camping my gal did not go for 2 days ... 8O

Then we went on vacation for 11 days....She went...

You might want to teach him to go on cue...Give it a name, and when he goes, say the word and give him a small treat. Do this often in your back yard, where you know he will go for sure...When he goes when you ask him to, you can take it on the road!

Good luck!!
Give it a name, I use "twinkles" and they pee on cue anywhere we are.

Potty breaks are no problems for that quick stop when we are travelling, take them out of the car, say the magic word, then back in and on our way.
I can open the door and tell Duch ... go pee... and she will go pee or poo in the yard but she does not go when we are out for a walk or on a car trip and last week I left her at the doggy care and she would not go for them either on a walk or in the groomers back yard ( the groomer took her home at night) but she did go in her house , Our report card was not good
