I'm not in a medical field, but this does not sound good to me.

Why not?

Exactly. Make sure they tell you what the signs of distress for it would be.

I am sorry to hear that his elbows were worse than anticipated. Besides all this bad news, were they able to repair them so that he heals properly and will recover fully?

:ghug:
Well, human orthopedics are my field of work, so maybe I can help a bit.

It sounds like the piece got driven into the bone. Orthopedic surgery is very physical - lots of drilling, pounding and actually is alot like doing woodworking.
If the piece went in neatly, it would be best to leave it. Trying to get it out can chip or weaken or even break his bones - not something you want to have happen. And it must be right near where they were already doing stuff to the bone, so it already is being disturbed.

It may loosen later, so make sure they explain it to you well, especially where it is. If Derby were mine, I would insist on an xray that you get to keep showing the exact location. So later on, you can show a vet the spot if you need to. It may be too small to see on the film, but have them mark it's location. Just to be safe.

I would think a discount in price would be given too. Just for the fact that it happened. Having the metal piece in there should NOT affect his recovery at all though - provided it is not right in the joint area itself.
Keep us posted.
i am calming down now and thanks dawn that is sort of what happen why they can't remove it.. i need to wirte everyting down to make sure i ask all the right questions when i see him.. keep them coming
Thanks for the explanation, Dawn. It helps to know the "whys" - keeps you sane & calmer. :D
Glad to help! :D
Poor Derby! Thank God we have so many knowledgeable people on this forum!

This is the surgery that my first OES, Quincy, had when he was 1 & 1/2 years old, but only on one elbow. He came through it well, and was putting weight on the leg hours after surgery. Quincy healed quickly, but couldn't do stairs or go out off leash for at least three weeks. I don't know how Derby is, but Quincy's pain tolerance was unbelievably high, so we had to watch him closely to make sure he didn't overdo it.

Hugs for you and Derby. :ghug:

Laurie and Oscar, the Drama Queen
thanks laurie i was worried they told me to call tomorrow he might come home but will keep him till friday if he can't stand.. how is your quincy doing did he always limp after surgery?
tammy the vet told me i did the right thing and the surgery when very well except for leaving tools in him lol well i guess i can't take him for a plane ride unless he strips down..
What an ordeal! I hope he has a very quick and painless recovery.
Sorry to hear that, I hope Derby heals up nicely real soon and yes no airports for derby now, can just hear the alarm sounding.

Hugs to both and Go derby get better and bouncy soon. :ghug:
Oh jeez... sigh. Not what any of us wanted to hear.

It sounds like, despite this glitch, you made the best decision for Derby by having this surgery done.

It's best they keep him for a few days... they can give him stronger pain medication while in the hospital than you can at home. They can keep him more comfortable until he's up on all fours again.

I'm sorry this has been so stressful for you. Please keep us posted.
:ghug:
Quincy didn't limp at all after surgery, but, then again, he only had one elbow that needed fixing. I would imagine that Derby will be pretty sore for a bit.

When Quincy had his surgery, I was told that he already had arthritic changes in the joint, so he was put on Rimadyl (anti-inflammatory)and Cosequin (glucosamine supplement) for the rest of his life, and he never limped again. Unfortunately, he passed away unexpectedly when he was only five, so I don't know how he would have been in his later years as far as the arthritis.

Please let me know if you have any more questions, and hugs to Derby.

Laurie
Wow, hope Derby has a speedy recovery.

As much as the steel fragment left is upsetting you, I think it is noble of your doctor to tell you that upfront vs. trying to figure out what is wrong down the road if something happened.
Hope Derby feels better real soon!

It's not like they left the WHOLE tool in there

Seriously, though, I'm glad that it sounds like the surgery went well and hopefully Derby will bounce back fast!
Any word on how Derby's doing today?
oh my gosh- poor derby!

I hope he has a quick recovery!
